First off don't think this is going to be an apples to apples argument or comparison. I thought it would be in interesting topic to discuss comparing the two coaches that Maryland has manning their largest revenue sports (yes, these two sports are suppose to make the school money). Since both are replacing iconic coaches this should be a nice debate.
Let's start off with who they are replacing. Edsall is replacing Ralph Friedgen and Turge is replacing Gary Williams. This is hardly a comparison or competition comparing Ralph to Gary. Turgeon obviously has the larger shoes to fill, simply Gary won a Natty and had much more success over a longer term. Though Edsall has to replace the coach that made football relevant again in College Park, even though the last couple of years were a roller coaster. So Turgeon has the higher expectations and pressure from the fanbase.
The teams each coach inherited. This may be the most debated topic, so lets not waste any time. Turgeon is taking over a team that missed out on the postseason and only has 7 scholarship players and the majority of those seven are underclassmen. Also the team lost their best player to the Draft aka Poland. This is not the ideal situation for Turge and I think due to the lack of scholarship players Turge should get a free pass this year. Edsall on the other hand had a 9-4, victorious bowl team with the Rookie of the Year returning. The team had high expectations since finishing in the top 25 (#23) in the polls last year. Edsall stands at 2-9 and most likely will finish 2-10 in his first season. The team got killed by injuries and the casualty of turnover from a coaching change. I think both coaches need to given the first year off from judgement for current rosters. Football failed this year and Basketball seems to be in major trouble. Recruiting will be key for both programs.
Now the most exciting part of this comparison, RECRUITING. Edsall has a much larger roster to fill out and football is more of a crap shoot when it comes to rankings. There is a much greater chance of finding the under the radar guys since high school football competition level is so vastly different state to state. Edsall has a mediocre class at best, but if he gets these guys to play for him, then I am all in, but definitely needs some major recruits. Turgeon with his team of assistants have already put together the #17 team in the 2012 class. I think basketball given two years will be a top 10 recruiting class under Turgeon. Basketball has a lesser margin of error when it comes to the rankings. Either way Turgeon is by far and away miles ahead of Edsall and with this class coming in could allow the 2012 Terps bball team to be a NCAA caliber team.
Short term and long term expectations and success. Both Turge and Edsall have voiced their opinion and disgust on how hard the first year will be. Turge obviously has put himself in the tougher short term rebuilding situation with the lack of players, but with recruiting success already (and the ability to coach see his past if you need further proof of that) Terps Bball is well on there way to the glory days of NCAA appearances and hopefully title games. Edsall has already established himself as public enemy number one, with his bashing of former coach Friedgen, his public comments about his current players and his lack of success on the recruiting trail. I personal like his militaristic values and think it will pay off, but I think he failed in transistioning his current roster. Either way with the financial woes of the Athletic Dept, we will see if he is successful here for a minimum of 5 years. Short term, both teams are going to struggle and Bball long term will be a top 20 ream with postseason written all over them, Football is still a question mark.
Excitement level moving forward??? Edsall could not have came out any hotter then the Labor Day victory at home wearing the Pride Uniforms with all of it on National TV. The first taste of Turgeon bball was one of the worst shooting displays I have ever witnessed vs. Alabama in an absolute ass kicking. Though the younger players on the bball team seem to have a higher upside. I am excited for both teams. I have a feeling that Turgeon once given a full roster will excel and bringing in top high school talent could take us to places we have seen before, but now on a more regular basis. Football seems to be more of a mystery since there seems to be coaching changes in the near future as in Coordnators and there are several recruits still involved with MD that could make a major impact immediately.
I hope this brings up some conversation on where the Maryland fan base is with both coaches and to see what your expectations are on both of them.
