Redshirting in Men's Basketball
Has Maryland ever Redshirted a player. I know Burney was Redshirted due to an injury. Pankey Parker and even Weijs could have been redshirted this year. Padgett could have saved a year of eligibility last year. Imagine this years team having Landon Milbourne if he had not wasted a year of eligibility in the 06-07 season where he sparingly left the bench. Whittington is a player who would benefit from a redshirt at Maryland.
I know that this is a tactic that is rarely seen in the major conferences, but I feel like it would be a better strategy to get the best out of its players. There are many successful examples of mid-major programs resdhirting players, I have seen it first hand at Miami University (OH) where I am currently at school. The only major program that I know of that redshirts some players is Wisconsin, and Bo Ryan runs one of the most respected programs in the country (top 25 team every year, almost flawless home record in conference play).
Gary brings in players who stay four years, so players who are more of a project coming in see little playing time there first seaon or two in College Park. If Gary doesn't want to go after 5 star recruits then he needs to implement something that gives Maryland an advantage over the competition. A team of 5th year seniors will beat a team of one and done primadonas 9 times out of ten and that is a fact. Of course, recruiting players and telling them that they will redshirt is easier said than done. The players have to be willing to redshirt and not view it as insulting. Also redshirting isn't always the best plan. Steve Goins was never going to amount into anything. And having him around 5 years not developing would look bad for the program. (Sidenote: where is he playing now? he is no longer on Troy's Roster)

Was a redshirt. He had a hard time qualifying and was not going to be available to play or practice until December of his freshman year, so they decided to redshirt him.
Also, redshirt players still count as scholarship players, so deciding to redshirt 2-3 guys a year is incredibly dumb unless you’ve got a team that is stacked in talent. Its not like football where you can redshirt your whole freshman class and still be ok.
The redshirt in basketball is rarely used, and its because it is usually not a smart thing to do, except for rare cases like Pankey and Burney where injuries happen and theyre not physically ready to play. It weakens the depth of your team, and thats why coaches never really use it.
Agree
Its actually tieing up your scholarships. The only way it should be used is if the player is injured or if you have similar players who are upper classman. Also, good luck finding a player who really wants to red shirt unless they are interested in getting a masters or another degree…. the player is basically admitting they arent good enough to play at the moment and who wants to admit that.
