Maryland Minute - 10.25.11 - Could Maryland Play Two Quarterbacks on Saturday?
With the quarterback battle for Maryland continuing, there is now speculation that both signal callers could see playing time on Saturday against BC. Sadly, I don't think we'll see both in at the same time, like many of us want, but rather a series with O'Brien and then a series with Brown. I guess we'll find out on Saturday...
Two passing Terps could be better than one
"We might play both on Saturday, I don’t know. We’ll see how the week goes. We could play one or both," Edsall mused during his weekly press conference.
I really wish "we might play both" meant at the same time, but I doubt it. As Ben B. suggested, put Brown in as a WR/RB option. Have both in the backfield. On some plays, hike it directly to Brown for a designed run. Other plays, hike it to DOB, who could option it to Brown, throw down field, or handoff to someone else. Why not utilize the skill sets of both QBs? They're not competing skills; they complement each other.

Great piece by Patrick Stevens on A.J. Francis. Definitely worth a read. And if you don't follow Francis on twitter, you need to.

Terps in the NFL
Want to know which former Terps are in the NFL? Here's a rundown on all 28 of them. Yes, 28. I feel we should have many more wins over the last five years for a school that has 28 NFL players right now...

I like the idea of having them both on the field at the same time...
… but do we then incur a liability in blocking? I don’t know how much experience CJB has blocking like a RB or WR, as would be necessary for DOB to throw from the pocket. Likewise, could DOB pitch the option to CJB and then throw a block to spring him free? They might be able to pull it off occasionally, but I don’t know that it would be a “permanent” solution.
With that being said, it would be an exciting possibility. Too bad these coaches would never step that far outside of the box.
Two QBs in certain situations
would keep the defense guessing. Not sure that should be unveiled vs. BC though.
28 Terps in NFL tells me how bad Friedgen really was...
…talent was there, wins were not = poor coaching
So how bad is a coach who takes NFL level talent and makes it insignificant?
Good to Great? Not on the draft board.
Didn't Merriman, edmunds and heyward-bey
Leave early. Leaves a hole the following year. Just think if we had Torrey this year. It might of meant a win or two

Indicates a really strange coaching profile:
Recruiter: often disappointing
Game coach: often disappointing
NFL talent producer: 10th best in the country!
How does this happen?
Good teaching? Great practices? Self-motivated players?
Recruiter: often disappointing???
Well if you’re going off the # of star a kid gets as a HS player maybe, but I think you have to give Ralph credit for bringing in kids with the athletic ability to develop into NFL players. As the above mentioned, the S&C coach helps, but he had to have something to work with.
Now what is a bit scary- somebody pull up the # of players Edsall put into the NFL at UCONN over the past 7-8 yrs- cut him a break on the first few yrs after the transition when he was there- the # isnt close to what Ralph put in the league
im so against a two qb system
it NEVEr works. if the coaches truly think CJ puts us in a better position to win, play him. if not, play DOB. i cant thing of any successful team with a two qb system. dont say PSU bc they are winning on anything but their offense. we dont have the D they do
I think what makes Brown so dangerous is the option to throw as the dropback qb (keeping the coverage guys back until he takes off running). As a rb, all 11 converge immediately as soon as your handed the rock.

Never?
2006 Florida Gators – National Champs
Not remotely analogous, but I wouldn’t say “never.”
Supposed to be a response to terps3030
Damn, I hate when I do that.
that wasnt really two QB
chris leak was the quarterback and tebow came in in very few situations (goal line, etc). its one thing if you have situational changes, but splitting the time equally, or close to equally, is never good
According to edsal
if he come back next year Tate’s staying at linebacker.
Edsall is out to ruin Tates career

Lesean is the "Real Slim Shady"
his wording
“If senior Kenny Tate receives a medical hardship to return to the Maryland football team in
2012, he will remain at linebacker for the second consecutive season, Coach Randy Edsall said Tuesday.”
It really does boggle the mind
How Edsall came into the program and said:
1. We are going to implement a new system on offense. Not what Maryland ran. Not what Connecticut ran. Let’s hire that guy Crowton and put in the spread. Who cares if it neutralizes the primary talents of our best offensive player (who happens to play the most important position on offense)?
2. We are going to move our best defensive player—arguably the best safety in the country—to linebacker. Further, we are going to leave him there for 4 or 5 games until he gets hurt, even after it is apparent to 99% of the fanbase that the experiment hasn’t worked. NOT ONLY THAT, once he gets healthy, which will be next season, I will continue the failed experiment, as opposed to moving him back to the position where he was considered one of the best in the game.
Obviously a bit of sarcasm and snarkiness—Edsall is within his rights to make these decisions, and hopefully will have us in better shape in a couple years—I’m certainly not giving up on him. These are just two decisions that seem wrong, and (at least in Tate’s case) stubborn.
Tate
Maybe he should get on the same graduation plan as DOB and transfer somewhere else where a program can fully utilize his talents. Obviously I want to see these guys succeed at Maryland and help the Terps make some noise next year. But for the sake of both of these kids I really hope that possible NFL careers aren’t ruined by Edsall’s questionable decisions.

pe’shon howard out for about 12 weeks. mitch mcgary down to fl duke or mich. alex len will miss either 4 or 12 games but can play in puerto rico games. graham favored to sign with md.
Pe'Shon
Really too bad about Howard. He’s a good ballplayer who hustles. Hard to believe we’ll start out with 7 scholarship players. Why would Len be able to play in Puerto Rico? Is it because it would be games outside of the U.S.?
