Some UVA fans think Maryland is dirty
I got bored and decided to snoop around other ACC blogs and I found this. The quote is an answer from a question about which basketball programs would get hit with sanctions for recieving improper benefits in light of the Miami situation.
I know some folks get a kick out of this so here are a few I'd say that aren't that surprising - Baylor, Mississippi State, Auburn, Kentucky, Uconn, Syracuse, Gonzaga, USC, Oklahoma State and Maryland is on the fast track now as well.
Those are some, there are many many more. These are the programs that don't do things right and I don't like personally because of it. Maryland is the only one on this list that makes me sad because I loved Gary Williams and the way he ran his program
I, for one, think Turge is a great guy and wouldn't allow it. I think he would kick someone off the team before he would let something like improper benefits slide.
Thoughts?

This was my firsta attempt at a fan post
Not very good but I think you get what I was saying lol
Did he ever say
why we were going to get in trouble? and if GW never let it happen, no way something terribly wrong happened in the limited time with turge anyways.

Talent
they obviously think we are getting some talent in the years to come.. There are ways to get talent in bball without breaking the rules and still come out of nowhere… ie Baylor. But Maryland is clearly not coming out of nowhere. We were jealous of other teams getting all the recruits… it appears other people are jealous of us now.. and we havent even gotten anyone yet. Seems like people think we are on the fast track to some top recruits.. nothing wrong with that.
Uhhh I wouldn't equate Maryland with Baylor...
At least if you like Maryland

id wouldnt be shocked
if we were committing some violations. you don’t turn around recruiting the way we have (hopefully, we’re yet to see the results) without making nice with some people. sucks, and i dont want to think its true but it wouldnt surprise me if something comes out down the road
Huh?
by turning around recruiting you mean actually being a presence at AAU tournaments and pursuing high level talent? You wouldn’t be surprised if we were breaking the rules? I think everybody forgets we had very good recruiting class post championship. We just never were able to take advantage.

Jealousy is interesting
It’s easy to like Gary when you’re not scared he’s gonna be a huge-time player in recruiting…
I think a lot of people are as surprised as we are to see Maryland’s name in McGary’s top 5, Nate Britt’s list, etc. That can lead to some assumptions. After Gary, everyone will compare Turgeon’s recruiting to his… For better or worse.
I see why..
I see why one might think that if you’re outside looking in. The hire of Dalonte Hill and the sudden interest in AAU players (which some view as controversial in its own right).
I don’t see how Turge could possibly have done anything wrong yet and Gary’s still on staff. He cleaned this program up and took it from shambles to NCAA Champs. I don’t see him letting anything shady happen. He wouldn’t let them tarnish his Alma Mater’s name.
I’m not worried at all about MD making any recruiting mistakes. The current players that are interested are seeing playing time and a fresh start here at Maryland. Plain and simple.
Interesting that UVA Fan didn’t mention DUKE seeing as how Coach Ratty-K just got his wrists slapped.
PS. Good first post man. Welcome!
Hill is the reason people are skeptical
And Bino as well. Both are AAU guys to the core, and I can see where people think that that could lead to improper benefits.
But it’s a bit of a leap to suggest it, truthfully. Turge hasn’t gotten hit with anything anywhere he’s been that I know of, and Maryland is still under significantly more stringent watch than most other programs. People who aren’t in our shoes don’t understand the type of shit the entire program would catch if we hit another sanction. I’m sure that’s been perfectly clear to Turgeon.

if you thought Maryland was dirty
then you haven’t been to Towson State.

just my 2 cents
but i feel like these large investigations relating to benefits are much more likely in football where the players have to wait 3 years to see pro money in comparison to basketball where its only one… couple that with the fact of pro basketball in europe (hawl/brandon jennings) i would say theres not as much temptation to take benefits as there is in football…
i feel like most not all of the shadiness in basketball i feel like comes down to hiring a member of recruits entourage, adjusting grades/academic standards, and general handouts to aau people not so much the recruits themselves.
i would be surprised to ever see this in basketball given the state and history of the program when gary took over it and the fact that that gary isnt far removed from it yet (still with the atletic department in some capacity)
Towson State??? HeyHey now.
If you don’t know the correct name of the University …. SHUT YOU’RE MOUTH !!!! We work well together and bashing in State Schools, is not appropriate.
I'm assuming you went to Towson?
I was tipped off by a combination of: 1) being defensive about the “Towson State” insult; and 2) not knowing the proper usage of “your.”
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Towson was pretty fun to visit when I was in school, always left with a terrible hangover, haha.
Oh my!
It WAS rather late in the evening…. FOR ME anyway. You got me though. Yes I did have the privilege to attend Towson State in the seventies. No one enjoys having their Alma Mater stepped on. You’re age (HaHa) must be close to mine, so let’s beat up on the Whipper Snappers, OKAY?

I mean
There’s absolutely nothing concrete to base this off of. Hiring Dalonte Hill I guess raises some eyebrows, but the only thing he’s guilty of is bringing Beasley and other Assault guys with him. No improper benefits, no exchanging of money, just a ridiculously strong pipeline. No one else on the staff has been connected with anything remotely close to a violation, including the head man.
Let em’ hate…
