First and foremost, every Maryland heart goes out to the victims of the horrific crimes that are being reported in the news coming out of Penn State University.  These crimes evidently were committed on the campus of Penn State, and it's affilliate campusses.   The fact that these crimes went on for decades, and did not see the light of day until now boggels the mind, and no doubt it's cover up will rival in horror the actual crimes themselves. 

Now that these crimes are being investigated by not only Pennsylvania criminal investigative agencies, but also Federal criminal investigative arms as well, it appears the first steps in the healing process have begun.  Throw in the NCAA investigations that are sure to take place, and we will see a public investigation like no other in the history of college football.  So, I have no doubt that the web of crime, which evidently goes deep into the Penn State family, will be exposed, and justice will be served. 

There will be no doubt servere penalties, for not only the crimes themselves, but also the negligence and culpability of those in postions of responsiblility at PSU.  People will go to jail.  Civil suits will ensue.  Massive amounts of money will be paid out in an attempt to assuage both anger and pain.  Perhaps, even the NCAA will give the death penalty to Penn State football.  And no doubt the reputation of Penn State University will be brought to the lowest levels immaginable.

We here at the University of Maryland offer solace and a refuge to the victims, and to those who did not know such horrors were taking place.  We offer no solace or refuge to the perpetrators of these criminal acts, or to those who turned their backs as they took place, and hope the harshest possible treatment will be given to them, and to the system (the Penn State football program and upward) that allowed such criminal activity to thrive. 

We at Maryland offer something else as well:

Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall is a man of inpeccable character, and he is in the initial processes of building a program at Maryland that will stand apart from all others in regard to not only accountability for moral and ethichal standards, but in terms of moral discipline.  He is in a continous search for young men of high character and moral fortitude, who want a good education and who want to help create a successful football team and program.  As a loyal and proud Terp, I invite all involved to consider Maryland when you consider your choices for a (new) home.  Parents of recruits, recruits, present Penn State players and present Penn State assistant coaches of high character are welcome to consider Maryland as a place where they can develope not only as players (or coaches) but as responsible citizens.  Because only with responsible citizens, will we be able to eliminate the likes of Jerry Sandusky, and those at Penn State who enabled his predation.
