A lot of people get mad at Gary and staff for missing out on five-star recruits that are probably collecting cash from boosters or AAU "coaches" or are probably more trouble than they are worth. I don't. However there have been some notable, very gettable guys that the staff never got turned down on because they never thought to offer, some of whom may have really helped this year's team and teams of future years.
You may recognize this name as Ashton Pankey's teammate at St Anthony's who Gary checked out last year. He was rated a top-100 recruit by ESPN, far above Pankey and with none of the injury bugs Ashton has suffered through. This year he has averaged 7 points and 4 rebounds as a freshman at Oregon State of all places, selecting OSU over other luminaries as Providence, Seton Hall and St Johns (pre Steve Lavin). Might have been nice to have him in the lineup next to Mt Williams next year with Dino graduating. If Ashton goes the way of Jerome Burney this will have been a real face palm.
Jamal Olasewere was a senior at Springbrook in 2009 when as a 6'6 power forward (who towered over Maryland's PF at the time Dave Neal) and was a 1st team Post All Met. He played really well at the Capital Classic, leading many to believe a Georgetown offer was imminent. However that offer never came and Jamal landed in the NEC and Jamal is averaging 12 and 7 in leading LIU to the NEC regular season title and a 26-5 record. Undersized yes, but the extremely tenacious local would have surely pushed James Padgett for playing time and opened the door for more locals to see that Gary could make them better. Not a huge face palm on this one but his team is winning games. Unlike our team.
I know I don't even have to write this one but how in God's name did little brother only get offered by Liberty? I mean, with all the scholarships that Gary has thrown away, a guy who's family lineage is pictured next to the three point line on wikipedia (not really, but it should be) never even gets a preferred-walk-on type gesture? Obviously this one is even more on Seth Greenberg, but I am guessing the Terps win 25 games this year just by having a junior of his caliber on the team. Seth averaged 10PPG this year and basically beat UNC by himself a month or so ago. Face palm factor is a 10 on this one, possibly 11 being that he transferred to Duke of course. All the staff had to do was offer and he was most likely ours. Think he might have nudged Sean Mosely out of the starting lineup?
