COLLEGE PARK, MD - MAY 6: President of the University of Maryland Wallace D. Loh (L) and Athletic Director Kevin Anderson (R) applaud basketball coach Gary WIlliams, during the announcement of WIlliams' retirement May 6, 2011 at the Comcast Center in College Park, Maryland. Just got home. I wasn't able to attend the presser, nor watch it live. But wow, what a send-off. There's tons of other stuff to get to, but for now...just reminisce. First, watch the video montage played before the announcement:

I stated tearing up at the 0:55 mark.

And now Gary's speech:

*sniffle* I think there's something in my eye. Mostly straightforward, but when he started to tear up at the beginning, I almost lost it.

Reading reports of the presser, this was done the right way, 100%. When Kevin Anderson was asked about other candidates, he refused to talk about anyone other than Gary. The people at the presser were overwhelmingly positive. Dave even started a "Thank You Gary" chant! I never wanted Gary to leave. But if he had to, this was almost a perfect send-off.

Even better, Maryland President Wallace Loh announced that he will "recommend" Gary's name to be placed on the court at the Comcast Center. Hopefully that ball gets rolling instantly; frankly, it should've been done a long time ago. It's a shame he never got to coach on Gary Williams Court (with the GaryLand logo).

If you want to read a recap of it, the best is probably here. Dave (and maybe Ben G.) were in attendance, and I'm sure they'll add in their thoughts, too. This isn't the last you'll see of this.
