2010 Maryland Football Coaching Candidates: Then and Now

I thought this would be a nice topic to discuss since there has been several prior Maryland Head Coaching Candidates that have made changes this year. There was a list of 5 or so top targets for the Maryland HC job last year. Obviously we know that Edsall and Leach were the top 2 according to most. Edsall got the job, and no this post is not to discuss him. Also, everyone by now knows that Mike Leach is the HC at Washington State and has brought a lot of attention to that University and might actually make there football program relevant since the Ryan Leaf years.

But what about all the other top candidates. To the best of my knowledge the list pretty much went like this; Kevin Sumlin, Rich Rod, Gus Malzahn, Randy Edsall and Mike Leach. With Edsall and Leach already spoken for let's look at the other three considering all have made a move in the past week.

Kevin Sumlin who is a minority coach from Houston. Ran a high powered offense that almost got the Cougars to a BCS bowl and an undefeated season until the C-USA Championship game. I can see why Sumlin waited on moving since he knew he would have Case Kenuum back for his sixth year and knew this year would be a possible career year. Sumlin has taken the HC job at Texas A&M and leading the Aggies into their first season in the SEC. Talking about high expectations, I think the Aggies are aiming higher then what the Terps were expecting. All in all I believe Sumlin made the right move to pass on the Terps job.

Rich Rod. The former WVU and Michigan HC, who had many major recruiting connections to the DMV almost seemed like a good fit for the Terps other then his lack luster career at Ann Arbor. It took WVU to levels that I would have never imagined and cashed in to go to Michigan. I don't think Rich Rod was given a chance up there and as soon as Big Blue could bring in a insider then did with Brady Hoke. Rich Rod just took the Arizona job, shich is dealing with the hangover from one of the other Stoops brothers. Arizona seems to be the West Coast version of WVU. Zona is not known much for its football prestige and Rich Rod could hit a homer there, not to mention the living in Zona is nice. I think Maryland regrets not going after Rich Rod more seriously.

Gus Malzahn is now the HC at Arkansas, wait a minute that's Arkansas State. WTF!!! Really, I can't believe this former HS coach turned down a BCS HC job for an opportunity at Arkansas State. I simply think this was a money deal at Auburn. With Cam Newton at the helm I would of looked like a genius calling plays. I truly believe Malzahn was a beneficiary of having Cam as his QB and should have left after last year. This would in my opinion been a worse hire then Edsall, since this guy has zero experience at the college level and jumping at the Arkansas State job pretty much proves that as well.

On a side note, Pittsburgh's HC has left to become the Arizona State HC and several of his assistants had already left to go to Arizona with Rich Rod. This could be extremely hugh for Edsall and recruiting since we have assistants with Pitt ties. Also we have several Pitt area recruits on board already. I know Maryland lost out to Pitt with several players for this year and maybe Edsall can start grabbing a couple of PSU and Pitt defectors to help build this class. I believe we have 50 scholarships open this year, so we need to fill many of them.

Maybe Edsall will prove us all wrong. In a previous post about coaching changes happening at Maryland, I will hold my breath on that one and wait and see.
