There are quite a few big-time local football recruits Maryland is in the running for, and the prospect of landing one of them is one of the few things keeping fan attitude above water right now. There may be none bigger than Good Counsel's Stefon Diggs, an electrifying wide receiver out of Good Counsel. (Not literally, of course; Eddie Goldman is almost certainly bigger, and may actually be figuratively bigger as well.)
We have both good news and bad news on that front. The good news? Maryland made his most recent list cut, which limited the schools he's considering to 11. The bad news? Well...
Really, that shouldn't be a surprise - losing is rarely a bonus for recruits, particularly when the loss comes to a MAC team that then got blown away at home by Toledo. But in case you had any doubt that the loss hurt Maryland's recruiting momentum ... well, you probably shouldn't anymore.
The competition for Diggs is stiff, and includes Auburn, Florida, Michigan, and South Carolina, among others. Landing Diggs would be a huge upset for Maryland, but it's been that way for months now, and they're still here. Let's see if they can down to 5 or 7 or whatever his next cut is. Baby steps.
