Dematha High School...

Okay, I just got to get this off my chest.

With the article today about Dematha's Head Coach being upset we weren't showing him or his players any love, I'm actually kind of pissed.  As if the love we've shown them in the past has been recipricated.  Yes, we have a few players on our roster from Dematha.  Most notably Kenny Tate.  But other than him, and an occasional player here and there, just how much do we get out of Dematha?  In fact, in either football or basketball, Dematha has been the biggest heart ache for Terp fans on the recruiting trail imaginable.  We beg and cajole and are mostly ignored by their best players.  They send football players to Penn State and other programs.  And in basketball, they send players to our direct rivals.  And once in a while they send someone our way.  We get the freaking scraps from a High School not five miles from our own campus!

My solution is to just tell Dematha to go to hell.  They've been telling us to go to hell for years.  We can find our recruits elsewhere, and there are many High School powerhouses out there that give us a lot more respect than the people at Dematha has!

As Poorly as Coach Brooks Handled This,

I have to disagree with you here. You can’t just burn a bridge to a football powerhouse that is 5 minutes down the road. I don’t think the answer is “Well they never come here anyway, so we aren’t going to bother recruiting them.” That’s a lot of local talent that you are willing to let walk away because of a beef over past futility when trying to recruit DM’s student athletes.

Add up all the Dematha greats...

Most of them wore the uniforms of other schools.

To hell with them.

The coach in the article listed 3 kids in about the past 5 yrs that have played for MD from Dematha….now lets start making a list of the kids that have played elsewhere in both basketball and football that went to Dematha

I'm sorry, but this is dumb

DM isn’t telling kids to not go to MD. They’ve just outgrown the locale. They’re big enough for location to not matter. By the virtue of their size and caliber, schools from all over the country watch DM. Everyone knows DM; DM knows everyone. It’s much more difficult for us to get guys when the coach has connections just as strong (or, now, stronger) to schools like Florida and Oklahoma as he does Maryland.

A lot of big-time locals are landed by the local schools because they get a head start. There’s no such thing as a headstart with a DM prospect. Every single major program in the country checks them out. DM exists in a bubble. It’s like we’re not even recruiting at home.

Unless, of course, you consider the actual physical aspect of it, which works just as negatively as it does positively. A lot of kids want to get out of PG County, and I quite frankly can’t blame them. I went away for college, and my surroundings were a lot better than some parts of PG County.

And, before you say it, yes, they do seem to send a lot of kids to Penn State, and have done so for a long time. Which might seem kinda fishy, until you remember that JoePa has been at PSU for forever and had a strong relationship with McGregor. No wonder they landed a fair share of DM guys.

Cutting ties with them would be a horrible move with no upside. Written mostly in jest, I’m sure, but still. Edsall needs to do everything he can to make sure he has a working relationship there.

How hard can it be???

You would think that DeMatha would have SOMEKIND of loyality to the state of MARYLAND and to the university in that state. But, no. Sad isn’t it?!? It’s all about paying your RESPECTS to the coaches at DeMatha and “EARNING” what? I know, to get it thrown into your face YEAR AFTER YEAR that the University of Maryland is not quite good enough to stay in Prince George’s County.

(One of the richest counties in the nation with THOUSANDS of job opportunities being so close to the United States of Americas government in Washington DC.)

DeMatha wants us to kiss their ass and then look at their ass when they advise these kids to go off to Penn State, Flordia. Oklahoma. Why? because we didn’t PAY our respects…..Come on!?! We NEVER felt welcomed when we played DeMatha. We did at other schools. I’m not saying cutting ties is the way to go. But, REALLY what do you want from us???

it’s not like we have to give out gold bars… just keep a good relationship, and be there when the players who want to be home come knocking – you got it right Ben.

Dematha depends on...

being able to tell ITS recruits that they can send their kids anywhere. I say we cut them off. We blackball them.

Let Dematha explain to the parents of their recruits why their kids are blackballed from Maryland. I’m thinking the old Dematha legacy is dying and we need to give it a shove into the trash bin of history.

Wow, Dude

You are really butt hurt over this, aren’t you? I think that blackballing a national powerhouse, or any school for that matter, would do more damage to Maryland’s reputation. What recruit would want to play for a program that would be so petty as to blackball an entire school because of a few comments to the local newspaper? No kid would put up with that Draconian bullshit to play at a middling ACC school.

Also, I doubt DeMatha’s legacy is dying. The football program may be down for now with the new coaching change and a power shift to Good Counsel, but they will bounce back. Also, their basketball program is still dominant and they still succeed in just about every other sport. I wouldn’t say DeMatha is done.

Plain and simple...

We don’t need them.

Dematha recruits signed by year:

2012 – 0
2011 – 1 – Michael Williams
2010 – 0
2009 – 1 – Pete DeSousa
2008 – 1 – Kenny Tate
2007 – 0
2006 – 0
2005 – 1 – Anthony Wiseman
2004 – 1 – Edwin Williams
2003 – 2 – Josh Wilson, Ryan Mitch (never played)
2002 – 0

Not exactly earth shaking.

I will take “How to make a bad situation worse” for 200 Alex.

If Md did nothing wrong here, they could “correct” that by taking your suggestion and actively make a one week minor low key PR issue into a festering sore that wont heal and could spread to other schools and recruits as they keep seeing more and more negativity and escalating charges and ill will.

You seem to not understand the consequences of blackballing a school.

Saying “we don’t need them” is probably accurate. Most college programs don’t “need” any high school. But rejecting all of their players just because they go to DeMatha would make Maryland look petty and most people would conclude that the program doesn’t have its priorities straight if they are willing to stoop so low as to start a war with a local high school. I for one would seriously question the Maryland football program if they ignored talented DM recruits that are interested in playing for UMD. Your idea is radical and just plain stupid.

Oh, and they obviously don't send players anywhere in basketball

Even if they wanted to, they don’t have the influence. AAU has more pull. DCA had more to do with Quinn Cook going to Duke that DM did. Really, Nolan Smith is the biggest reason, but then DCA and then DM.

Dematha players are average.

the second tier players are better to recruit (other than Tate who is the greatest Dematha player). Terps got 2 of 7 nfl dematha players and 3 of 11 NBA players. Only Adrian Dantley was any good but not a winner and could never compete today in the NBA as a 6’5" power forward. Mustaf (highest recruit ever) is a murderer, Simpkins (#1 point guard ) sucked and got 450 parking tickets. Garrison was a poor student and was a power forward who got every single shot inside 5 feet stuffed in his face and couldn’t rebound. Branch had a drug arrest in college. Who cares?…I mean really. Dematha has 7 nfl players. for gods sake Churchill (my alma mater) which SUCKS in football has 4 NFL players 2 of which were pro-bowlers better than any Dematha player. Personally I like Dematha’s second tier players who sometimes develop and contribute that their sucky 1st tier players.

by TERPLANDLORD on Jul 30, 2011 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

I am not trying to be hurtful.

I mean these guys are obviously trying their best but when players are hyped to be sooo great in high school and you are excited to see them play and then they turn out to be too slow or get half of their shots stuffed back in their face….., And then they get on academic probation and get 450 parking tickets, AND THEN THEY MURDER SOMEONE, and then they get a drug arrest, and then they get DUI (austin freeman) or get gun and drug charges (joe forte) after being famous for wearing a scooby doo shirt on the celtic sideline since he never played. They just don’t contribute to winning after high school.

by TERPLANDLORD on Jul 30, 2011 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You guys are crazy

Dematha is one of the best sports program in the state of Maryland. You have to have relationship with this school you have to. Saying them go to the hell is stupid. It Randy fault I believe when he was hired he say I’m going have relationship with this schools in Maryland keep talent in state. He hasn’t done that and he is failing in recruiting. My cousin Adrian Coxson wr for Maryland said he also big headed. Also good friend with stefon diggs who by the way is favoring Maryland. Back to my point he said coach Randy is cool but he said his coach told him not to go to Maryland because they fell there no connection between the schools coaches and that a shame when the school is in Maryland.

All I know is

Edsall was probably the hottest coaching commodity available this year and we got him. Michigan and WVU and Miami would take him in a heartbeat. Leach is like an STD…nobody wants him. We don’t deserve him and we got him. I love Ralph but he really left a lot of loose ends…lost scholarships, bad attendance and players failing out. Edsall will kick ass in our BOD conference.

and let us not forget

Coach Randy brought UConn from 1-AA to a Fiesta Bowl appearance. Who here honestly thinks Ralph could have done that? Would it have been nice to have Leach? Yes, for about a year or two. Then his crap would start wearing on people and then we would be stuck with a big contract and no money to do anything about it. Coach knows how to get it done, so let’s let him do it.

I hope Edsall is like this....

I watched Stanford’s bowl game, and I was impressed to hell with how their players were giving 110% ALL THE TIME. Even the guys not directly involved in the play were going like this. That’s discipline. I watched as Stanford crushed even though their players seemed statistically over matched at every position, well, except QB.

I hope Edsall can get MD players to respond like that. Recruits will come.

BINGO!!! bb p

Someone needs to make the call to rectify a souring situation. There is a lot at stake even if neither school believes they need the other. I would think that DM would benefit more from having a major Local University on their side versus The Major University having one of many Local High Schools on theirs. Sorta like a Big Brother – Little Brother scenario. But somebody has pissed in someones Cheerios.

We need DM as much as they need UM

As a graduate of both DM and Maryland I am the first to say I wish we got more DM players to come to Maryland but to say we should not attempt to fix the relationship is stupid. DM is not only one of the top athletic high schools in Maryland – its one of the tops in the country. Their best athletes get recruited by everyone and it starts in ninth grade. The argument that the football program is slipping is ridiculous. Just this past fall DM had multiple 4 star and a 5 star (top ten) recruit. Just because there isn’t a ton of talent in this years senior class does not mean there isn’t talented underclassmen. Edsall and the staff need to start mending frnces now so the situation doesn’t worsen.

Yes, and...

the culture they feed these kids is, you can go to your dream school, and if you don’t get your dream school and aren’t good enough, you can use Maryland as a fall back option.

The players we have gotten out of there over the last forty years does not justify us kissing their butts in the least. Very little of our success can be attributed to the players we get out of Dematha. We would not miss them in the least.

that's the old MD we knew and loved

the new MD is still completing the rise to academic powerhouse. It’s not done, but I see President Loh continuing Dr. Mote’s push on academics. In another 10 years, UMD will reach an even higher level. It’s hard and takes time. But then, UMD may be a first destination for DM grads.
