Maryland Minute 12.9.11: Vellano Garners Walter Camp All-American Honors

Heads up: I updated the recruiting big boards yesterday. If you're so inclined, check them out on the widget on the left sidebar, or go straight from these links: 2012 basketball, 2012 football, 2013 basketball, 2013 football.

Now, on we go.

Joe Vellano named Walter Camp second-team All-American
Much deserved. And, given that three of the people ahead of him likely won't be in college football next year, he should be a frontrunner for many first-team All-American lists.

Maryland transfers might be sending troubling message - The Washington Post
My thoughts exactly. Not only do transfers hurt the current roster, but they hurt recruiting efforts. These guys all talk to each other, and when three locals transfer you can bet other high school players are hearing why. - BG

WBB: Lady Terps crush Delaware St., win by 75
No typo. 75 points. Largest margin of victory in school history.

Star-divide

Maryland in contact with JaKarr Sampson
As Charlotte has already pointed out in the FanPosts. Anyway, Sampson would be a fantastic get at this point: extremely athletic, great defender. Won't score many points, but ... am I crazy for thinking this team is being built around a potential Harrison twins commitment? Get the points from Andrew and Faust, let everyone else play lockdown defense and pitch in a few a game.

Maryland baseball announces fall signees, includes four top-200 players
I don't really follow baseball recruiting, but Bakich seems pretty psyched about it, so that's good.

Megan Frazer Wins Player of the Year
I assume you guys all know that Megan Frazer is a field hockey player. I feel like a Terp wins this thing every year. Anyway, congrats to Megan. - BG

Maryland basketball holds on to beat Mount St. Mary’s - The Washington Post
Nice roundup from Liz Clarke if you're looking for more coverage from the game the other night. Turgeon has this to say: "We’re not a bad team," Turgeon said, "but we’re not guarding. If you guard, the game isn’t close. We’ve got to figure out as a coaching staff how to teach these guys to guard better. . . . When things start to go bad, we all hang our heads." - BG

DOD: Andrew Harrison finishes in traffic at the rim
Earns BallIsLife's Dunk of the Day. For the recruitniks out there.

Bakich is the real deal. I put him in the same breath as Turgeon. He is going to rebuild the baseball team and as long as KA doesn’t shit on him he will stay here and possibly make this team a NCAA team, which would be huge. Just take a look at UVA, they were nothing and for the past 10 years have been sick.

Lacking a ton of names

Thing is, a) it takes a shitload of time, and b) I’m not concerned about having Roddy Peters and Dominic Woodson on there yet when we have no idea what direction their recruitment will take. Maybe we have no real interest in Woodson, maybe Peters doesn’t develop into a good enough prospect (he isn’t right now). Same with Daxter Miles, Ish Wainwright, etc. Most of the names on there were guys who we should be in with, guys with solid reputations, and, in the case of Artis, a personal favorite.

by Ben Broman on Dec 9, 2011 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

I have seen Artis play

I am with you on that kid, heard he has grown a bit, almost 6-7 now. Hope like hell he ends up here.

by rvandegrift on Dec 9, 2011 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

Ben, still no A Carr?

You are convinced that will never happen?

by rvandegrift on Dec 9, 2011 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't say 100% convinced, but I need to hear something else to make me believe it could happen

Carr is a huge gamble. Gigantic reward, fairly sizable risk as well considering we have guys like Jordan as potential Plan B types. Based on grades, size, Euro offers … I just don’t think it’s something Turgeon’s looking to do so early in his tenure. That could change, but I’m very doubtful.

As for Artis, I’ve only seen bits and pieces of his game, but I remember when everyone used to be calling him the next big thing. You put one of those guys in prep school, give them a year to develop their bodies and their skills, and they often end up shooting up the rankings, ala McGary. Mitch was a nobody a year ago, after all. Potential doesn’t go away.

by Ben Broman on Dec 9, 2011 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

What about Artis' grades?

We don;t want someone to come in, and quickly become academically ineligible, while holding a scholarship…..

by umcp96 on Dec 9, 2011 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

That's a concern, as it is for anyone who goes to prep school

But that’s why they go to prep school. Most kids who prep get eligible. For all we know, Artis prepped to get more offers.

Something going on with Carr

I don,t have any real inside info but something is shaken. I have liked Arits since i watched him play back in 09. Hope he is moving along as I hear because back then he was a Terp fan.

by rvandegrift on Dec 9, 2011 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

This is just not the case. Carr is not coming to Maryland. Look for him to go somewhere like Memphis or Cinci, if not to Europe, but Maryland just isn’t happening.

View his offer as Maryland showing respect to a great local talent, but neither the Terps nor AC expect a commitment.

by nmprisons on Dec 9, 2011 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

Is his your opinion?

Or do you have real info on the subject?

by rvandegrift on Dec 9, 2011 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

Well, both, I guess.

by nmprisons on Dec 9, 2011 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

I appreciate this approach. No sense going crazy on kids until you know it might actually happen.

This is why the BB program will be OK and the FB program is fucked

Coach Mark Turgeon declined to characterize it as a step backward for the young Terrapins, crediting Mount St. Mary’s with a tremendous effort and hot shooting hand. Instead of faulting his players, Turgeon said that he needed to do a better job teaching his team to guard.

Turgeon takes responsibility for the team’s performance and doesn’t throw the players under the bus.

by glowinthedark on Dec 9, 2011 9:51 AM EST reply actions

That is a completely false statement

Turgeon has called out individual players on several occasions already – more so than Edsall.

by Chad Ahalt on Dec 9, 2011 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

The more I read about Edsall

The more hope I lose and the sadder I become.

Then I imagine the Harrison boys here, forget that Anderson/Edsall/football exist, and I feel awesome. Like Barney Stinson.

rumors are flying the harrison twins are going to sign with maryland.

by fkterp on Dec 9, 2011 10:38 AM EST reply actions

????

What are you talking about, any sources of note?

by rvandegrift on Dec 9, 2011 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

Where are you reading/hearing these rumors?

I’m assuming its all speculation based on the Sun article from earlier in the week. And, if I remember correctly, that article suggested that they wouldn’t worry about recruiting during their season.

In other words, in an attempt to contain my excitement, I’m going to assume the rumors are based on things we’ve already read, and any commitment would wait until after the season.

All in an attempt to contain my excitement.

by bshock on Dec 9, 2011 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

not based on sun article. sun article said thy were waiting till later to commit. this chatter is something is real soon.

by fkterp on Dec 9, 2011 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

Awesome

Hope it didn’t look like I was saying that you were just speculating.

I just was trying not to get my hopes up—but now, well dammit they are up.

The day they commit to Maryland

I thought 3rd team, but 2nd team is awesome - Congrats to Joe

At one of the games this season, my friend and I were yet again looking at the All-American banners hanging. We were wondering when we’d be able to look at another one lifted up there. Joe just answered that question for us!

Yes, there's a chance

I don’t know that I’d call it likely, and remember that they’re very different players. But Sampson’s athleticism is uncommon.

by Ben Broman on Dec 9, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Let's see who McGary has around him at Michigan.

If Sampson is surrounded by the Twins, Shaq and Faust…he may appear to be a better player because other teams will have to focus on so many guys. If McGary has no help, he could be minimized as all teams would gameplan to stop him every night.

by 1 proud terp on Dec 9, 2011 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Haven't heard too much credible about us getting back in with him

It’s a name that’s sort of old-school and pre-Turge, and because he’s still available a lot of people are connecting the dots. Might happen, not sure that it will.

by Ben Broman on Dec 9, 2011 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

Regarding Joe Vellano...

…Edsall announced today that Joe Vellano will be converted to cornerback for the 2012 season.

by jellis77 on Dec 9, 2011 12:00 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Nice!

We could use him there. But I heard that he was being benched for next year because he sneazed during one of Edsalls meetings.

by LongTimeTerpFan on Dec 9, 2011 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Regarding the recruiting "big board."

Isn’t Auslander a scholarship player now? I thought he was given a scholarship. Is that for only one year?

Children should be seen, and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Dec 9, 2011 6:49 PM EST reply actions

Yes, one-year scholly

We had them open and decided to give it to him. If we need it, he loses it.
