I know many people are upset that Maryland has to cut programs in order to work through a financially difficult time for the athletic department. Maryland currently has 25 varsity sports, which puts them with the third most programs in the ACC. Here is a list of total number of varsity sports per school:
Boston College: 29 teams
UNC: 26 teams
Maryland: 25 teams, proposed 19 teams
NC State: 23 teams
UVA: 23 teams
Duke: 20 teams
Clemson: 18 teams
FSU: 18 teams
VT: 16 teams
Wake Forest: 16 teams
GT: 15 teams
Miami: 15 teams
So even with the proposed cuts of six teams, Maryland would still rank 6th in the ACC for total varsity sports offered. I think this has been something that should have been implemented a long time ago. No offense to any student athlete, but unless your a main sport in this culture and your losing money, Maryland doesnt need to be offering it as a varsity sport. This will free up a lot of money to help budget the books. Hopefully the basketball team and the varsity Edsall team...he does own the right to the football program, get their stuff together and this will be forgotten.
Big game tomorrow, Turge & Co. BEAT THE TIDE....ROLL TERPS!
