How would you count Vellano?
Since we are keeping count of the guys who leave the program, if Vellano jumps to the pros - an entirely possible event - would that count against RE in your mind?
My thoughts - No. Chris Wilcox SHOULD have gone when he was a sure lottery pick, same with DHB, Franchise, Joe Smith and a host of other MD greats (no, not JW). If he feels his draft status is high enough to warrant it, and pro scouts will not ignore his sheer number of tackles, I don't think it should count against RE.

Do you like this story?

He wont leave early. I think he wants to become an all american(not 2nd team)
I just feel like he knows he can do it, and since his dad did it id imagine it would be important for him
all-american vs. potentially harming his draft status?
He had two case studies right in front of him; Torrey Smith and Kenny Tate. The thought of going pro has to be running through his mind. Yes, he is clearly one of RE’s (and RF’s for that matter) faves, but looking ahead at next season at team (vs. personal) success has to be a bit disheartening to him. It may be a situation he wants out of.
I agree with you that he has the potential to be an all-american, but the first teamers pretty much all are from winning programs. Being the best in the country, but from a losing ACC program is a harder hand to win 1st team honor from than being the best DT from the SEC or B10/12/8/whatever.
I don’t know that another monster season further improves his draft status – he had a huge year this season and the numbers he put up are hard to replicate,
Nah, wouldn't hold it against Edsall.
That doesn’t mean I think it’s going to happen. Or, that if it did, Edsall wouldn’t play any role in his decision. But I don’t think it’s ever fair to hold a coach accountable for a player choosing to move up to the next level.
I've sen a few folks try to lump Torrey Smith in with the defections
And I think he technically is one of the 12 that left since the Military Bowl. If we are counting Torrey (who graduated but had eligibility and I thought was certain to go in the first round) as part of the RE defections, we should probably remove him from the list.
Not that 18 defections is much better than 19.
Did anyone make a Ralph list...
of defections? Wondering how many players a year left under Ralph.
Though studies have been done, an understanding of the younger generation has been elusive. This is what we do know:
They like Comedy Central.
They like sports.
They like beer.
In fact, they like to be entertained, period.
They have never produced anything.
They have never paid income taxes.
They have always been dependent on others for their existence...and yet...
They somehow think they know everything.
While more study is recommended, the outlook looks very bleak that an understanding of this generation will be arrived at any time in the near future.

So far this year?
Are you sure you’re not combining this and last year? Because I think you are. In fact, I KNOW you are.
:-)

Sorry, I was defining this year as 2011.
Or, since Edsall has taken over. Did you have a better definition?
Well...
That’s pretty technical isn’t it? LOL
How about this and last season? Players left after last season, and after this season? Which both happened to be in 2011?

If you jump and you're picked in the 4th - 7th round, you should count
Only leave early if you’re going to be picked in the first three rounds. It should really be the first two rounds, but I’m being kind.
From what I’ve seen Vellano would be picked in the 5th or 6th round, so I’m not sure how much sense it makes to jump. Torrey Smith was a first round draft pick (and was projected in the 2nd round at worst) so it made sense for him to jump.
Is Gary Crowton fired yet?
Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?
And props to Joe for being a 2nd team AP All-American
If he stays may we actually have a preseason first team AA? knock on wood Dare I say it?
