Mychal Parker, the Forgotten 4 Star (Lessons Learned)

With all this concern over recruiting, we sometimes forget that we have a 4 star recruit already on the team who we haven't really seen yet.  Remember this kid was ranked about the same as JA (#45 in his class).

This article below talks about Mychal Parker and his "lessons learned" from last year.  It's a pretty decent article, talking about how he was immature last year, how he's grown since then and how he won't make the same mistakes.  Remember he wasn't benched for his play -- it was his "immaturity" off the court and personal differences with Gary.

http://www.wdnweb.com/2011/05/31/lessons-learned/

Some of it is pretty interesting.  But it still leaves me wondering exactly what he was doing that was so bad that it landed him in Gary's dog house all year.  "Immaturity" and "enjoying college life too much" doesn't seem that bad.  I mean, this isn't BYU -- you can drink a beer and make out with girls.  Does anyone know what he did?

Regardless, if he really does grow up this year, and put in some work ... we could get a lot of production from a source we never really thought about.  We may (in effect) get two 4 stars this year.

If was a tough transition for him

I think he played in a fairly weak conference in the middle of nowhere in high school

Nice post and story

The story written about Parker was a good read. Many of us on the outside don’t always see what’s going on on the inside of these young men and women. How he thanks Coach Williams shows a lot of gratuity and maturity. Being a young man as he is and to understand not only what the coach did to him, but what the coach did for him says a lot about his growing character and the man he’s becoming. I Bleed Purple and Gold for my Ravens, but I also sometimes drip the Red and Gold for our Terrapins. Win of lose.

I don't buy

That the ONLY reason Parker wasn’t playing much last year was because he was immature off the court. Maybe that was part of the reason, but if Parker was physically and mentally ready to play, he would have. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that he didn’t have much of a structured offense in HS and he struggled to learn Gary’s systems.

by aholla30 on Jun 5, 2011 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

Not many HS players

have that much of a structure in the O coming out of HS, but hopefully he’ll benefit from what he’s learned and he’ll make his move into the starting lineup!

Comeback player of the year?

Wow, that was a very interesting article on many levels. Hopefully, this will be the feel good story for next year. We could use him! Maybe if all the stars align, he will live up to his potential and there will be “Parker Park” signs amongst the fans at Comcast.

He was billed as a high flyer, but when he did get in games he looked quite earth-bound. That said, Milbourne didn’t look good his first year either, and he turned out just fine.

by Highrock on Jun 5, 2011 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

the only thing keeping parker on the ground was his hesitation on offense

he doesnt believe in gravity. if you dont believe me just look at some of his highlights from cupcake games when he didnt hold back.

Lets gooo Maryland

I thought

he always looked lost unless he had the ball in his hands looking to score… which wasn’t very often. Defense I thought he was pretty good in a man to man set. His helpside needed work.

by Jeffro78 on Jun 5, 2011 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

He didn't look quick enough on defense.

Certainly not quick enough on guards….and was faked out a lot by bigger wings as well.

by Zol on Jun 5, 2011 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He spent so little time on the floor.

He never had a chance to get comfortable and was probably constantly looking over his shoulder, waiting to be yanked.

I think some of these observations / critiques are valid

BUT, I don’t think these observations should lead to far-reaching conclusions like “he’s not good.”

I don’t think anyone would deny that he has the physical gifts to be great. I liked his athleticism, agility and quickness. He’s a pretty sick athlete, with huge potential.

Whatever we saw, it was not much. I like the upside and I think he’ll be big if he puts in work.

ive always had a good feeling about parker on the team

seeing as he didnt get much playing time last year i think he is set to make a sudden impact this year. he could easily be a force putting us back on the map

Lets gooo Maryland

The thing is...

with only nine guys on the team, everybody should get their shot, including Parker, Padgett and Pankey (the 3 P’s) not to mention Pallsen anf Pe’shon (I couldn’t resist: more P’s). Any or all of them could surprise the hell out of us or fall flat on their faces. It’ll cetainly be interesting

by retlag on Jun 5, 2011 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

of those 5 P's

one has to be starting, so whoever that is will get a lot of opportunity

let's hope

the guys turn into the Killer P’s! 4 those too young, Miami Dolphs had Killer B’s back in the day.

I though he didn't play much was because

He was so rw coming into college park that Gary couldn’t put him onto the court without disaster falling. All the talent in the world but it didn’t translate immediately to the college game and he needed to sit and learn and be coached for a season.

SMH

Run-on sentences…

by stripesean on Jun 6, 2011 9:38 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It must have been some combination

There were times where Parker was just lost on the court. There was one instance in a winter game where the Terps where playing defense and Bowie was constantly giving Parker directions during the play. Immaturity may have something to do with it but Parker just didn’t understand Gary’s system as well as some of the other players. I believe if Turgeon runs a different system, Parker’s PT will increase significantly.

by nhlnflnba18414 on Jun 7, 2011 9:43 AM EDT reply actions

I believe

Turgeon runs the motion offense right, so this will involve less cutting vs. the Flex, so yeah perhaps the Flex was a little hard to grasp for Parker, but I think he’ll do well this year and start.

by Big Spoon on Jun 7, 2011 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

yes

plus guards aggressively taking it to the rack is a by-product of his O.
