Worst 5 Man Recruiting Class in MD History?
Two big guys who could not cut it at Maryland and transferred, two guards who never got better, and 1 guy Dino Gregory who improved each year but is nothing more than a rotational player in the post who can give you a solid 20 minutes a game. Adrian Bowie came into UMD as a guy who could drive left and couldn't shoot. 4 years later Bowie still is all left hand and is not a good shooter. Cliff Tucker never became a leader, he never became consistent on offense or defense and he never looked like he gave a crap on the court.
This is what they will be remembered for at Maryland, making it to the NIT in their senior year in one of the worst ACCs in history, the first time the NCAA has ever had 68 teams in the tourney and a freaking joke of a bubble field. On Facebook in the summer I saw status updates from some of these seniors talking about THIS IS OUR TIME TO SHINE or they would comment to their friends that they will finally get minutes and get to start. It sure was their time to shine if all they care about is individual stats like minutes, shot attempts and the amount of times they got on TV but no leadership, no willpower and this is what we are left with. Sad story that won't even end on Senior Night because an NIT game might just be at Comcast and I can't wait!

All of These Guys Would Be Solid...
If they were bench players. Unfortunately, they were the best we could get, so they ended up starting when they weren’t talented enough to be anything but mediocre. Bowie was a 3 star recruit who was known for being a quick guy who could drive left and could play good defense. That’s exactly what we got, but unfortunately that’s all we got from Bowie, with an occasional three pointer on good nights. That = bench player/energy guy, not starting 2 guard. Tucker had starter talent, but didn’t have a good enough attitude to improve. He and Braxton have to be considered the biggest disappointments in this class. Everyone else lived up to their recruiting. Terps fans just made themselves think that these guys could become good starters in the ACC. Reality struck this year.
GREAT POST!
It’s a shame we didn’t have any games scheduled for September since our theme was “Win September”! What a joke.
I’ve been looking forward to next season for a while now. It will be nice to rid ourselves of two seniors who never seemed to care whether we won or lost and never appeared to hustle or show heart. It’ll be addition by subtraction next season.
even if you’re right, stop stalking people you dont know on facebook. i bet you were one of those people who got up on terrence ross’s facebook and bitched at him for leaving. chill creeper.
Shane Walker could have cut it
he didn’t get in based on academics…..and….somehow got in at villanova…
i was more disappointed w/ the 2002 class
gilchrist, mccray, garrison, caner-medley, jamar smith
that class had way more talent than this class but disappointed us way more with early exits and academics. hopefully, at the least, the graduation rate goes up this year.
I agree, the 2002 class was supposed to be huge.
I’m also a little bitter cause I bought a #11 jersey and I’ve been ashamed to wear it. hopefully parkers turns into something so i can dust it off.
Here Here!
The 2002 class was the class that sent the program into years of mediocrity. They were supposed to be the guys that kept the program at an elite level after Dixon, Baxter, and Blake left. They sucked in 2004, but teased us by bringing home an ACC Tourney, and then Gilchrist became a selfish bastard, McCray failed out, and Garrison was too soft to play the post, but was tough enough to assault women at bars. Caner-Medley was okay, but he relied on his corner 3s too much and seemed to disappear in big games. Smith was an okay player, but he was only here for 2 seasons coming from CC and couldn’t hit free throws for shit.
Totally agree that the ‘02 class sent us in a downward spiral. As for this class no hate for Dino from me, he has given us way more than expected. I don’t agree that the others don’t try or don’t care, espeically in Bowie’s case. They just are not very good at basketball.
