Maryland Releases 2011-12 Basketball Schedule, Will Play Temple, Illinois, Notre Dame

Dude wearing orange: real cool, bro.

So, Maryland released their 2011-12 basketball schedule earlier today. Not that anyone was ever going to care based on the other developments of the day, but I suppose we'll distract ourselves for a few moments to give it a glance.

It is without surprise. I don't think we ever heard anything concrete about the Terrapins playing Temple at the Palestra (as payback for their game in the BB&T Classic) but the rumors were definitely there. (Interestingly, Maryland could end up playing them twice this year, because they're also in the field for their preseason tournament.) Past that, we definitely knew about the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Notre Dame in BB&T, and Illinois in the ACC-B10 Challenge quite some time ago. As far as OOC goes, there are no other surprises. Every OOC game minus the PR Tip-Off and Temple is at home, though the competition - UNC-Wilmington, Mount St. Mary's, Radford - isn't likely to inspire. It is cool, admittedly, that they play Isiah Thomas' FIU team.

The other revelation, I suppose, was the order of ACC games. Things start off with a road game against N.C. State, which is pretty awesome given the Terps-Yow "Gary Williams sabotage" storyline. Sadly, no Gary, but in the words of the Immortal Debbie, "Y'know, whatever." Still cool, and a win over the Wuffies to start off Turgeon's ACC career would be sublime. As usual, things end with a game against UVA.

Initial thoughts: probably around 14 or 15 wins or so. Ouch. Just wait until next year, I suppose.

I also should've called out tye-dye guy

But I didn’t see him until now. He’s probably worse, given that he’s not even holding a fake newspaper.

schedule seems really weak.

maybe this team has a chance if they can pull off the necessary wins

I don't think it's that week

Consider last year we played 10 “gimme” games against UNC-Wilmington, Mount St. Mary’s, Radford types. This year by my count we only have 8.

We get three games in the PR Tip-off all which will be against quality competition. I think if we can somehow get 2/3 in PR, split the Illinous/ND games, and not slip up against any cupcakes we actually set ourselves up quite nicely for the rest of the season. 10 wins before ACC play and I’m a happy man.

I want some of your Kool Aid

Cannot see more than 13-14 W’s. Only play Wake and NC St. once. Unfortunately Puke and Tar Heels twice, all will be blowouts. But that’s OK. Revenge will come in 2012.

Palestra

I’m pumped we are playing there…will definitely be making a trip up there for that. Never been to one of the cathedrals of hoops

I think Maryland should do an exhibition game

at Rucker Park

I call it like I see it, some fan bases can't handle that.

Terps played Penn there in either '01 or '02

Awesome place for games. A true Big 5 game though will beat MD-Temple in terms of the environment

2000

We beat Penn there in 2000. I drove up for the game. The Palestra is a great, historic arena to watch a game in if you’ve never been there (or haven’t been since 2000), but I remember narrow, low-ceiling, crowded concourses with uncomfortable bleacher seats. Not as modern as Cole Field House. Not sure I’d want to watch more than 1-2 games a season there for the historic feel.

Streaming

I’m trying to remember, and hopefully someone knows better, but games on any of the ESPN networks are available on ESPN3, selected games on the ACC Network are made available live on their site, whereas MASN and RSN games are not publicly streamed.

Shocked

Honestly shocked. I heard from very reliable sources that he was going to come to UMD or at least he wanted to come to UMD. Now that he is going to GW makes me believe UMD might think they are getting better players in 2012’s class and want the scholarship or they just didn’t buy into taking him. Very shocking

Yeah

If he’s going to GW, that should mean that if we wanted him at UMD, we could have gotten him.

Yep.. How often do you see lateral transfers in b-ball or football?

Guys either out-perform a small school and move-up, or the opposite. Its not often you see a lateral move

by Asnis71 on Aug 25, 2011 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily.

Villanova appears to have still wanted him and he left too. He easily could have been interested in UMD, but then concerned that exactly the same thing would happen to him here in 2012/13, i.e., get benched behind some really talented youngsters.

Maybe he just really fit in with the GW coaching staff and or thought that he was more likely to have a chance at being a star at GW than MD. Many different factors play in for different players. As many keep saying on here, its pretty hard to break down decisions made by these guys from twitter posts, rumors and 2nd or 3rd hand information.

Armwood about equal to Shane Clark

Middle of the road player. We can get better. Trust Turge.
