Here are some quotes from the new Terps head coach:
"Well, I publicly announce today that we are setting our sights on the ACC championship, and that's what I came here to do: Win the biggest prize of all. . . . Hopefully, when we win the ACC title, we'll be undefeated so we can compete for the national championship."
"I absolutely think Maryland should be one of the premier programs in the country,"
And from the AD: "[He] won unanimous support of our selection committee, and that was great because he was always my top choice." Continuing... "Everyone has said that he is a dynamic coach, that he is knowledgeable, a relentless recruiter and a tireless worker. He's done twice what we want a coach to do: build up a program. Based on those credentials, he was an early front runner."
So by "new coach", I mean back in 1996 when Ron Vanderlinden was hired at Maryland. Quotes are from Vandy and Yow. Sounds very similar to Edsall's tough talk at the press conference yesterday. Vandy was from Northwestern; Edsall from UConn. We all know how horrible the Terps were with Vanderlinden as head coach. Those were my 4 years in school so I am very familiar (good thing the basketball team was AMAZING). Edsall seems very similar (hard working recruiter, defensive coach, terrible offense). I really hope I'm wrong, but the similarities are scary.
I'll buy my season tickets and cheer on the Terps next season, but clearly talk is cheap. We need results from Edsall and I sure hope he makes it happen next season.
GO TERPS!
