In a few hours the Final 4 will take place, and in one of the games two coaches will go at it that are notorious for their cheating of the system just to get a few more wins. Coach Cal has vacated more banners than most have won, and is famous more for his "questionable" recruiting tactics than his winning. Calhoun has actually won championships, but is known far and wide as a pompous asshole that takes shots at his own schools womens basketball team, and will be sitting out games next year for recruiting violations.
Has Maryland recently had the type of success that we did 10 years ago? No, we haven't. But aren't their things more important than winning? Isn't this a college basketball program, not the NBA. Call me crazy, but I like rooting for a clean program where we get to know our players and form bonds with them before they bolt for the NBA, leaving a trail of NCAA-sanction slime behind them. I don't mind that we aren't in the top 10 every year, it makes us appreciate the years we are great. How much fun did we have last year rooting for GV, EHayes, and the team winning a share of the ACC? I would say that as a fan base we had more fun last year than, say, Kentucky did. The tournament is a different story, but we ENJOYED that season, we cherished it.
We were down this year, and might be next year is Jordan leaves, but we need to remember what it means to be a fan and what it means to be a college coach. I wouldn't pick anyone other than Gary to run this ship.
