Another Football Transfer: Experienced Tackle R.J. Dill Granted Release
And the Transfer Count raises to three. The newest casualty? Starter at right tackle R.J. Dill.
"I regret to inform the Terrapin faithful that my family and I have decided it would be best for me to move on with both my academic and athletic endeavors," Dill said in an e-mail. "Therefore I have requested and been granted a release from the Maryland football program. I leave here with great memories of the university and Terp Nation." [...]
"I wish the Maryland football program nothing but the best," Dill said. "Good luck to everyone involved with the program, from my brothers on the team to Coach Edsall, [offensive line coach Tom] Brattan and the coaching staff. I will always bleed red, white, black and gold and most of all, I will always be a Terp."
Another classy exit. Best of luck wherever you end up, R.J.
You'd think this hurts Maryland fairly significantly: they lose a senior lineman who's started for a solid two-and-a-half years, and they have no one with experience to plug into his place. His backup last year, Jake Wheeler, will be a redshirt sophomore next year with no starting experience. It also robs Maryland of some much-needed depth along the offensive line. Guys like Mike Madaras and Nick Brigham will likely be robbed of any chance to redshirt as a result.
I'm sticking with my over/under of 5.5, though most people would probably place it at 9.5 or so. We'll keep an eye out.

Seems logical
Didn’t Garcia go to the same high school as DJ? Norcross in Atlanta I believe.
I'm dumb about this stuff
In a typical year with no coach changes…how many transfers are typical?
Good question
I’m not sure of the answer, but I think the worry here is not just the # of transfers, but who those transfers are.
I think you’ll often see some guys transfer that lost position battles (for example, Titus Till), and that don’t expect to get much playing time. The worry is when you start seeing guys like Adams, Mackall, and Dill transfer—losing 3 projected starters as transfers is probably not a common thing.
Would be interested to see the numbers on this, however.
I was wondering this too
They aren’t particularly rare, but I never really kept track when Fridge was here. I’m thinking 2 or 3 would be average for a given year, but I’m really only guessing
I remember alot of Fridge’s QBs transferred in the mid 2000s, largely because they were not any good! In fact, there wasn’t one QB that Freidgen recruited that was better than average. (Hill and McBrien were both transfers).

As an uneducated guess, I'd say probably between 5-10
Thing is, Edsall had a bunch of players who had eligibility leave in last offseason, something like 11. So over the course of a year he’s already well above that number.
Y transfer as a Junior???
Unless you plan on going to FCS, why would u do that? I am assuming he is now a redshirt junior which only gives him 1 more year to play ball…Is he using the Greg Palus/Russell Wilson RULE?
He may've graduated, so yes, he may be eligible for the Wilson/Paulus/Masoli rule
If he isn’t, I think that speaks volumes about the atmosphere around the program.
I went to Duke.
And I always wondered how Paulus did that…what was the rule?

If you already have an undergraduate degree
And you want to get a master’s degree in a subject not offered at your current school, you can transfer to a school where it is offered without penalty. So if they want to get out, they just need to major in veterinary science or something like that.
Well-intentioned, but it basically just lets players get a free out after they graduate.
You just decided to ignore the fact that he just said he went to Duke...
Good explanation of the rule and all, but c’mon…
I find it terrible that thats what is required
People are always complaining that players only go to college to play their sport, yet they have to jump through hoops to go to grad school and play. Nobody wants to go to grad school where they attended undergrad, so its terrible that if they want to go to a different school, they have to pick some obscure grad major to do so

A Maryland fan at Duke?
Mindblownnnnn. Coolbeans.
No Huge Loss
Sure, it hurts whenever we lose a solid starter, but I’m not upset. I’m friends with a former O-lineman that recently graduated, he said Dill was a jerk that not many teammates were all that fond of. I say get rid of these people that aren’t well received in the locker room. Nevertheless, I still wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.
DOB Tweeted
that simply not ture. Said he was well liked in the locker room and no one is happy to see him go.

Bradford signs
3 year extension? Tell me it isn’t true!!!
by hipphipphorray on Dec 5, 2011 4:38 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Not true
He and 7 other assistants have 3 year contracts, follow Patrick Stevens on twitter (he’s been releasing the info). The contracts are laughably bad – paying assitants for radio/media appearances…..when the media isn’t allowed to talk to them. It’s getting to the point where KA is worse than Yow.
Kevin Anderson is an idiot. Can we just make Gary Williams AD?

No he didn't
Seems like he signed it before the season started but he’s making over $350k a year making his contract a sticky situation. We’re basically paying 8 assistants over $150k a year which is unprecedented and the only clause that allows their termination is to literally FIRE Randy Edsall. Holy shit, we’re fucked…

Where's the "only" ...?
It says:
The contracts also contain a clause that stipulates that "termination shall occur in the event and on the day that Randy Edsall’s service as the Head Coach of the Team shall end."I don’t see that as saying that termination shall only occur if Edsall is fired; I think it just says that if Edsall is fired then they are too.
Did I miss something else in the article?

Is Edsall going to comment on these transfers?
Three good players are transferring from Maryland; I take it Randy’s going to comment sooner or later? I guess this is a problem I have with him: I’m not saying that he has to comment ten seconds or an hour after these kids go public, but I would like to hear something from him. I’m sorry; maybe it’s just me.
It's not just you
Even if Edsall has nothing to say, just releasing a statement wishing the player luck and thanking him for his contributions to the team would be a classy gesture. Even if it’s complete bullshit, that sort of thing is just proper etiquette for a FBS head coach. Not commenting on player transfers just makes Edsall look at best, clueless to how handle the PR part of his job, and at worst, a petty man who thinks nothing of his former (and current) players. How hard is releasing a statement? There are plenty of Comm students who would be glad to intern for the team and write this stuff for him if he didn’t want to bother.
I've been ragging on him for the same reason
For every single player that transfers, he should issue a really basic statement saying “We’re sorry it didn’t work out at Maryland, and wish R.J. the best of luck in all his future endeavors.” It’s really not that hard, everyone does it.

sad but true
i already find myself counting the days until the next season starts, even though it will almost certainly be another heartbreaker
Lets gooo Maryland
You mean we have to trust Edsall and KA?!?!
Cant we just whipe everyone out, give LJ Sr. Randy Shannon and Mike Martz a shitload of money and let Edsall get back on the recruiting trail.
PSA some 4 star LB is planning on making an official visit with us
Dill
Was a walking mistake, whenever there was a false start or holding, or any penalty involving the o line, it was dill. In fact if he stayed, you could start a new drinking game for whenever dill’s number was called for a flag. Guy’s a quitter not a terp.
not on the edsall bandwagon..
Don’t want to mislead you by going against dill that i’m a huge edsall fan, but dill always made mistakes, in this case it looks like someone not taking responsibility fo rhis actions and blaming everyone else (hey sounds a little like our head coach too)
Walking mistake?
I’m not sure how to place Dill in this picture, but Maryland is ranked 8th best at 4.4 penalties/game. FSU averaged 7.8 per game as one of the worst.
Don’t have stats on Dill, but he didn’’t jump out at me as the biggest penalty grabber on the O-Line. A little comparison would help – penalties/minutes played perhaps?

Point here is that we are bleeding faster than transfusions can be given.
AND, we will be playing freshman on a depleted team next year.
Everyone gave me crap when I foretold our season. I’ve got news for you, better get used to it because we will see AT LEAST 2 more years like the one we just saw.
Fear the Turgle!
Yeah
Based on the rate significant contributors to the program are leaving, we will have another 1-3 win season next year. Maybe we’ll really pull it together and win 4 games in 2013.
Good to great. If we keep saying it, that makes it true, right?

We're going to suck for the duration of Edsall's tenure
And for a couple of years afterward. The sooner we all accept this, the better.
Won't Matter
Because we will have multiple national championships in basketball.

So why leave? 'Bleeding' a particular color seems to be very overrated....
“I wish the Maryland football program nothing but the best,” Dill said. “Good luck to everyone involved with the program, from my brothers on the team to Coach Edsall, [offensive line coach Tom] Brattan and the coaching staff. I will always bleed red, white, black and gold and most of all, I will always be a Terp.”
I'd assume because the displeasure Randy Edsall caused him overrides the pleasure he gets out of playing for Maryland
I bear him no ill-will. He seems to have really enjoyed CP and like UMd, but he didn’t sign up to play for Edasll. It’s not like he grew up a Maryland fan.
he must really hate Edsall
who leaves with only one year of eligibility remaining, and isn’t a surefire starter if he goes to any other top 30-40 school?
Further
IMO this really says something about Edsall, because how do you convince a redshirt senior that it is so bad to play under you that he’d rather transfer for his last season of football rather than stay one more year at the school he’s been at for four years. It isn’t the quality of player leaving that concerns me, because Dill is average, it is the fact that he only has one year of eligibility remaining that is the most concerning. He must be doing some damn good convincing to make him leave.
maybe Dill will just give up playing football and become a state trooper
