Is the Clearinghouse Critical?

There hasn't been much said about the pending decision by the NCAA Student Clearinghouse, which will determine the eligibility of Alex Len for the 2011-12 basketball season. Most of the focus has been on the 2012 recruiting class, and rightly so, I guess.

If Len is cleared to play this season, by the time Cleare, Layman and Allen - and whoever else the Terps pick up - arrive in College Park, Len will have had roughly 30 NCAA games under his belt. Considering the number of freshman we'll be relying on in 2012, how important will it be for the Terps to have an experienced big in the lineup? True, we'll have Pankey, Padgett and Parker (assuming none of them transfer), but let's face it, Len is more likely to be the focal point if he plays this year, and will likely see more playing time than the 3 Ps.

Conversely, if the clearinghouse denies his eligibility for the year, we'll have Cleare, Len and Layman (and whoever else) playing their first games at the same time next season.

How much effect will the clearinghouse decision have on the success of the 2012 class? And, does anyone know, if the clearinghouse delays Len's eligibility, is there an appeals process?
