Navy Still After John Tillman
We all thought this brief pursuit by Navy to try to lure John Tillman away from Maryland and return to the school where he'd previously coached as an assistant for years was over. Not so says the Baltimore Sun. Alledgely, Navy hadn't contacted Tillman as of last week, but reached out to Maryland recently as a courtasy to say they were planning to do so. I just can't see Tillman leaving because 1. Maryland Lacrosse >>> Navy Lacrosse and 2. Tillman's buy-out, according to the Sun, is around $500,000. That's a lot of $$$ to shell out for a lacrosse coach, especially for Navy. I doubt anything will happen, but we'll be keeping an eye on it...

"As a Courtesy?"
Dave – I thought they must request and receive permission from UMD. That’s how it works for coaches in other sports under contract. I’m not saying they wouldn’t grant it, but just that’s how it’s done by my recollection.

I always thought...
…they had to grant permission too, but the Sun makes it seem like it’s not “required.” Regardless, I can’t see Navy coughing up $500,000 to get Tillman. That would be an insane investment in lacrosse…
yes
it’s not like bball and fball where the extra winning will put that many extra fans in seats to make up for the enormous salary cost.

Why would you leave
your team just lost in the national championship and a majority of the starters are returning. In addition you are bringing in a stud Mid fielder who was Ivy league Frosh of the year. MD will contend for a national title again next year.

by that reasoning
Hopkins, UVa, Syracuse’s coaches all would be considering Navy job too if approached…

tillman spent 12 yrs as an assistant coach at navy. he probably had some strong relationships there. 12 yrs is a long time. plus he might like the academy atmosphere which is quite different than maryland. harvard might be more like navy because the importance of academics is placed much higher than athletics.
This is kind of a dumb debate, because program is so much bigger than city
But having been to all of them:
Annapolis >>>>>>>>>>> Cuse >>>> Charlottesvile > CP
C’ville is one of the most overrated towns in America. It and CP are neck-and-neck IMO. Syracuse is actually a cool place when it isn’t snowing, but none of them hold a candle to Annapolis.
In terms of recruiting
Annapolis is the mecca for lacrosse. Long Island and the greater Annapolis area regularly produce the most D1 prospects in the country, although MD probably lands nearly as much of the Annapolis talent as Navy does
Perception different from reality
College Park vs. state of MD, and vs. rest of country

At UVa, better
stay on campus…then again, campus isn’t exactly a treat sometimes either

And stay on campus at Puke while we're at it...

Crime rates acknowledged, College Park is still a bit of a crap hole at the moment.
A LOT of abandoned buildings and should be abandoned buildings. Fortunately, there are a ton of brand new apartment buildings under construction, and I think that will lead a revival of sorts along route 1. Too bad I just graduated…
Definitely a blight on the neighborhood.
I can’t imagine how they put up with it. Plaid shorts and polo shirts, day after day. Think of the gallons and gallons of peroxide. The horror.
I rellly doubt if Tillman lives in College Park.
This is not to say that the rest of PG county is a paradise, but there obviously are some nice places to live in the DC suburbs, although none as picturesque as Annapolis. Still, it’d be hard to see him leaving for: 1) less money (probably) 2) tougher recruiting restrictions 3) much less likelihood of winning a National Championship.
He must be good friends with Richie Meade, who’s retiring from Navy and who was his boss for 11 years. You would think that last year when he was offered the job at MD he would have had some inkling that Meade was intending to retire soon and if he was that allfired interested in the Navy job he would have turned MD down and waited for Navy. Still, things have been going rather well for MD athletics in the last 6-12 mos, so we’re about due for a kick in the ass.
Meade was forced out by Navy
Aa far as I know he didn’t want to retire
I have a feeling Navy would be willing to shell out some cash for Tillman
Navy takes care of its coaches better than some would think, especially non-revenue. Not to mention lacrosse is huge at the academy, I would go so far as to say the support received by the lacrosse team by the fanbase easily exceeds that of the basketball team. Attendance at Navy games is probably greater than an average MD game, and a couple of Navy-Hopkins games played at Navy were at the top for highest attendance at an NCAA lacrosse game outside of the final four for a while (before ‘Cuse packed the Carrier Dome a couple times). Navy lacrosse has quite the pull with locals in Annapolis (I’ve lived here all my life). I’m telling ya…don’t underestimate the Navy lacrosse job
I've been here a year now, and LAX seems to be #1 in Naptown
There was a definite buzz during the final four.
Luckily, it looks like Tillman will be staying
Navy came after him pretty aggressively, but he seems to be in CP for the long run. I actually think Navy may have been willing to give him a pay raise compared to what he is already making, but winning at Navy is not as easy as winning at MD, and with similar expectations.
Terp lacrosse is a top 3 job
No question Tillman is in the catbird seat of college lacrosse at CP. Money is money, but UMD lacrosse is synonomous with winning. Can’t get much better.
Also, Durham is the anal cavity of NC. More crime, drugs, rapes, murders and felonies of any NC city per capita. My friend was attacked by a gang with claw hammers last year just for a case of meat right in downtown Durham in broad daylight. Spent 2 months in the hospital.. Very nasty place.
