Football attendance dropped for several reasons. The biggest was lack of consistent winning. Ralph averaged 7-8 wins per year but he could not consistently win against the best teams in the ACC mainly FSU, Miami, and VT.
Second, our out of conference schedule was to put it plainly, boring. We were not challenging better programs but merely arranging cupcakes to beat on.
Although many schools do the same thing, it definitly hurts a program like maryland where by scheduling interesting out of conference games is make or break.
I think this is finally becoming apparent to administrators with games lined up agaisnt Notre Dame, Texas, etc.
Hopefully we can get a game with Penn State, that would be the best thing.
