Since there seemed to be a good response to the comparison of the two new Terps HC in Football and Basketball. I think everyone can take away that the fanbase fully believes Turgeon is going to be successful as a coach and in all facets of coaching, namely recruiting. I fully agree, granted if Turgeon goes 7-23 this years, the fanbase will be up in arms, though with an extremely depleted roster, I will not be one of them.
So, with our football program truthfully looking more and more like a clash between bitter enemies (Edsall vs. Ralph's players) I think 2012 will be an extremely important year. Another 4 or less win season will solidify the doubters, move many people on the fence over to the hater side and really show that maybe Edsall is not the guy for this job. I understand that Maryland is currently in no position to buyout his contract anytime before most likely his fifth season, unless Kevin Plank decides he would rather sacrifice a couple million for the betterment of the Terp Nation. If Edsall has a couple more lack luster years, I can't see Maryland landing any top recruits and most local recruits worth anything will look elsewhere unless they like his authoritative approach and accountability policies.
Trust me after hearing all about the problems off the field and the many issues in the classroom, Ralph had no control or accountability with his players. I truly believe that is why the last couple of years of the Friedgen Era had so many up's and downs. With success everyone is working harder, but when failure creeps in then your true colors start showing. Just look at this year with essentially Ralph's players, they start off hot, but then start losing and players start getting suspended, the players go to the media about there dislike of Edsall and here we are with a disappointing season that can't be over soon enough. I am not giving Edsall an excuse, but my God apparently he may have an argument. I think Edsall will be improving each year. The question is whether he will get to the 10+ win seasons that KA was suppose to find a coach that can accomplish that goal.
Some coaches have an easier transistion from location to location. Take Urban Meyer for one. Meyer went from Bowling Green which he had success for two years, then to Utah where he inherited Alex Smith and went 22-2 then bolted to Florida. Meyer took over for Ron Zook who had left with such a talented team and with a player named Tim Tebow already locked up to play for the Gators. He then goes 57-10 in his first five years, with two Natty's. Then comes his first year without Tebow and he goes a modest 8-5 ranked outside of the top 25 for the first time in his career. Has some medical issues and bolts. I see someone who knew that he couldnt repeat the success that he accomplished with another coaches players and left. Sounds familiar...Friedgen anyone. Now Meyer will most likely take over a pretty loaded Ohio State team next year and he will be there for a couple until the kool-aid runs dry.
Edsall may not be the worlds best with words and know when to say and not say somethings, but I think he is a much needed presence in a program that has lacked discipline and control for many years. Remember Edsall and the Terps are currently on sanctions from the NCAA because of our previous coach. I hope this year was a fluke and with the appropriate amount of time and injuries not being as severe next year, the Terps bounce back.
I just ask the fanbase to be EDUCATED about Edsall and his tenure as the HC of Maryland Football. Let him do what he does and why KA thought he was the right fit to restore character and success to College Park. If we support the team it will only help with getting better recruits and encouraging the current players to play harder when everyone is cheering for them and not calling for the coach to be fired every day. Remember even with Ohio State losing last year, having their most valuable players suspended or left the fanbase stood by them all. Penn State is in the middle of a embarrassing scandal that involves the entire University from top to bottom and is much worse then NCAA violations, but the fanbase is up there supporting. The Terps have a bad year and players are not who we thought they are with our coach trying to instill a forgotten mentality in this day of responsibility and accountability, our fanbase flips out and thinks he needs to be gone. See what I'm getting at, give him time and support. COME ON MANNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!
