Coach Edsall's been doin' some work too

As most of you know, I've rode along the fence of wait and see concerning the football squad moving forward. I was among the first posters to say Coach shot himself in the foot PR-wise all season long at a time when many were beating the "fire RE" drums.

Well, one point we all agreed upon was that recruiting had to pick up. We knew, and read, reports of coach actively going out to many different games/HS showcases in the area. Well, I have to admit, even though I'm a midliner, I underestimated the recruiting power of Coach Edsall.

This Bleacher Report article interviews Caleb Rowe, who said he LOVES coach Edsall. I'm happy Coach's message is sinking in with recruits after all. Frankly, the strong words from Caleb surprised me a bit. I'm very pleased to read the glowing words. I just want to give credit where it's due. Many of us moved on a while ago to begin looking forward to next season. That being said, I gotta go - there's a bball game to be won in a few minutes!

Don't you know RE went 2-10 so he could be ACC COY next year?

And it was awfully hard to lose the NC St. game, but he got ’er done.

Hey, I got crucified for saying this kind of stuff

I created a fan post saying Edsall was a genius for setting the bar so low this year. ;-)

by Terperator on Jan 11, 2012 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

too funny ...

i too got slammed for pointing out the obvious by a handful of randy admirers!

best wishes for 2012! hopefully, it’s a good one for umd football.

by mi6 on Jan 11, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

Caleb

Rowe’s runner up was Gardner-Webb and according to Scout, he is the 70th rated QB. So while I’m also wait and see with Edsall, this really isn’t thread worthy.

by EASTVILLAGETERP on Jan 11, 2012 6:42 PM EST reply actions

ummm

i believe Rowe has been blowing up and people were saying he could end up a 4 star player. Wasnt he also A state player of the year? He will NOT be the 70th ranked QB soon. Hes a player!

by rquidas on Jan 11, 2012 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Just out of curiosity...?

Does anyone know what our last couple QB that we played/recruited were ranked? Has MD ever had a QB higher then 3 stars?

by vaterp9 on Jan 12, 2012 8:29 AM EST up reply actions

Tyler...?

We had a 4 star recruit in 2010 that transferred out after he redshirted his freshman season. DOB emerged during his RS season and he realized he wouldn’t see the field. He transferred to Elon.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 12, 2012 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

How about...

.. the guys that played back in the “great” friedgen era? Like McBrien, Hollenbach, etc…?

IIRC, steffy was really highly recruit as well – but he never panned out to well… wasn’t he a 4 star though?

by vaterp9 on Jan 12, 2012 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

yup

Kid didnt even play for Elon this year though. I was telling everyone we were gonna be sick with this 4 star coming in and he didnt even play.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Jan 12, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

with a stellar freshman season

completing 1 of 8 passes for 7 yards and an INT

I don't know if they used...

the star system back then, but Boomer Esiasan was very highly regarded.

I don't know if I'd say "strong" or "glowing" words.

He just said “I love Coach Edsall,” right?

If the point of this post is to give credit where it’s due and acknowledge Edsall for putting in work, I’m more impressed when I see a kid saying “I really believe in what he’s trying to accomplish at Maryland.”

To me, this quote was kind of generic. Like “I love spaghetti.”

by RSVRTERP on Jan 11, 2012 7:04 PM EST reply actions

echo your sentiments!

i would like to see a more transperancy. didn’t randy and kevin state at the conclusion of last season that they would do a top down evaluation of the program (or something to that effect).

would love to see what their assessments were.

by mi6 on Jan 11, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

I want 10 4* to say the same generic thing

and come to MD and start #Winning. lol

Of course...

this kind of screws any idea that we give all future credit for success to Locksley.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Jan 11, 2012 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Not Really

I’ve said it alot that Edsall is a very hard working recruiter. IMO, he has what Fridge lacked/lost, and thats the ability to close. He’s the type of guy that after the assistants have built a strong relation ship and smooth talked a recruit, he’ll swoop in and impress the parents and sell his vision to the recruit. What he didn’t have was the relationship builder type of guy like Locks except Guttuso. Hull, Brattan, Powell, and Guttuso are good relationship guys but they are not as strong as Locks in the DMV area which we need to compete. Most of our assistants connects are down south and Guttuso’s is PA. So while Edsall did keep the area guys interested, he couldn’t close the deal without a wingman to compliment his pitch.

Randy has done what any good recruiter has to do to have a shot at landing a recruit. Ask any scout or assistant coach and they will tell you the first thing you must do is get a kid on campus. He has done that at a pretty good rate but couldn’t seal the seal without Locks, which is the case with Mr. Reid. It also doen;t hurt that his mother works at UMD HAHA, GO TERPS!

Who's our QB for 2012?

Any word on whether of not Danny is coming back?

Assuming that he transfers, hope he doesn’t … who do think will be our starting QB.

I like CJ. But, he isn’t a passer. And, unfortunately, once defenses figured him out … he was quite ineffective.

by mi6 on Jan 11, 2012 10:40 PM EST reply actions

I would imagine...

that DOB is staying with the new OC that is more of a pro scheme guy. I would assume CJ is more likely to transfer at this point…. now that he got a real taste of playtime, i dont think he’ll want to go back to a backup. Especially with the QB recruits we have coming in…

by vaterp9 on Jan 12, 2012 8:32 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

what exactly

do you like about that idea? hed get annihilated

by PAB522 on Jan 12, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

agreed!

CJ is not built to take punishment. Not sure if this is even a remote possibility … But, perhaps we could use CJ as a deep threat WR.

If he can kick, I am sure he could easily supplant Nick Ferraro. Are we looking at recruiting a kicker / punter?

by mi6 on Jan 13, 2012 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

I think you might be right!

Or, perhaps we install some pistol formations to leverage what CJ legs have to offer.

by mi6 on Jan 13, 2012 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

they won't do it

They’ll stick with one quarterback, it never works using two throughout the game, it didn’t work this year either.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 13, 2012 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

Still work to do

We’re still 40 something last I checked in the class rankings. If UVA can be in the 20’s, so can we. I consider anything outside of the top 30 unacceptable in my book. I know that’s tough but I have high expectations. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be up there with all the talent around us. The only thing making it a little more difficult is the admissions standards.

by Jimmy Bare on Jan 12, 2012 9:54 AM EST reply actions

The latest class rankings

most likely do not include the additions of wes brown and albert reid. Two borderline 4 star players should push us higher in the rankings. I agree though that we need to recruit better if we want chances to win.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 12, 2012 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

247 is the only site I know of whose rankings auto-update, and they have us at 39 w/ Reid and Brown

http://247sports.com/Team/Ranking

But they’re really nonchalant on Reid and I in fact disagree w/ their assessment as far as star rankings go. The impact will be much bigger on Scout and ESPN.

by Ben Broman on Jan 12, 2012 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

scout has us

behind VA in the ACC. In 6th. VA is top 25 nationally. I would think we are around 31.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Jan 12, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Where we end up in the final rankings depends greatly upon if we get one or more of goldman, diggs, and darby or whoever else we get to round out the class

by SteelTerp42 on Jan 12, 2012 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Reid

should push us higher in rankings…

by valleyterp on Jan 12, 2012 11:16 AM EST reply actions

Awesome!

Glad we recruited two good running backs – Wes and Reid.

By chance, did we recruit a punter / kicker? Nick Ferraro stunk last year.

by mi6 on Jan 12, 2012 7:52 PM EST reply actions

Um...

Kenneth Goins?

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Jan 12, 2012 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Goins or Reid (I'm guessing Goins)

Are not going to play RB. It wouldn’t make sense unless one of them redshirts this year so they aren’t all in the same class. You don’t want to stack the same position with 3-4 players all in one class, otherwise you are decimated in 4-5 years when they all leave at once.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 13, 2012 9:00 AM EST up reply actions

Edsall

I assume any new kid who is hoping to compete for playing time is going to LOVE his new coach….after Edsall moves him to left tackle, we should ask him again

Dude seriously ...

would 2-10 Edsall sound better?

lighten up. it’s only a post. no need to get worked up over it. i am cognizant that it perhaps isn’t as humorous as i would like it to be. but, it’s a play on words.

folks constantly nagging to an opposing view, or attempting to verbal bash you into conforming to their way of thinking or views is annoying as hell as well!

peace out.

Um....

I’m not “verbally bashing you into conforming to my way of thinking”. I simply said you should stop with the “Eggshell” comment. All you have to do is not say his name at all. A simple RE would work. We would all know who you were talking about and I’m sick of hearing all of this Edsall bashing. No, I’m not a fan of the man but bashing him has gotten so old and worn out, its annoying. It doesnt need to be on every single post. I know this particular post is about him, but bashing him was played out a month ago.

by terpsallday on Jan 13, 2012 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

I hear ya!

It’s all just goofing off, but enough with the bashing already. We have momentum going and some things need to be suppressed for a bit. November was my month to let off steam and maybe a little of Dec, LOL. I don’t think the Eggshell is bashing…. just old. But to each his own.

by TwerpsNoMore on Jan 13, 2012 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

In my opinion, the "bashing" is okay

it is the mindless and childish potshots that should stop. By all means bring a NEW and reasoned critique. But saying the same stuff is pointless and saying childish insults are even more pointless.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 13, 2012 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

Was the snide remark directed at you?

Please don’t lecture me about civility.

There are folks on this forum, and they are a handful who take it upon themselves to be the so called voice of reason. In reality they are not!

Do make note that I have not instigated or provoced anyone on this forum by launching into them.

You don’t like my calling Edsall, or as Kevin called him Elerson, as Eggshell. So, what?! Did I call you name or make snide remarks about you or your posts? NO!

There in lies the difference.

by mi6 on Jan 13, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

its funny because you contradict yourself everytime someone has a different opinion

you preach that everyone has there own opinion, but whenever someone counters your opinion you get so worked up about it in your reply back. The way you post makes you look so un-civil as to contradict your own calling for everyone else to be civil and to accept other opinions.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 13, 2012 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

My above post wasn't a lecture.

It was an exact copy/paste of one of your own posts from another thread. It seemed to apply well here given your snide remark and whatnot.

What we Post

Can, and WILL, be Held against Us – all beware! lol Good job pulling it up – we should allow all opinions imo – as long as their thought out, have some substance, and aren’t character assassinations. I think mi6 pulled back a bit at times and doesn’t attack the board. The names for KA and RE? Well, it’s ok, but I think you’re going to drop them after next season. I’m get a warm fuzzy about it. I cannot believe my eyes, but some Ol’ Mo’ is building up! Finally!

i do admit, that i have been pointed in my critism of both kevin and randy. i did offer up my rationale — and, while some may prefer brown nosing, that isn’t my calling.

i have attempted to make peace and move on. however, i do take exception to folks just piling on.

Goldman eliminates MD

can’t create a fanpost at work…but Eddie Goldman is down to Miami, FSU, Alabama and Auburn. Won’t take his last official visit and may announce sooner than national signing day.

I hope so hard he chooses an Alabama school, I don’t want to play him. Especially if he chooses FSU, which would probably keep Mario Edwards committed there :(
