Gregg Doyel should be fired

I think this guys actions are a disgrace

he really should be fired by cbs sportsline as they are unprofessional and show how bias writing can be and rankings for that matter.  Debbie yow is a joke as well.  get over it.  NC state is a middle of the pack job and you couldnt land anyone to come there even by throwing money at them.  if anything this will motivate gary to continue to stick it to the wolfpack in the coming yrs.  go gary.  only terps fans can get on you about stuff......

You can't change your username

You could make a new account, but you can’t do a one-off change.

I think you can change it by creating firedoyel

and then going to My Dashboard, then Edit Account, then Claim an older SB Nation blog account

this is ignorant

middle of the pack job? nc state has over 200 more wins in their history than maryland, and 1 more national championship. it’s fine to be angry about what Yow said, but the rest of that was silly and uninformed.

The thing is that is in its history

Right now, NC State is a middle of the pack job. NC State is the 3rd team in North Carolina, behind UNC and Dook. It will always be that way. NC State hasn’t done anything in the past few years. As the guy below me said:

“What have you done for me lately”

by terpfan812 on Apr 5, 2011 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

yea, third team in north carolina

which is pretty much the heart of college basketball

it's a pretty distant third too

I don’t want to beat up on you but it’s really tough to defend NC State athletics right now. Even more so with yao at the helm.

Let's not give them that much credit

They’re 4th at best. Given recent history, Wake Forest has a much stronger case for 3rd in NC. Hell, even Barton College has better recent success than NC State with a D2 championship a few years back.

by beavs on Apr 6, 2011 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

History matters, but not that much

What happens in the 70s is important, but not as much as most N.C. State fans seem to think. The game has changed, and success decades ago is no longer an accurate picture of how easy it is to win at Job X.

What’s more important are the present conditions. Right now, N.C. State is the third best team in its own state, right in the shadow of Duke and Carolina. Their coaches will be judged by that standard, and it’s a pretty ridiculous one. Even if Gottfried is able to make you guys relevant again, what happens after he loses to Duke and Carolina a few years in a row? How long do you put up with that? Most other jobs don’t have a measuring stick as imposing as two of the top 5 programs in the country.

The history is nice, but it’s not nearly as important as the other factors. Facilities are okay but aren’t better than the conference standard. Recruiting base is decent but there’s a ton of competition for it. Fan passion is great, but it has the flip-side of creating higher job pressure.

I just don’t see anything that distinguishes N.C. State as a top-notch / elite job. Then again, the phrasing “middle of the pack” relies upon knowing what “the pack” is – if it’s high-majors, then he’s right. If it’s jobs country wide, well obviously no.

by Ben Broman on Apr 5, 2011 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

3rd in NC is even a stretch...

Within the last decade, it’s hard not to argue Wake hasn’t had a better program than NC State… NC State hasn’t made the tournament in like 5 years, right?

I am absolutely rooting for NC State to rebound for the sake of the credibility of the conference. I hope this new guy is competent. When the ACC was indisputably the top conference in the nation earlier in the decade, they were consistently one of those dangerous teams, but even then they were still in the middle of the pack. But in a good conference, there’s nothing wrong with being pedestrian… just ask UConn.

There’s no denying that there are a great many jobs in the conference that are more prestigious. And no denying that Debbie Yow is a f***ing psycho hose beast. Still, I hope NC State at least returns to respectability. I think we all do. As long as their rebuilding wins don’t come against Maryland.

i appreciate what you're saying

but i don’t think too many people on here are in the same boat, im not trolling, my fiancee actually just recently graduated from maryland, so i support them every single time they play in every sport except for when they play against nc state, but from what im reading, it seems like everyone on here just hopes state burns to the ground and they’re never back to what they were 20 years ago

I'm in the same "boat" as mmford, as well as most others I know

We don’t have any hatred for NC State, they’re one of the more likeable teams in the conference. Unless NC State is playing Maryland I usually cheer them on. Like mmford, I think having them rebound would make our conference look a lot more solid than it has in past years. Most people I speak to agree

by tumi on Apr 6, 2011 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

yup

nc state is my next favorite acc team, i would love if they could usurp unc and duke, as long as that doesnt include wins over UMD

Lets gooo Maryland

Yeah, I got no problem with NC State.

Except for Julius Hodge, they are a very respectable entity.

From reading their site, it seems like they aren’t sold on Yow either, so we should cut them some slack.

whoa whats wrong with hodge?

and yeah we dont like her, we only put up with her because of her late sister

it wasnt just the 70s

it was the 40s to the end of the 80s, state was better than duke or unc for 44 years, and ever since valvano’s unfortunate departure, state hasnt been able to recover

It appears that FIREGARY

has sorta taken on the role as Gary’s parent or guardian. Ya know, when your kid does something bad and that ticks off a neighbor, and said neighbor scolds the kid, and the parent then gets ticked at the neighbor. Then parent explains to the kid, sometimes rather strongly, you can’t act that way or do those things. In other words, I can gripe about and discipline my kid, but no one else can, save for a teacher.

F/G – I am impressed….

You're giving Doyel too much credit

You have to appreciate Gregg Doyel for what he is. He’s not a journalist, he’s an online columnist whose entire schtick is to stir the pot with a “provocative” article and get more page views. The equivalent of a morning radio shock jock. We’ll see what happens if he writes something on the cbssportline site, or if he sees the error of his radio interviews and just keeps quiet.

Calling out a Hall of Fame coach as a coward if he doesn’t return your call when you accuse him (with no proof) of sabotaging the N.C. State job search is bush league, the M.O. of wrestlers or Fox News/MSNBC political rabble rousers. That’s what Doyel is.

Enjoy N.C. State, Dr. Yow is all yours now.

I feel bad for Pack fans and Gottfried

This is what they received:

1991 excerpt from Seattle Times article:

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19910616&slug=1289416

There’s a lot about Debbie Yow, 40, that’s harder to explain. Since becoming athletic director last August, she has been embroiled in a number of publicized controversies. Some critics have portrayed her as everything from a hard-bitten dragon lady whose zealous management style caused a rift with veteran basketball coach Rich Grawer. Others see her as an overly sensitive little girl who didn’t fight hard enough to get the Billikens into the National Invitation Tournament.
