Maryland Minute 8.11.11 - SI: Terrell Stoglin poised for breakout season

Indeed.

SI: Terrell Stoglin poised for breakout year
SI's Luke Winn has developed a formula of sorts for identifying breakout sophomores. It nailed Jordan Hamilton, Reggie Johnson, and Maalik Wayns last year, and this year Winn calls Stoglin the #1 freshman poised for a big sophomore year.

To which I reply: duh. Stogs took over the game at times last season despite being on the floor with Jordan Williams, Dino Gregory, and Cliff Tucker. With those three gone, I have no doubt he'll turn his chucker-ish tendencies up to 11, which will result in some groans but a lot of points.

Maryland Coach Randy Edsall: Quarterback Danny O’Brien is ‘a rare individual’
A lot of strong words from Edsall about DOB, none of them particularly surprising.

Another "Danny O'Brien is awesome" piece
This time from SI. And I think we can all agree that he is. Also focuses on Edsall quite a bit.

Star-divide

Boost Mobile Elite 24 roster announced
Of note: Nate Britt, Aquille Carr, Robert Carter, the Harrisons, Amile Jefferson, and Mitch McGary. It's on ESPNU on August 27 at 7. And while I know McGary and the Harrisons should excite me, I really want to see Carr in action.

Torian Graham hearing from schools, Maryland included
Has heard from the Terps in addition to Kentucky, Baylor, FSU, and Clemson, plus Texas, which has already offered. Can probably write off FSU and Clemson, which means early competition - still with plenty of time to change - is Texas, Baylor, and Kentucky.

Terps Have To Replace Stars In Hunt For Second Straight ACC Title - Terrapin Station
A preview of the 4th-ranked men's soccer team from our friends at Terrapin State. Lots and lots to replace. Can't wait to see Alex Shinsky in action, but I'm a tad worried about the youth and inexperience at keeper.

Will Yeatman picks up 2 catches for 14 yards in NFL (preseason) debut
Also, Josh Portis went 5/9 with a TD in his action with the Seahawks. Three more decent performances and he might have himself a spot on the squad.

So, Texas A&M might be headed for the SEC
More on this forthcoming.

watching the Patriots telecast last night

and after Yeatman made the couple of catches one of the commentators says “thats Will Yeatman out of Maryland” and then Scott Zolak (former Terp and now Patriots sideline reporter) screams “Oh ya, fear the turtle!” Dont hear that too often up here.

I'd want Stogs taking more shots than other guards

at this point in time.

Once Stogs began his uptick in minutes and shots, he actually performed at a higher level statistically.

From the BC game (2/12/11) onwards, Stogs averaged 27.7 minutes/gm, shot 53/104 (50.6 FG%, ~12 Shots/gm, and 4.8 Ast/gm.) Stogs shot 46% for the season, which means his early pct. was much lower and lifted higher by his finish.

Not to club Pe’ or Sean, but they were at 40 and 41% FG% for the year. Looking at Pe’ (as a fellow frosh), he played 19 Min/gm (BC onward), and shot 18/41 (44%, and 3.1 Ast/gm).

In conclusion, both Pe’ and Stogs picked up their FG% and Ast/gm (as one would expect). I like that Stogs actually dished the ball more as he ramped up scoring.
If there’s anyone we want shooting more, it’s the player with a clearly higher FG%. As long as it’s done within the structure of the team offense. It seems it was last year, and with another former PG coaching our guards, it will happen this season.

Stogs

Got more assists from the BC game onward, because he was a scoring machine, and the defenses had to collapse on him so he wouldn’t score, so all Stogs had to do was dish to the wing or under the basket for an easy assist. All great PG’s(well minus Rondo) are able to do that.

All great PGs are able to do it

that is the most impt point you make. But it is not easy or every PG would be doing it. Out of the top 7 NC2A leading scorers last season, only 3 could manage 4+ assists per game. The other 4 were 2.5 ast/gm or less.

What do you mean "worried about the youth and inexperience at keeper."

Will Swam is going to start the year.. He RS a year so he could be GK & make the transition smooth to a freshman. We’ll be ok.

a good year...

but not an efficient year. unless turgeon can miracle an interior post threat to open things up. jordan took alot of attention last season.
