(Recruits) The real time to panic is...

When currently committed recruits start DECOMMITTING.

I'm not an Edsall fluffer, I'm giving him one more year but I have less faith things will improve a lot day by day. And losing David Mackall and DJ Adams is definitely not a positive. But, they were Fridge guys, who clashed with the coach (so you can't expect them to say positive things as they leave, which made DJ's departure so classy), and made the most that was best for them. Carry on my wayward son(s), that was the right move for them.

The real time to hit the panic button is if a kid like Mike Madaras ## decommits. But so far, the fact of the matter is we are (slowly, but I guess surely) adding kids and talent to the team. Kids that were recruited by Edsall and his staff, know his style, seemingly want to play for the man.

I'm also not being a Polyanna here either. There's a lot to be unhappy with, I think there are about 1400 other posts with thousands of comments on the site that make all those things clear. And losing Danny O'Brien would stink, but as I think Ben B has correctly pointed out elsewhere it won't be THAT big of a loss. He's not an ideal fit for this system, he had a bad year, etc. Plus, I think the kid is better off in another system where his strengths will be better suited and he'll have some sort of a shot (however small) at the NFL.

## Good news is Madaras just got his Under/Armour All-American jersey as reported by Matt Bracken.

Deshawn Dowdy

Great article from the sun on Dowdy:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/recruiting-blog/bal-maryland-football-recruiting-deshawn-dowdy-commits-to-the-terps-20111129,0,3901317.story

He is projected as a OLB/DE apparently. They said he was offered either offense or defense, which makes me think he could switch to TE if it isn’t working out. He has the height to play DE, just needs to hit the weights.

I was going to do a post on the Madaras article and this article but you beat me to one so i’ll just throw it in here.

When it comes to DOB

I guess yall have talked about him in another post that I missed, but I don’t think its true he doesn’t fit in this system. In fact I think he can be a great fit. A lot of his struggles had to do with being a completely new system for him as well as a lack of experienced and talented receivers around him. A lot of his success last year came from Torrey Smith as well as having his redshirt year to learn the system in my opinion, not that he is only a pro style/ West coast QB. And I think the reason CJ had more success because he had the pure athleticism to create for himself at times whereas DOB has to rely on others.

I compare our QB situation to Kansas’s from a few years ago. They had Kerry Meier as their athletic spread QB and Tod Reesing as the passing QB. They transitioned Meier into a receiver (who is currently in the NFL) and Reesing led them to I believe an Orange Bowl appearance. I think our team and situation is A LOT like that of Kansas a few years back. They were mediocre at best for a long time. But when Mangino got some players in there and a QB to lead them, they beat VT in the Orange Bowl. The good part for us is that if DOB stays, I don’t think we have to wait for our Reesing to come along, it will just take the time for him to be more comfortable with our system. Which as bad as this past year was you can at least point to the fact that we had young guys learning on the fly which hopefully should only make us better.

Hopefully all of that made sense because I typed it all on my phone. But there is still hope for the future with a tweak here and there, there is a precedent for it.

Also

As much as our situation compares to Kansas from 2007, I think we are in a better position to sustain it long term considering we are in a much better location to recruit than Kansas has ever been. If we start winning some games and get another good recruiter or two in here, I really really like our short and long term recruiting picture.

I agree

If we win, and if we recruit well, I will be confident in our recruiting…

by bshock on Dec 1, 2011 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

Okay but...

I dont disagree with what you said, but my question is – why do we think the receivers will be any better next year??

These guys we had this year had a horrible problem holding onto the ball – yet they still started! Its not like we have a recruiting class filled with 5 star recruits like sammy watkins that will be able to start on day 1, so who currently on the staff at the WR position is going to be a homerun hitter for us next year – to make Danny O the beast he could be?

Serious question, not trying to troll.

No I'm with you

The skepticism is warranted. But I think what we saw a lot this year was inexperience. I think Dorsey looked great most of the time, so I don’t think your comment was about him obviously. As did Furstenburg when they got him involved.

As for the rest of the guys, it is kind of wishful thinking. But I don’t think there isn’t precedent for it, our freshman receivers are talented guys. Coxson looked good at time and was a Florida transfer. Leak has talent, just didn’t look overly confident, which will come with experience. And Nigel King was ineligible I believe this season, but is a guy that was being recruited by LSU, UNC, etc. Now I know that who you were recruited by guarantees you less than nothing, but those are schools that don’t recruit you unless they see something special there.

I think a good amount of our offensive struggles had a lot to do with the youth as well as the dramatic scheme change. I don’t think it’s too much to expect talented guys to make natural progression with experience.

I sure...

…hope your right.

IMHO, WRs were the biggest dissapoitment of the year. I put the team falling apart mostly on their shoulders this past year. The amount of drops they had just KILLED our passing game – we could have had andrew luck or matt barkeley out there – wouldn’t have mattered. When you can’t pass, it makes it really hard to run as well – obviuosly because no one has to respect the option.

And I dont think a new scheme is a great excuse for our WR. I dont care what scheme your running if the ball hits your fingers or chest – you catch it. I can figure the underclassmen because I dont think that was scheme – more experience issues there… but the upperclassmen just totally dissapointed (Yes, as you mentioned dorsey had some good plays – but he had his fair of drops iirc – including a killer that would have won us the clemson game).

Anyway, I want to believe this staff will correct the butterfingers – i just really hope they do — or it wont matter if DOB stays or goes really.

by vaterp9 on Dec 1, 2011 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

I agree the scheme may not matter as much for the WR's

But experience definitely does in my opinion. I know you say if it hits you in the hands, you catch it, which I agree with. But it does take time to adjust the speed of the game, worrying about exactly where you are on the field, who is about to come and knock you out, thinking too far ahead of what to do after the catch, etc. As they get experience and the game slows down, these things should fall into place and allow their natural talent to take over… hopefully.

Assuming DOB stays,

and considering Meggett is gone; is Pickett the answer as the primary RB, or will Edsall put (at least try) CJ into the backfield, and groom a back-up for DOB at QB?

by curterp on Dec 1, 2011 10:12 AM EST reply actions

CJ Brown is and will remain a QB

He will never ever become a RB at MD, write it down, get a tattoo if you want. That’s a stone cold lead pipe lock.

Crowton’s system is IDEAL for a QB like Brown. Zone reads, option runs. We’ll see more QBs at MD like Brown and DOB (like the incoming QB we have who ran a zone read system in HS).

by ckstevenson on Dec 1, 2011 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

If that's the case

Then why did they recruit two QB’s who seem to be more in the DOB mold rather than the CJ mold? And I don’t think Crowton’s offenses at BYU and all that were as much spread option as they are just pure spread. Not discounting you, just wondering on your thoughts.

Caleb Rowe?

He comes from a spread system.

“Cooper’s offensive system should serve as good preparation for Rowe at Maryland. The Tigers run a spread, which this year featured a 1,000-yard rusher, but also saw Rowe pass about 60 percent of the time. From what Cooper has seen of the Terps this year, Rowe appears to be a good fit for Gary Crowton’s offense.’”

I don’t know the name of the other kid.

Reply threw up

It should have had the season recap quote on Rowe from the BaSu Recruiting Report:

That only supports my claim

The 1000 yard rusher wasn’t Rowe, it was his RB. Them saying that his HS offense is like Crowtons offense leads you to believe that Crowtons offense is more passing oriented with running mixed in. Ala more for DOB than CJ.

Perry Hills i think is his name

He’s a pretty good QB for a top ranked team nationally. we also got his top TE

Regarding Pickett

THAT’s why the rift between Edsall and Adams, and the subsequent transfer hurts so much.

Pickett, to me, isn’t an every down back. He’s not a power runner, he won’t move the pile on 3rd down. As I see it, he and Adams would have made for a fantastic combo in the backfield.

I’m not knowledgable enough on our incoming recruiting class to say what RBs are in it. Was there anyone else on the team this year that features as a RB?

by ckstevenson on Dec 1, 2011 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

Well there is

Jeremiah Wilson who did see a bit of action this year. There are obviously some other guys listed as RBs on the roster, but don’t really see any emerging (then again who knows with Edsall). I guess theoretically Brandon Ross could get some talk, but he was a two-star and not sure what really went on with him as far as getting experience this year. As for our recruiting class, we have Goins and Joe Riddle. Goins projects more as a FB, while Riddle is a low-ranked local prospect from Linganore. That said he is said to be a very hard-worker, hard-runner and probably and Edsall kind of guy. I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see him get some opportunities at some point.

by nkeninitz on Dec 1, 2011 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

Both would fit well with Pickett I think

Guys who can run between the Tackles. Strong North/south guys.

You're kidding right?

So the Fridge can stay in this program for 10 years with his best year in his first year, then unable to do anything the last 5 years or so bringing in one good recruiting class but no thats ok. Not sure if you guys remember but he Fridge also went 2-10 in his ninth year. That’s perfectly acceptable though. But bring in a coach who went to a BCS game the year before and he goes 2-10 the year in his first year after installing a new patient and being plagued by injuries on both sides of the ball and you want him gone. Please explain that to me. Sorry he took Fridges garbage and was brutally honest with us.

New system not patient

by Ashmed21 on Dec 1, 2011 10:31 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Was this even on the right thread?

Who are you responding to?

The original post was about not freaking out over transfers—we’d have cause for concern if someone like Madaras decommitted.

The replies have been generally neutral—what if DOB leaves? Is DOB a fit for the Edsall/Crowton offense? Will he have a better year next year if he stays? Random info on Dowdy.

No one really crushed Edsall in this post—especially when compared to the million other posts ripping him a new one.

I would point out that your argument sucks because: (1) Edsall vs. Fridge is a false dilemma, the real comparison should be Edsall vs. Anyone else we could have hired; (2) Fridge won at least 8 games 3 times in his last 5 years (the same amount Edsall did in his magical run to the BCS); and (3) Win/loss records only tell part of the story—the other part is the fantastic combination of blowouts, blown leads, lack of motivation, personnel decisions, PR blunders, and game management issues.

But I won’t point all that out, because I want to stay on topic. And that topic is: your post is off-topic.

by bshock on Dec 1, 2011 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

hey bshock

please don’t conveniently forget losses to Middle Tenn State (twice) Nothern Illinois, and as far as recruiting – don’t forget we chose Morgan Green over Steve Slaton.

Just sayin’

by Mighty MD on Dec 1, 2011 11:21 AM EST reply actions

Huh?

I refer you to point #1 made in my post above. I was in 100% agreement with the decision to replace Fridge. Just not with Edsall. Those aren’t inconsistent thoughts.

How your point has any relevance to my prior comment is a mystery to me.

Shawn Petty article from the Baltimore Sun

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/recruiting-blog/bal-terps-football-recruiting-season-recap-shawn-petty-20111130,0,5538437.story

The sun is doing some work this week on write-ups for the MD recruits. The most interesting take out of this article is the reference to Issiah Ross and Meggett both talking to Petty and telling him great things about the program even though they went 2-10. At least some current players are still all in on things.

Otherwise, this kid has the size to play LB…hopefully it translates to the field.

by djcarv2005 on Dec 1, 2011 12:13 PM EST reply actions

Evidently the time to panic...

isn’t going to come.

There is a thread dedicated to Madaras talking up the Terps. And other reports are that recruits are excited to come here and play for Edsall.

It really is a matter of getting the kinds of kids who are compatible with the coaching staff. And I am willing to trust that Edsall and crew are getting the kinds of players that are just that.

Children should be seen, and not heard.

ga recruits

Some notes for concerned fans. GA all state team annouced today; Brigham named 1st team all state 4A classification and the one kid not even rated by the ’all knowing" scouting services Alvin Hill named 1st team all state 5A classification as DB. Think maybe Hill might have some decent skill sets at 5-11 190 with 4.4 speed?
