Earlier this week, Patrick Stevens, in his D1scourse blog (Washington Times), compiled a list of the jersey/pants combinations that Maryland football has used since 2005. I wondered what their record was for each uniform combination, and fortunately, TerrapinStats.com has easy-to-use lists of season-by-season results. It doesn't look good for everyone who's excited about all-black uniforms.
Jersey/Pants W-L %Black/White 4-1 .800
Red/White 16-6 .727
Red/Red 4-3 .571
White/Black 3-3 .500
Black/Red 1-1 .500
White/Red 5-7 .416
White/White 6-11 .352
Black/Black 0-4 .000
What does this all mean? Not much, unless you're superstitious. Just fun statistics to kill time until the Miami game.
Combinations with White jerseys do worse, since we tend to wear those on the road. We tend to wear Red/White for all the non-conference home games against weaker opponents, so we ran up a lot of wins in that combination. We only wear Black/Black for big games against top opponents like WV, VT, and FSU, hence the poor record for that combination. I'm not sure why Black/White does so well; we have worn those exclusively for ACC home games, but we haven't used that combination since 2008.
