Maryland Lacrosse Topples Syracuse in OT, Will Meet Duke in Final Four

via insidelacrosse.com

By all accounts, a thriller of a game. I wasn't able to watch today, but anytime an unseeded team - granted, even one as good as Maryland - beats the top seed in overtime, it's generally must-watch lacrosse.

The Terrapins got six goals from six different players, including the game-winner in overtime from Grant Catalino, to upset once-beaten Syracuse, 6-5, and secure a spot in the Final Four in Baltimore.

There, the Terrapins will play 5th-seeded Duke, which defeated Notre Dame earlier today. Maryland's familiar with the Blue Devils, of course, having played them twice already this season and splitting the series. Duke took the first game 9-8, but the Terps won in the ACC Championship Game a few weeks ago, 11-9.

Being relatively green at lax "analysis", take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt, but ... does it seem like things are kind of coming together? Maryland just beat the best team in the country, bar none. The #2, #3, and #4 seeds are all gone, too. They next play Duke - a great team, but a team they just beat weeks ago - and after that get the winner of 6th-seeded UVA and 7th-seeded Denver. All good teams and I wouldn't be surprised or even particularly dissapointed if Maryland lost any of those games, but there is no mountain to climb in this group. That's even more true when you remember that Maryland is the de facto home team in this series and the fan support should be great.

Congratulations to the team. That Tillman hire looks better everyday. Now: buy tickets.

Looks like you can only get the weekend

$75 is a lot to shell out for lacrosse……wish they just had individual days

Yeah thats out my price range

some decent pub

Just noticed si.com has the lax win listed in their “Top Stories” links at the moment. Also, read the discussion thread below the game article on espn. Some people see the Terps’ game plan as smart and carried out in a disciplined fashion while others see it as “bad for the sport” and sort of last straw, that the NCAA better institute a shot clock for next year. Not knowing much about lacrosse I’m happy to go with the disciplined game plan angle. Time to beat Duke again.

by livedincole on May 22, 2011 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

They should institute a shot clock

In the long run, it’ll be better for the sport.

But hey, we can be the last beneficiaries before the rule change, as opposed to on the receiving end like the Rudy Gay fiasco

Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?

Let the game evolve as needed

But coach/strategize the best win you can under the existing rules though. Dean Smith came up with the 4 corners until they put in the shot clock in hoops…

Everyone is making a big deal about the win lol

Both teams were evenly matched. You cant really call it an upset.

by stripesean on May 22, 2011 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Talent-wise, that's true

But Cuse was #1 in the country and had lost one time. Maryland was unseeded and lost multiple times, including once to Colgate two games ago. I’d say it’s an upset.

Student Tix

Anybody have any idea if the maryland box office is going to offer student tickets? Not trying to drop 85 (with fees) on the game

by RavensnTerps on May 22, 2011 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed. While I have already had tickets to this for a while, it is terrible that they are charging $100 for not so great lower level seats.

The other team sees something in their game that they want to attack, and me playing in the same league as Prince, we played the same teams and they didn’t attack me the same. So why does that happen?" - CB Jimmy Smith

Exactly

I just don’t know how many students can afford to go to this game. I live in the Baltimore area and would absolutely go but i can’t justify spending the same money I’d drop on an NFL game for college lacrosse.

Great Win!!! I like the new coach

Did an outstanding job this season. Is a keeper.

And He Gave Props!

To Cottle for assembling this team. Then admitted that all they needed was someone to help them put it all together. Great Win! Great Finish! Just a casual LAX fan from somewhere its not played, but if the Terps are playing, I am watching. Good Job Guys and Good Job Coach Tillman

Great to beat #1 'Cuse

Terps have the talent to win it all. Just looks like they need to be motivated occasionally. Enjoyed the game today on ESPNU. 3 of 4 teams in the Final 4 are ACC.

If anyone wants some lacrosse insight

I follow college lacrosse closely and I will tell you that Virginia is the best team left right now. While many will say that the combo attack of Ryan Young and Grant Catalino is very, very good, it hurts me to say that Virginia’s combo of Steele Stanwick and Chris Bocklett is slightly better. Those two are so dangerous, but so fun to watch play. I actually think they are much better without the Bratton twins, because those guys are huge ball hogs. Virginia’s assists have gone up significantly since the twins went out of the lineup.

Duke is not nearly as good as their ranking says they are. They overcame a Notre Dame team that is known for their great defense, but lacks serious offense. I really don’t see our Terps having much trouble with these guys for the 3rd time, especially with us playing in Lax Nation, Baltimore (best high school lax area in the USA). I say we continue this ride and walk away with a 13-8 victory. Catalino owns Duke by the way.

Denver is a wildcard, because they have two players who demand so much attention. I would much rather face them than Virginia though, because we run a very exotic defense that can handle Denver’s game plan.

Short Term/Long Term

Face it-next season is going to be a disaster. Gary Williams left a team with nothing in the front court but with some hope in the guard/small forward positions. But now with the potential loss of Anderson and only Faust coming in next year will be a disaster. BUT, MT is showing his efforts in recruiting and doing the necessary things that Gary didn’t want to do – AAU circuit. So short term MD basketball is going to be a disaster and we will have to live with it. Long term there is a potential to rebuild MD into a national power – just as it should be.

What does this have to do with lacrosse?

in fairness

there hasn’t been a basketball post in a couple days, so people (like me) are understandably going a little crazy. this is the next logical place.

Women's Lax. . .

Also won. Led by Sykesville native Katie Schwartzmann

Beat Duke LAX weekend!

The women meet Duke in the semifinals on Friday. The men meet Duke in the semifinals on Saturday. After they each crush their respective opponents like the bugs they are, it’s on to the finals!

I don't think this could have happened under Cottle.

As much as I like him. He was a good recruiter and his teams were well trained, but I don’t feel his game planning and in-game coaching were good enough against elite opponents. Tillman just outcoached the most successful LAX coach of the last 10 years. Also this team seems to have more grit and resilience than previous squads that seemed to wilt when things went bad. Mind you, these guys seem a bit mercurial and unpredictable (losing to Colgate???), but if he can keep them focused for 2 more games, they can beat anybody!

by retlag on May 23, 2011 9:33 AM EDT reply actions

The Colgate loss

happened in part because two starters were out injured, correct? Can’t blame it all on injuries, but I have to think a healthy Maryland beats Colgate 9 out of 10 times.

No question.

But even with 2 starters out, MD should beat Colgate. I think there may have been a bit of a post-ACC-championship ltedown on the part of the Terps.

Colgate ain't no slouch

I think they were a definite snub with the ncaa tournament.

Fan of lacrosse

I can be totally honest about not being a lacrosse fan in the past. I decided this year to really watch and pay attention to the whole game. I can now truly say after really watching a full game I am hooked. The action is incredible and I cannot wait until Saturday night playing Duke. I am now residing in Nebraska after moving out of the Maryland area years ago but I can guarantee that if I was closer to the area my behind would be sitting in one of the seats at M and T Saturday night.

by Fear the TurGle on May 23, 2011 6:54 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

THIS game got you hooked?

Coming from someone who has watched lacrosse all of his life (I am 17), the Syracuse game was one of the most boring games I have ever seen. It was great because Maryland won, but you should see a well run team in transition or a great goalie in his last game displaying his true passion or a well run team perform flawlessly. We are lucky as Marylanders to have the greatest league in high school lacrosse, the MIAA, with historically great teams like St. Paul’s, Gilman, Boys’ Latin, etc., and also great college teams like Johns Hopkins, Loyola, Navy, Maryland, etc.

It is truely a blessing.
