Maryland Madness Open Thread: Basketball Returns for Terps
Ladies and gentlemen, our long national offseason is over. Basketball is back.
The festivities kick off at 9:30 ("festivities" loosely translates to "gymkana and a few other minor things"). The good stuff starts at 10:30 - that's when the alumni game begins, featuring Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox, Steve Francis, Greivis Vasquez and a host of others. WIth any luck, teams will be chosen pick-up style with Juan and Greivis as captains. Then the introductions of the men's and women's basketball teams start at 11:00, presumably with the men's scrimmage finishing up around midnight. For those of you going, the doors open at 9:00.
CSN is airing it live and in technicolor if you're in the area. If you're not, TerpsTV will be streaming it online, and it looks like it'll be free.
Mark Turgeon has already spoken about the importance of the event, calling it "huge for me," so hopefully it's suitably entertaining for everyone. A few recruits will also be in the building, as we've already discussed.
And this thread is open for business. Comment away.

i heard that ....
exactly at 11:10; students will grab President Loh and hold him hostage, with the demand that he will be let go when the NCAA frees Alex!
If nothing else tonight
Make damn sure Alex is out of the building before the clock strikes midnight!!!!!
Sunny Jane just got a red card at 66:39 and
the whole Maryland team got a yellow card at the same time. Can’t tell you what happened – just watching the game tracker.

Do you know what that stage is for?

Been wondering that myself
Doesn’t make sense for the team to come out there. Gotta be some sort of act.

Not a very big stage, but a stage nonetheless
Also, second JayZ/Kanye song they’ve played since I’ve been inside.

Watching the Madness Memories things
Has re-enforced the idea that we need to move this back to Cole.
Very small crowd at the moment
But given that the real stuff doesn’t start for another half hour, not a big deal.
2/3 maybe?
The non student wall is pretty empty.
Also, I LOLed at the Gary Maryland Memories.

I am absurdly disappointed they brought Sasho in for a game of "Keep the balloon of the ground"
For reals.
If the men's team dances on that stage
I’m going to be severely disappointed.

DAVE NEAL
Some guys in the crowd held up 8×10′s up Neal standing over Nolan Smith
Ha
Gary
Man that was a great sequence him greeting the team topping it off with a fist pump
Damn I miss him already….
Half the crowd needs to cheer for red
and the other half for white
Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.
Hate to say it
But if I was a recruit watching the crowd doing ………… nothing …. I wouldn’t be impressed.
Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.
Yep.
I think I know why they didn’t bring anyone in for this: not worth it. Might do damage.
Letting Madness fall into this state of disrepair is criminal, and one of the big disappointments of the end of the last decade.
What am I missing?
This has gone great so far. Dunno what you expect out of the crowd, its full and people are cheering as much as could be expected..your not gonna get a duke environment for an alumni practice game

Does Wilcox
Have any eligibility left?
by terp121 on Oct 14, 2011 11:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The alumni game is ok basketball as far as that goes ...
But I think it would have been much better if they had the Terps b-ball radio announcer giving play-by-play in a typical “excited announcer” voice … and maybe even some color commentary as well.
Right now, we’ve got:
“Johnny Rhodes.”
“Chris Wilcox.”
No emotion, no nothing.
It also would have been much better if they’d designated one side of the arena to cheer for white and the other to cheer for red. Get the students screaming for one side or the other.
Right now it just kind of sucks.
Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.
Maybe
They could’ve gotten the crowd into it a bit more..but it’s a fun thing, not supposed to be too serious
by terp121 on Oct 14, 2011 11:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That's true ....
But many schools use their “midnight madness” as a recruiting tool.
A crowd that basically seems asleep when it has members of its only national championship team returning to play isn’t going to impress any recruit that is considering Maryland.
If anything, a recruit would be given the impression that the fans just don’t care. Maybe it’ll be different when the current team gets out there, but to show that attention for the previous alumni would have been a great prelude to the introduction of the current teams.
Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.
The fact
That the gym is completely full puts us ahead of I’d say all but 20 D1 programs. Tell me how many schools got 18k on midnight madness? As far as crowd noise, I dunno what u expect. Maybe Kentucky and UNC are wilder but I think u r being over ambitious in terms of what this event is
by terp121 on Oct 14, 2011 11:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Is the arena full?
It doesn’t look that way on the ends. The sides look ok but the ends look empty.
Maryland is a good basketball school, and should be a top-level one. Those 20 D1 programs are the ones that Maryland should be competing with for recruits.
What I expect is a crowd that sounds alive and is cheering. When the only cheering one hears is the “here we go Maryland here we go” from a dozen cheerleaders, it doesn’t impress anyone, including the potential recruits.
Maryland has had Dick Vitale at its madness celebration before. Maybe if ESPN was broadcasting the crowd would have more energy? If ESPN broadcasted and the crowd was like this, it’d be an embarrassment to the school.
It seems to me there’s not much energy in the building. I hate to be a downer here, but Maryland is capable of doing so much better, and it is disappointing that they haven’t. The crowd should be pumped up and rocking before either the current women’s or men’s teams are introduced.
Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.
Dave Neal DAYUMMMM
That was some sick behind the backs
LOL @ the ref
“No no no, staying right here. That’s why I get paid the big bucks.”
I think that was Mouton arguing over the call.
my perfect maryland madness would be the men’s team running an actual practice at midnight with wale rapping in the background…..don’t need all of this extra stuff
I was going to say that earlier
The fact that this starts at 9:30 with all the gymkana and silly games is kind of ridiculous. What point does that serve? Start it at 10:00 or 10:30, have Wale do a song, introduce the women’s team, women’s scrimmage, introduce a few big alumni to serve as honorary coaches, introduce the men’s team, scrimmage, get out.
This is a bloated whale of a boring event.

can we have the video tomorrow
want to see it again
Faust was definitely the highlight of the night
With Len’s cartwheel a close second.
Also, MVPe’ owned his intro.
mosley
Man I am really pulling for mosley this year, he’s just so likeable. Seems like he’s just had some bad luck. I hope he averages 17 a game this year. I know thats stretching but we’ll see.
I agree
I would love to see him go out with a great senior year.
by Garyland4Ever on Oct 14, 2011 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions
He was a great scorer in high school
And there are some aspects of scoring you just can’t teach, so lets hope he displays that natural ability this year.
Thoughts
Faust = swag
Stoglin = cut and looks like he shed his baby fat from last year
Len = please be eligible
Pankey = looks the part, can he play?
Sean = its his tem
Pe = Swag
I want Len cleared.....
Jesus you don’t see 7 footers like him…
That was pretty crazy
Faust is the most swaggeriffic player we’ve had in years. I seriously think he outdoes Pe’.
I think we all officially have a man-crush on Alex Len.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE
I still don’t understand why it takes so long for the people at the NCAA, to determine who is and who is not eligble ?? What else are they doing ?? Already “cleared”, AUBURN.
Did the same thing W/ that kid from KOREA we had. What else does the NCAA do ??
Not ALABAMA, LSU, MIAMI, OHIO ST, OREGON, ect !!!!
Waiting for "documents"
from what I understand, the NCAA says they are still waiting for documents, presumably related to Len’s Euro-league participation.
You can count on the NCAA to drag its ass, but the athletic dept needs to be more on top of this, and get the NCAA what they say they need.
I don’t know exactly what documents are needed, but they have fax machines and email in the Ukraine, so I don’t understand why this hasn’t already been done.
by lockwood11j on Oct 15, 2011 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions
The NCAA is requisitioning documents from Dnipro, or whatever team he was playing for
Making sure he wasn’t paid more than compensation for travel, housing, etc., like an American prep school gives out scholarships to its players.
right, i would just be a little disappointed if Len is ultimately cleared but is forced to sit out a week or a month of practice, in addition to a possible suspension period, simply because the team didn’t know the NCAA was still waiting on documents.
If he ends being ruled ineligible, I don’t suppose it really matters.
Matters
I think it does matter. We need all the size we can get. My point is, the NCAA has had PLENTY of time to review this case. Hope Big LEN doesn’t end up like the big man from Kentucky !!!
I guess there clearing all the SEC’s football teams !!!
GO TERPS
Attendance
Its hard to tell, but from the end zone shots the crowd looks a little on the lighter side, at least as compared to other recent midnight madness’s.
I remember attending a few of these back in Cole, where it was pretty full. Even so, I remember it being a little strange, because despite a large crowd, its sort of hard to reach anything close to regular season game intensity when you’re basically watching a pickup game.
I miss cole.
Went to the WVU game and ate lunch inside cole before the game. Never a bad seat there. Just hot as eff.
by nmcvicker03 on Oct 15, 2011 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
hot as eff and
not enough air to go around for 14500 people. You would walk out of there after a game, semi-delirious from breathing carbon dioxide for 2 hours.
by lockwood11j on Oct 15, 2011 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions
lol yeah
but boy was the energy there. Until everyone passed out from a lack of oxygen.
by nmcvicker03 on Oct 16, 2011 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions
We missed an opportunity tonight. This midnight madness should have been about the beginning of the Turgeon era.
The alumni game was okay but that was really a tribute to Gary. Tonight should have been more about the beginning of a new era than the ending of Gary’s. There should have been a montage about Mark’s approach to the game and what he wants to accomplish at Maryland beginning with this team. It should have included an introduction of Hill, Spinelli, and Ransom what they are doing to bring outstanding talent to College Park.
The highlight for me was just seeing Faust, Len, and Ashton.
just so yall know
in terms of attendence, it was pretty full. it seemed empty bc people werent allowed to sit in the sections behind the stage, otherwise they wouldnt have been able to see the introductions
glad to hear that
i was watching the TerpsTV stream, which did not come through particularly well on my end, so I couldn’t really tell.

Nolan Smith was there
sitting with the DC Assault people. Kind of strange….
Also, Steve Francis looked like he was about 12 beers deep.
by Garyland4Ever on Oct 15, 2011 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions
The crowd was pathetic.
Not in size, but in energy. Complete lack of any energy. By the time the men scrimmaged, a third of the people/students had left. The whole mens’ scrimmage was lacking energy. Half the people were just sitting there like they were told not to make any noise. What is this? Glad know big recruits came, if I were one I would’ve been really turned off by the crowd tonight.
i was there
Thought it was about 6000 or so people. Pretty weak. No one hardly cheered. I was like come on its Chris Wilcox! No one even seemed to know who he was.
