Danny O'Brien

I was thinking about this earlier. How good exactly is Danny? Obviously this season has been horrible for him, but I wouldn't peg that on his skills, more so the system he is in.

So do we see Danny transferring? Is he good enough to play in the NFL to the point where he feels the need to really leave and start over. I remember reading that he graduates this spring, so does that make him eligible for the Russel Wilson rule? If he is graduating, I guess that rule technically is applicable to him, but he is only a red shirt sophomore, so I don't really know the deal with that.

Anyway, I guess the move to Vanderbilt to get back with Franklin would make sense. They have a young program there who was not all that bad this year, and it would give a chance for Danny to also go against the best defenses in the country. I have heard a rumor from a former walk-on that he may be considering Stanford. I couldn't tell you how reliable that info is, just is what I was told.

What are your thoughts? Is Danny NFL caliber? Does transferring really benefit him? Or would it be a mistake? Can Edsall find a way to utilize the talent that is Danny O'brien? I guess we'll all find out soon, but it would be a damn shame to see the kid we had so much hype around transfer after a sophomore season where he was benched.

After this season,

no way Danny gets drafted. After this season (so far), no way he’s a definite part of Edsall’s plans for next season. That being said, a couple big games to end the year, and his future at UMD could dramatically change.

Its not Edsalls call

I am sure he wants DOB around. Its whether or not he fits into Crowtons system. Transferring schools is just transferring problems

i dont know i just think if he gets put in the right system, he could actually be a special player

He’s very smart and has a strong arm. I dont think he is remotely nfl caliber at this point. I just think given the right system, he could do something special. If he goes to a better team and puts up numbers similar to last year, I think he would turn some heads

NFL - Really?

Lets be real. Danny has a slightly above average arm and above average smarts but his size and speed are definitely below average. Without Torrey Smith inflating his stats he is no an elite QB.

he was a freshman when we've seen him play in a better system

a freshman. and if the only reason he was good is because he had good WR’s… that would make him perfect for the NFL, not sure what your point is

Transfer rumor

Hear a rumor that Fridge and Spurrier are friends. Spurrier does not like the QB situation, spoke with Fridge and fridge recommended DOB.

DOB in Spurrier's offense...

I’d be in Columbia every Saturday for the remainder of his career.

Tough life decision.

Danny completed a marketing internship with UA andhas the opportunity to get an MBA from one of the top business schools in the nation.
If he wants to transfer and play next season he must find another grad program that UMd doesn’t offer, which may be worthwhile for a sure fire NFL QB. But is DOB that? Does he throw away the educational and professional opportunity that has presented itself in order to be in the best offensive system?
It’s a tough choice to make.

I think we need to see much more to know anything definitively

First of all, does Edsall stick with him this year, or does he bounce him around with CJ? Because if he doesn’t stick with him, for the life of me I don’t know why Danny would stick around. Vandy isn’t an option because Jordan Rodgers is the guy there for now, but Stanford, SC, Wiscy, and probably any other number of schools (Michigan State, Ok. State, Arizona, Cincinnati, shit maybe even LSU) would love to have him.

But I think it’s too early to call Danny an NFL-er or not until we see some more of him. He’s had a great year, and he’s had a terrible year. It’s pretty tough to tell which was the fluke – one year he had a great WR, which might’ve inflated his numbers; the other, he was transitioning into a new system and had mediocre WRs. He’s a good QB for sure, but I have some questions about his confidence and consistency after seeing what happened this year.

DOB has definitely made some poor throws and decisions this year

but it also seems like the receivers have dropped a crap ton of balls at the worst times in games. I hope he stays and figures out how to succeed in Crowtons system. He’s a stand up guy who has lost his confidence. Everybody loves a good comeback story.

+1000

The WRs have dropped SO MANY passes this season.

by djcarv2005 on Nov 9, 2011 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

Does anyone realize that DOB would be completing nearly 70% of his passes...

if the receivers caught 50% of drops that hit them in the numbers??? No one has mentioned the residual effects of this…….Consider the momentum that is ruined when a WR drops a clutch pass on 3rd down….or drops a pass in the end zone(how many times has that happened this year?)

Yeah DOB has made some poor decisions, but he has also kept the team in games and clearly never gives up.

Imagine the confidence he’d have going into next year knowing that the returning receiving corp would actually catch the ball more often than not!?

Also....Torrey Smith was a great combo with DOB...

but everyone makes it sound like DOB would’ve been shit if Torrey wasn’t there….Keep in mind that he is the one who threw the deep balls in the spots where only Torrey could catch them and do his thing.
