Last of a busy weekend

and it ended as it began with the Terps women's soccer team dropping a tough 1-0 decision to a Florida based ACC rival. As a fan, it gets tiring writing about so many losses in such a short period but here goes:

Nearly 1,800 fans showed up at Ludwig to watch the Terps take on the #1 ranked Seminoles who were coming off a loss to BC on Thursday. The first half was a close defensive struggle with FSU managing the only shot on goal in the 6th minute. Shannon Zickler getting the start in goal on senior day easily made the save. Probably due to the absence of leading scorer Haley Brock as a result of a questionable red card from Thursday's game, the Terps looked a bit out of sorts in terms of mounting an attack. In truth, neither team was able to muster any dangerous scoring opportunities and the half ended deadlocked at 0-0.

FSU used its superior speed to pressure the Terps in the second half with the defense blocking an FSU shot in the 49th minute. The Terps mounted a quick counter attack earning a corner from Freshman Shannon Collins just about a minute later. Riley Barger's shot was saved easily by State's keeper. FSU earned a corner of its own in the 52nd minute and knocked a shot high after the exchange in the box. After a nice pass intercept and long run up the field by freshman defender Erika Nelson, senior Becky Kaplan got off a low shot from a tough angle in the 59th minute that was again an easy save for the FSU goalie. The Terps used some stellar defense to survive a Seminole raid on their box in the 67th and 68th minutes blocking 2 close attempts before seeing a third batted high.

Late in the game there appeared to be (here I go again) a questionable non call on a breakaway by freshman forward Gabby Galanti who appeared to most in the stands to have been fouled in the box on an attempted tackle from behind. No foul was called (for the game, MD was called for 11 fouls to FSU's 3) and even more astonishingly FSU got a goal kick (thanks turtlepower for the correction). FSU countered quickly and was able to score a clean goal on a perfect cross from goalie Rachelle Beanlands left against a stunned Terps squad. The RS Freshman was unable to recover in time and FSU had the lead . (for those of you who were among the 1,800 I will refrain from any discussion of the no call on the inadvertent elbow that essentially cold cocked Aubrey Baker because what's the point.) The Terps finish the regular season at 11-5-2. The Terps next game should be hosting BC in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Check www.umterps.com for details.

Upcoming this week, field hockey welcomes American University to College Park on Monday night at 7:00 before taking on Rutgers in another home game Friday night also at 7:00 Friday will also be senior night. I hope a number of you will turn out to see off an 8 member senior class that has 2 NCAA titles and 1 NCAA runner-up on it's resume. Volleyball will try to get back on the winning track with a visit to AU on Tuesday and home games against GT and Clemson on the 26th and 28th. The #1 ranked men's soccer will take on Lehigh in a non-conference match up at Ludwig on Tuesday night before closing out it home schedule Saturday against Clemson where the Terps will be sending off an accomplished 3 man senior class.
