Maryland to Join Big 10?
That's what Bleacher Report is saying, citing a radio station in Indy. They say ND, Rutgers, Syracuse and MD will join Nebraska in the Big 10. Personally, I don't buy it. Way too many questions and the time frame seems waaaay to short. Plus, Bleacher Report is the People Magazine of college reporting, so take it for what it's worth. I think we can expect to see a lot of these type of rumors popping up over the coming days, since it appears the Nebraska domino now appears to be the official shot across the bow for conference expansion...

This post reinforced how unprepared the ACC is to deal with the very real possibility that a member school could leave. It scares me…. Of course Yow could not know about the ACC’s plans because MD is going to be in the Big 10.

too quick
I don’t think I could deal with md being the first sole defector from the acc. We’d never hear the end of it!

Can’t buy anything this big coming from Bleacher Report; no offense to them, but I’m going to wait till we get a slightly more reputable source.

When you watch the Orioles every night, a beer after dinner turns into a six pack WAY too many times. Stacey
I am not a fan of being the sole defector
I would be completely against this, but if UVA were to come too, that would make it much more palatable.
The UMD needs to act in the best long-term interest of this university.
Is membership in the ACC best for us if there are other options? We need to make an informed decision taking into account the direction we’ve taken and progress made with Kirwin and Mote.
Cmon mad its from bleacher report...
I stopped reading stuff from that site a long time ago, because all the reporting is based off opinion. Yow already said we are not leaving so why are you trying to be a beat writer and bring things back to life.
What it really is ‘key-word’ reporting, in which they have an army of interns who make sure that every article written contains lots of google buzz words like ‘MD to Big 10’ that will ensure them lots of hits on their articles.

dropping my season Tix 4 bball if this goes through...
just don’t have the energy to re-build rivalries, track the teams in and root for an entirely new conference. If MD does this, I feel it is a slight to a good deal of their fans who have supported them and the ACC.
Not trying to be sour grapes or emotional about it, but I just don’t see my being interested in the MD v Nebraska hoops showdown, etc…
Jeez
Dave, please do not cite Bleacher Report. Let’s do a good ole fashioned SAT analogous relationship.
Bleacher Report is to Sports as The National Enquirer is to News.
"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"
I can't wait...
…to see who we get to face in the ACC/Big Ten challenge!!!
Thought about that too. Does Miami get Nebraska, now that there are 14 teams?
How does possible further expansion affect the games?

Coupla thoughts
1) Yeah, it’s B/R. That means basically no credence to the rumor at all. Actually, about halfway-down, they say that the same station that floated the rumor even said it was laughed about on air. Definitely false for now.
2) Anyone else thinking “Why Nebraska?” They bring a lot to the table, but the two big factors that were talked about the entire time was TV money and academics. Does Nebraska provide the markets of a Missouri, Syracuse, Rutgers, Maryland, UVA, etc? That’s a legitimate question, they very well may. I know they don’t have the academic prestige of the others mentioned.
3) Still too early to call a “we should go, we shouldn’t go”, but I expect a lot will happen today.
Just a question
Why are Maryland fans so eager to get out the Big Ten?
Is it because of the Big 4?

Take a look at the last comment on that article, its from the radio station that the article quotes:
" 1070 The Fan 316781 Wfni_crop_45x45 posted about 13 hours ago 1276136314 2401940 2401720 1070
@Todd: Todd – WFNI (1070 The Fan) announced that the Nebraska deal was done…but only acknowledged that another source was reporting Notre Dame, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Maryland’s interest in joining the Big Ten. We actually scoffed at the idea on-air and never really gave it any credence."
The author of the article completely misunderstood the station.
Yeah, just saw that too
I said in the post I didn’t believe it, but I thought it was worth mentioning and noting that rumors like this are going to run rampant over the next few days/weeks I think…

RE: Just a question
To RAJ, the Wake Forest Grad.
I don’t think the Maryland fans/administration are chomping at the bit to do anything. This is, and should be, a business decision, plain and simple. The impending change has the potential to vault other conferences ahead of the ACC in a number of critical categories (revenue being the primary one!). While Duke and UNC are excellent basketball schools, the large North Carolina contingent really brings down the ability of the ACC to demand a big TV contract. That is not to say that there is not any talent there (there obviously is), but all they really bring is essentially two mid size TV viewing areas (RDU and Charlotte) and they are all very weak in big revenue producer – football. While some could argue that UMD is only in the upper mid tier of talent in the ACC, UMD is certainly one of the most coveted by the BIg Ten for its ability to generate higher TV contracts and maintain solid academics. While I for one hope UMD stays in the ACC, I do think Maryland should take a long hard look at the Big Ten. UMD and/or the ACC needs to make a few smart moves here to ensure they continue to be an upper echelon school/conference.
Thanks for the response.
I know that Maryland brings a big market, but why as fans would you want to move?
The Big 10 offers better competition in terms of football probably, but the ACC is obviously the conference to be in for basketball. It just seems that being a charter member (and Clemson feels the same way apparently), that both teams are looking to get out when they can according to their fans.
Just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I don’t want MD to move. But I also don’t want MD to be sitting there with their proverbial dick in their hand if the ACC falls apart around them.

Even if FSU, Miami, Clemson and GT were all to leave (which idk about at this point), we would be fine.
We would try to get UConn, Pitt, Cuse and Rutgers to fill the 4 spots and go more of a basketball route, which I think Maryland fans would be even more behind honestly.

"If" we can get UConn, Pitt, Rutgers and Cuse, that would be great, but
that is a big if. I, for one, would not be happy to just be a basketball conference. That is my favorite sport by far, but football is the tail that wags the dog. In this case, it pays to be the aggressor. If the ACC is not going to step up with a plan, UMD should. The ACC is superior to the Big Ten in basketball, but the Big Ten is nothing to sneeze at (Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin,Illinois) and they are far superior in football. I wouldn’t mind seeing Ohio State, Michigan Nebraska and Penn State playing at Byrd stadium every couple years. Not to mention Maryland is never on TV in these parts, so a big Ten channell is attractive
Athletic revenue is driven by football, not basketball
If you don’t realize that, you’re ignorant.
