Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

I still think ODU is a courtesy deal because his brother's there, but past that it's probably safe to say that VT leads and Florida is #2.

The thing I found interesting is that he's considering 7 schools, but he only gets five official visits. So why'd he take an official to ODU, which is literally like a few minutes away from his home, when an unofficial would be basically the same thing and he'd be able to visit an extra school?

That says to me that he doesn't plan on taking all five. Hopefully Maryland can at least get him on campus.

VT is not going to let this guy leave the state. ODU has no chance and FL isn’t going to land this guy. All the coaches need to show up on Fausts door tomorrow and lock it up cause we have lost out on this wing. Everyday we are losing a wing it seems. Days, Ross, DFS

looks like

Baru/ Faust/ Harkless are our top targets. Let’s start signing these guys up.

I thought of him

But he still seems like a longshot. Fingers crossed. The other 3 seem really attainable and we need to MOVE on them.

A class of

Sullivan, Baru, Faust and of course Gibbs would be fantastic. All 4 and 5 star talent, I’d never complain.

The only longshot vibe I've ever had with him comes from his location

Unless he really wants to stay in the south, Maryland should be able to get it down to two or three. Mississippi State scares me, especially with their recruiting history. Alabama has a shot because of Anthony Grant. Everything about Maryland, from the pieces they could have in place and coming in, the pedigree they have, and most importantly the exposure he could get here* (just ask Greivis Vasquez), makes them a serious contender, IMO. The only potential roadblock would be if he doesn’t want to leave the South.

Of course, recruiting isn’t logical. We may not be serious about him, he may not be serious about us. But, on the surface, we have a shot.

*This doesn’t get mentioned enough. Terrico White was a monster at Ole Miss, but got no national talk. Greivis Vasquez is pretty well-known. Plus, there’s the media market thing – I’m not sure there is a media market most places he’s looking. If he wants to market himself to the NBA at all, and I’m assuming he does, the best place to do it would be at Maryland (for once).

I wouldn’t worry about Finney-Smith. We’re 99.9% going to land Faust for SG and we are in there with Harkless, Sullivan, and Space for SF and Baru, O’Bryant, and Lewis for PF. We’re going to be contending for championships in a couple of years.

by jhough813 on Aug 18, 2010 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly....

This guy isn’t all that important to our class. He doesn’t play a need position and we are in good with 4 other top 100 wings.

by BklynTerp on Aug 18, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

dude is a top 20 recruit

he’s important

by bloodwatermission on Aug 18, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh...

Hes more top 40-50. Hes definitely overrated at #13 or whatever it is ESPN has him at. Again he don’t need him. We NEED Faust and we NEED one of Baru and O’Bryant. Anything after that is gravy. Would have been awesome for sure but I’m not sweating it.

by BklynTerp on Aug 18, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Recruits are going to commit elsewhere. Ross and Finney-Smith are top flight talents, there not going to wait to see if we get our top guys. Once Faust, Baru, Harkless and O’Bryant start listing top 3s and were not in it, Ill be worried.

I have this feel that everything is going to go to shit soon. I hate to be a pessimist but that’s what I’m feeling.

by terpfan812 on Aug 18, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd give it a few weeks

The first indication will be Faust. If we land him, the class is a success no matter what. If not…uh, then it has the potential to be bad.

Bernard Sullivan

He has apparently set up official visits to Maryland, Virginia, Clemson, Purdue, and Marquette.

Once again

Tons of people comment on this site with the yearly big dream recruit hype. And year after year it comes down to the mid-part of the list with some 3 star rated players. It is fun, and for the most part keeps people in the b-ball frame of mind during a long off season. Truth of the matter is, it,s Maryland b-ball under GW and we are going to watch most of the names above visit and then sign with other schools. Once again folks, thats how it is and I have seen it for many years. I wish it would and could change ( Bino) but more then likely it will not. And Gary will still take what he has and what he gets and work with it, mold them and kick 75 -80% of other schools asses anyway!! class will be Gibbs, Lewis, and 2 names not mentioned above…..Don,t mean to rain on any parades but thats the pattern..

You're right that this is the history

But there are a few reasons to hope/think it’d be different this year. Jeff Goodman said Gary was more energized, he very well could be loading up for one final run, and most importantly, Bino Ranson is on board. He was hired, for the most part, to be a game-changer in recruiting, particularly in Baltimore.

Personally, I think its safe to expect big things until Faust. That’s the tipping point. It’s still possible to have a good class even if he goes elsewhere, but it’s not going to be a good indication to whiff on target #1.

DFS would’ve been nice, but like BkylnTerp said, he wasn’t the be-all end-all. The buzz surrounding him seriously dropped off and Maryland still has some very nice options (particularly Harkless, potentially Sullivan as well, and maybe even Space). Besides, Justin Anderson next year can bring two of the three things that DFS brings (slashing ability and defense) and do them even better; JOB or Baru can handle rebounding pretty well on their own.

I agree

to a certain extent Ben on the increased optimism this recruiting season. I follow this stuff very close. I talk to many people about recruiting and have some contacts that have proven over the years to be reliable . I see alot of the local kids during the school year play in the metro area to include B-more. I hear kids talk, they chat alot. I hear and listen to what they say. Lots of kids just do not like Gary and the way he comes off in a first time meet and greet. In my opinion, it will take way more then GW coming out of his shell this summer so to speak to win over some of the big names this year. Agreed, Bino will help keep the kids interested, but they still have to play for Gary. Or as a kid mentioned above was over heard saying you mean GW mister hardass!!!! Thats the perception some of the these kids have, and in B-more,,, directly it has been passed down over the years..Tough thing to over come street wise…very hard!

hahaha

nah not stalking anyone, my opinion as you have your own, never thought attending a HS b-ball game was stalking anyone.

by rvandegrift on Aug 18, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha I'm just messing around.

I totally buy into what you are saying. Gary’s all business and probably doesn’t suck up to the recruits as other coaches might (cough Roy Williams cough). That probably scares away a lot of recruits.

by kckb8 on Aug 18, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Vandegrift is actually dead on

I knew some guys who were top 150 types around here back in the 1995 timeframe when I was in school and they thought the same thing.

by settleten on Aug 18, 2010 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. I think we land Faust and miss out on all other 4 star players. Our class would be Gibbs, Faust, and Greg Lewis. We aren’t going to get Obryant, baru, or any other pf target. Harkless is a wild card.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Aug 18, 2010 8:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

UR right

Why even try? GW shouldn’t even have a recruiting coordinator. (rolls eyes)

Hey yo

I must have hit a bad spot huh? Look I am a huge Gary fan, leave it at that. Remember this is a forum for opinions to be shared nothing personal.

by rvandegrift on Aug 18, 2010 8:40 PM EDT reply actions

NBD

GW isn’t the only " mister hardass" , go ask the dook players about Mister K, or about unc’s williams, etc etc. GW is no more “hardass” then most of the other HCs, he just doesn’t pander to the handlers that the other HCs do.
The ballers know that GW is one of the best coaches around, they know UMD is a top tier U with ALOT of media exposure, but ALOT of the handlers are looking for cuts and GW doesn’t play that.

by Hey Yo! on Aug 18, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

a coach is a coach had a few myself i wanted to kill. But just telling you all what i hear, nothing that hasnt been heard or written before. I know all about GW and his displeasure with the back door games. Thats the main reason I respect the man that much, thats why its so cool when he whips there cheating asses,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

by rvandegrift on Aug 18, 2010 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

watching GW beat dook and unc every year w/ their all mcd rosters just proves how badass of a HC GW really is! Recruits know how good GW and UMD is but unfortunately most of ’em have handlers.

by Hey Yo! on Aug 18, 2010 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

why

does it seem that all of the sudden people don’t think we are going to land Baru? I though we were the leader all along and his list (other than unc) isn’t that intimidating. i have mild confidence we will bring him in. he seems like a hard working player gary will love.

by bigsam20 on Aug 18, 2010 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Mostly because we started to recruit J.O.B.

You don’t just start recruiting another, very similar player at the same exact position unless there are some complications and/or the other one’s a longshot. They’d still take both, and be smart to do so, but the timing doesn’t instill confidence in me.
