Recruiting Updates
Happy Friday everyone!
First IMS is reporting that the Terps are pursuing Torian Graham:
@insidemdsports
InsideMDSports
Latest on the #Terps and top-50 SG Torian Graham: bit.ly/qZm2mr (VIP)
And its safe to assume Turgeon is the one making the visit (most likely with Hill):
@insidemdsports
InsideMDSports
#Terps coach MarkTurgeon hits the recruiting trail. bit.ly/pO3iUo (VIP)
The staff has cooled on Henderson is moving to make a push on Graham. Should be interesting to see how this ends up considering there's no news yet on Sander's recruitment.
Second the staff is at Brewster Academy to McGary today:
JoshLee_BAHoops Josh Lee
#Florida, #Michigan, #Maryland, #duke, #Xavier, #Kansas, #Rutgers, #Dartmouth on campus today
Also the staff is at Vermont Academy to see a trio:
TheRecruitScoop Alex Kline
Florida, Maryland, Rutgers & Gonzaga saw 2013 Vermont Academy trio Jamel Artis, Dominic Woodson & Daquein McNeil this morning.
Now moving on to other teams and recruits that will have an impact on the Terps’ recruiting.
First, Kentucky got a commit from 5-star SG Archie Goodwin. Now this effectively crosses Graham off their list, but even stranger Calipari recently visited another 5 star SG: Gary Harris.
Per ESPN:
Coach John Calipari conducted in an-home visit with the nation's top rated shooting guard on Monday night, adding to a lengthy list of programs vying for his services. According to Eric Bossi of Rivals, however, the three Big Ten schools -- Michigan State, Indiana and Purdue -- should still have the inside track at this point.
I don’t know what to make of this but it seems that Kentucky has virtually no interest for Graham at the moment.
Second, Perry Ellis. Its reported that Kansas is in the lead for him.
@EvanDanielscout
Evan Daniels
Perry Ellis is an important one for Kansas. They need this kid. Local guy. Been involved since he was a freshman. No. 33 overall in 2012.
Jeff Borzello is also reporting that Kansas is the favorite:
Throughout his recruitment, Kansas has been considered by some to be the favorite, but the family has not shown their cards heading into the final day.
Link.
What does this mean for the Terps. In my opinion not that much. First, I don’t consider Kentucky to be a player in the McGary recruiting saga. Second, Ellis is an oversized 3 who is fit to play the 4 in college. McGary is a true PF.
Thrid, Nate Britt’s recruitment will have implications based on what happens with Bronson Koenig.
Per ESPN:
According to Eric Bossi of Rivals.com, "it seems to be more of a matter of when, and not if, Wisconsin lands 2013 combo guard Bronson Koenig."
This is just a further indication that the chances are very good that Koenig ultimately chooses to stay home and play for the Badgers.
Wisconsin and UNC are looking at Koenig for their #1 PG in 2013. Nate is the back up for UNC as well as for us since MD is pursuing the Harrison twins. It will be interesting to see that if UNC misses on Koenig then they might push hard for Britt who might not want to wait around for the twin situation to resolve itself.
Fourth, UNC might be out of the running for Mitch McGary soon because of space limitations.
Per ESPN:
We mentioned recently that Joel James (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Dwyer) may be a possible target for North Carolina, but up until recently the big man hadn't received an offer from the Tar Heels. That is no longer a problem, however, as UNC extended an offer to 6-foot-10, 260-pound center and has set up an official visit for Oct. 8.
James told InsideCarolina.com that earlier this summer he decided UNC and Florida State were his favorite schools, so the Seminoles look to be the team to beat here, even with Florida and NC State showing interest as well. It's also worth noting that FSU reportedly gained a commitment on Tuesday from English big man Robert Gilchrist, which could hurt its chances with James.
Aside from James, UNC is also still very much after Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy) and is also now recruiting one of the top ranked centers in the JUCO ranks, Waverly Austin.
Anyone of these guys pull the trigger will virtual end the chances of McGary ending up at UNC. Meaning we have less teams to worry about. Yay!

I love it. Show them how its done. I too cant stand the short one line posts. Especially the ones where someone posted the same crap 2-3 days earlier or the ones where someone is repeating something someone posted the same day.
Props for this post and consolidating all the info. I know this one took some time to compile.
I had basically ruled Graham out in my mind, but maybe he is still in play.
Please dont bring up Raylew52 like he knows what the hell he is talking about. That kid throws darts at a dartboard blindly hoping one will stick so he could say I told you I would hit the board. "L7 WEENIE"

more importantly Charlotte, no comment on
possible cooling on our highlight reel machine? The inside skinny on that one day would be neat to read, gaining insight on the staff’s evaluation process. Prolly never happen, but fun to think about.

Yea not sure what is up with Henderson
I would love Graham though. I really dont want Sanders. Oh and I think we can forget Macon. That guy is all over WVU. He retweets WVU like crazy.

so did Grant
Grant retweeted MD like crazy then ruled them out. Not exactly the same since grant dropped us then added us again…but still, it shows retweets aren’t what we think they are.
I’m all for Torian Graham though, that’d be awesome. But what would that do with the twins? Andrew is a PG, but Aaron plays the 2 like Graham does, so would it hurt our chances if a high profile 2 signs this year?
Macon's grades...
are a major issue from what I understand.
* Maryland basketball has been a sleeping Giant. The Giant is waking up.

They are
I think thats why he transferred to Huntington Prep. To fix that MAJOR problem
And it was WVU...
that wanted him to improve his grades. What does that tell you?

How can you not maintain a 2.0 GPA? I had a 2.6 and I skipped a class or 2 everyday. Its kinda sad really
lookin back yeah ur probably right lol
I’ll admit I didn’t really try in school. Nothin I can do about it now.
Macon
Retweets me all the time. I thought we were getting the #BringHomeTheMacon or something else trending, but thus far I have been the only one.
Does Torian have twitter? Time to barrage this guy with UMD tweets, lol.

But salesman Cal will push the Wall/Bledsoe situation until the day he stops recruiting. We can show the Twins and Nick to do that here! Let’s go!

I think...
The combination of goodwin commiting and Ryan Harrow being eligible to play next year (5 star transfer) may help us out with the twins because they’ll see more of a chance to play here rather than Kentucky. I stated my thoughts above on Graham coming to MD though and that possibly hurting us there.
Hometown Connection
I think the hometown connection with the twins is often overlooked or understated. Their family is from Baltimore. Sure they have roots in Houston now, but I think the MD connection is strong and may be a deciding factor, especially if the staff is selling them the whole have Maryland Pride, play for your hometown deal.
Now I don’t want to jinx anything, but I honestly feel that this is for Maryland to lose basically. Not that the competition isn’t stiff, it is. But they have certain advantages and connections that other programs do not have. I think if we stay on them, emphasis those connections, tell them we are building a team around THEM, they are ours to lose…

Nice work
Serious effort put into this one. For some reason it seems the more high profile players go to Kentucky even more want to follow. Though it would seem that if players want to play right away its starting to become a log jam at several positions. I say the Harrison twins would have to reconsider Kentucky if they land a couple more big timers, I would say MD is looking great for those two.

We're not late
Torian decommitted from NC State and MD jumped right in. Also, Hill has known him and his family for years. The staff should be in a good position to make a move on him.

When Graham decommitted from NC St.
He sounded like he wanted to stretch out the recruiting process and take his time. I wouldn’t expect any quick decisions from Torian for a while.
Also, wait for UK to be totally disappointed with Ryan Harrow in 2012. He’s one of the skinniest kids I’ve ever seen play college BBall. He’s a legend in his own mind.
Big Bird – very informative post.

Torian Graham
Would be a huge pick up and definitely move us inside the top 10 class (we are sitting at 10).
One thing, weren’t grades an issue with Graham? I saw this on another post. I really hope that is not the case because I love this kid. Athletic and talented.
*All Terp Everything*
Yea
Also his mom just died unfortunately. But he’s settled now at ADS so he should be able to get things straightened out.

WOW
That is truly unfortunate. Damn! Condolences to him and his family.
This would really strengthen our connection to DC AAU right out of the gate too. Hopefully just creating a pipeline. Obviously not every DC or Bmore kid is going to want to stay in this area, but we SHOULD be pulling the majority of them.
*All Terp Everything*
pulling some is fine
only so many roster spots, only so much top talent in any location. We need to be coast to coast, int’l, whatever it takes to get players in here who style is…winning…the right way :)

I agree...
The only reason I was upset at Gary for not locking down the area, was because the players who escaped, were better than the players Gary was bringing in. If Turge finds better players elsewhere, then fine.

I meant not letting the Durants, Lawsons, Nolan Smiths, Melos out of this area.
I agree, as long as Turge & Co. Bring in quality recruits, I do not care where they are from, but it is also important to maintain relationships with local AAU programs so when they do have those program changing players come through the system we can jump on them.

yep - we've all been chatting about it
Then we see the skills, and somehow we forget the top 100 ground can get shaky and risky. If these guys had better assistance, or listened better to the help they receive, they’d be a lot better off – than grinding hard at the end. I still say all the practices, HS games combined with AAU, etc., really take a toll on the guys who don’t take it seriously, or don’t have the skill set in the classroom to get it done. There’s no one good answer – unfortunately, life serves us the grey areas constantly.

Last time I checked
Peeps on the streets will tell you anything you want to hear. McGary will not commit right after his visit, per my peeps on the streets aka common sense. McGary will wait and digest his visits. If I recall correctly he has not visited Florida “officially” yet. I think it will come down to Michigan, Florida, Dook and Maryland. Kentucky will get too many high name recruits that McGary wont want to compete with and rightfully so, UNC will play them out of the competition also with landing too many big guys. Not to mention you cant really like Dook and UNC, its one or the other.

I think EGTerps13 has it just about right
but to expound on that, the point has been made that Duke want MM to play the 5. Michigan also has no one on its current roster listed as a center, and per Scout, no one on its 2012 prospect list is a 5. UNC has 5* PF committed in 2011 and 2013. Florida has several players on its roster listed as F/C. Of the schools you listed, UMD has the only true 5. Based on that, I think the Terps have an excellent case to be made from the standpoint of PT at his natural position. You can bet Turge is well aware of that.

Didn't See It Posted Anywhere....
But Twymond Howard committed to UTEP.
Cal is a sleeze
“Kentucky’s Calipari, Payne & Antigua saw Jabari Parker today. Coach Cal said Jabari is their #1 recruit for 2013”
Sound awfully familiar. I guess the Harrisons are the 2nd #1 priorities.
maybe he knows the twins are going elsewhere
i wonder where that could be…
IMO
Cal’s lost some of that momentum he had in recruiting in 2009 after bringing in the absurd class of Wall, Bledsoe & company. I hope we can finish off strong in 2012 and get the twins in 2013. That has the making of a national championship team.
