Hey yall, I got sick at the summer camp I work at so I'm home briefly with some internet and figured I'd start some basketball debate that has nothing to do with recruiting.
With all the talk of Jordan leaving, Gary leaving, recruiting, etc, I think people have forgotten how well terrell stoglin played last year. I've only been following college bball for 5-6 years and maryland for 2-3 but as a sports nut, I've gone back and learned a lot about what I missed. That being said, i dont think there is a precedent in terps recent history for how freaking great stogs played, especially toward the end of last year. In many of those games, it seemed like he could do anything he wanted on the court to get to the basket or get off one of those crazy shots that seemed to go in more times than it didnt. And this was as a FRESHMAN. I know this part is gonna stir up a lot of debate, but can someone tell me how stogs skill set differs from kembas? Both arent lights out outside shooters, but both can get to the basket almost at will and are faster than everyone else on the court. Neither are awesome passers, but both seem to get the ball to the right guy, and if not, figure out how to score anyway. Im in no way saying that he will lead us to a natty next year, we just dont have the guys around him to do that, but why cant stogs have a similar year to kemba last year? Im expecting him to put up around 20 ppg on a mediocre team and win us 2-5 more games than we should. Especially playing against skilled, big teams like UNC and Dook next year, having our quick little weapon that can get under them and score at the rim is gonna keep us in those games. If Jordan had stayed and the offense was based around him (a 6-9 center with shoes on) again, we would spend most of the UNC type games getting shots swatted and being destroyed on the glass. Im not saying we will beat them but we just might make it interesting with the small, quick team we will have.
This is just one optimists view on the matter, and I will be the first to say that next year might be tough to watch, especially with the monster classes coming in the next few years, but lets not completely write this team off especially with a potentially great player like stoglin on it.
