Recruiting Services and Rankings....just a bunch of BS

Look I may get scorned for what I am about to say, but if you step back and think about the recruiting services, all of them are pretty much BS. About a decade or so ago there were private online services that helped inform the general public about who were the best players in high school basketball and football. Primarily only targeting the most prominent high school programs like Dematha and Oak Hill in Men's Bball and the state of Florida, Texas and California for football.

In the past 10 years, the attention that high school players/recruits are getting is insane. First off there is no way to compare two players the same in high school. So essentially you are taking two or three individuals opinion about these players and believing what these so called experts are telling you. Look its not hard to spot who the top ten high school basketball and football players are in the nation. When Lebron was coming out, I didnt need a so called expert to tell me he was the best player in that class. The problem is I never believed that Mike Jones was the second best SG in the nation behind Lebron, now I saw that as a college student, but these so called experts didnt.

Now there are so many services or analysts or experts or whatever title someone wants to give themselves that know how good these players are and how good they will be. I just dont buy in. I think there is too much emphasis on recruiting top talent that is listed on the rankings through these services and not enough credit given to coaches that recruit players that fit systems, schemes, attitude and direction of a program. This is not a post to defend Gary and his so called lack of recruiting ability. This is just a rant about how all these services make fanbases across the country believe a team will be good purely based on a recruits ranking and not their ability to play or a coaches ability to coach.

Don't get me wrong, if you take a team that has a bunch of five star recruits vs. a team with one three star recruit pin them up against each other, I think we know who will win. I am simply saying that if MD lands the #40 player in the class of 2012 and another team lands the #45 players doesnt mean MD is better then the other team. If you take the three major services and put them up against each other on where each recruit stands, you get three entirely different results. ESPN can say a player is #12, Rivals has him at #45 and Scouts has him at #144. So how can a player a phenom in one persons eyes and a pretty good player in anothers....oh yeah because its all speculative and its one or a couple peoples opinion.

The point I am trying to make is that these services have made the job of a coach more difficult then beneficial. Expectations are now about who you recruit then how good of a coach you are on the court. Case in point, if results were soley based on recruiting John Calapari would win the Natty every year. Coaches like Gary Williams would have never had a chance, but who has won a Natty and who hasn't. Coaching still matters more then recruiting, case closed!

So before you crown Turge & Co. the next best thing since slice bread and write off Edsall because Franklin brings in more stars per player, wait and see then you can judge.

Oh yeah one last thing, too many people care too much about recruiting that they are in depth about womens bball, seriously get a life. Now you get excited about women high school recruits...WOW!
