Finally: Bruce Campbell Drafted in Fourth Round, Headed to Oakland
Oh, the irony. We (and several others) thought that Bruce Campbell had a shot to go #8 overall in the first round to Oakland. They passed on him, and he plummeted. Three rounds later, early in the fourth round, Campbell was drafted - and will be headed to Oakland anyway.
We've already talked about the shocking fall for the uber-athletic Campbell, so I'm not going to reiterate it. I will express my dismay about my Redskins passing on him despite still desperately needing offensive line help, but that's a talk for another day and another blog.
Meanwhile, the Bay Area is a veritable Terrapin haven, featuring Campbell, Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Vernon Davis. Man, Maryland needs to start recruiting the Oakland area hard.
Best of luck to Bruce in his NFL career. He has star potential.

I hope Bruce made an informed decision that unfortunately just didn't work out
If another year could have made him a first-round selection, he gave up a lot of money by going early. We can’t know his personal family situation or his academic status at Maryland, but a phone call to Jared or Stephon would have made it clear how much money was at stake. Plus some conversations with NFL scouts and assistants could have helped him to understand how much another year of college ball was needed to improve his play. As it is, we can just express our regrets that he didn’t go much higher.
Congratulations to Bruce, but...
I hate to see him go to Oakland. I really want to see him succeed in the NFL, and Oakland is a place where football careers go to die. I wish him the best of luck, but I he doesn’t toil away there. That team is still far away from being a legitimate contender for even the wild card. I would’ve liked to see him go to a team with a future, but the Raiders wanted him. Hopefully him and DHB can help turn that dumpster fire of a franchise around.
If you actually look at the Raiders roster, there is quite a bit of talent there. The major problem (Russell) was just solved by acquiring Jason Campbell. With a legitimate passing option, teams won’t be able to stack the box and McFadden and Michael Bush will see more holes opening up. Most people blindly believe what the analysts at ESPN say and don’t see the franchise is turning it around. I think Bruce will compete for a starting spot at RT and may get some time at LT depending on injuries and his development.
I don’t say the Raiders are a dumpster fire because of what ESPN says. I’m a Broncos fan (I know, Tebow), so I get to watch the Raiders a lot. Every time they seem to make some strides in the right direction, they seem to regress. So until I see them maintain a level of success, I won’t believe they’re back.
And as I said before, I love Bruce and DHB, and I wish them nothing but the best there. Unless they’re playing the Broncos. Then all bets are off.
Broncos fan here also
It’s been hard these last couple of years to see our star Terps go to the Raiders. I wish them (DHB and Campbell) nothing but the best.
Shame so many teams passed on Bruce… tons of potential… I actually almost thought the Broncos might take a chance on him at one point and possibly try him in the interior (before we got Beadles, Walton and eventually Olsen).
Uh, what?
The major problem (Russell) was just solved by acquiring Jason Campbell.
In one game as a freshman at Miami, Wieters hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, then pitched the bottom of the ninth for the save. On that day, the God nickname was bestowed. - Sports Illustrated

Jamarcus Russell is a joke
The guy is lazy and overweight. Jason Campbell is a class act who knows how to win. I never thought he got a fair chance in Washington with so many changes he had to constantly endure. I think he will do well in Oakland.
Agreed
Actually he is a $11,255,440/yr joke. He has to be one the biggest failures in NFL history. I saw him throw some passes against the Chargers that made me wonder if he was trying to throw the game. Then, when he came in the second half against the Skins when the Raider starting QB went down, the Raider OL looked like they let the Skins rushers through. I think Jamarcus was sacked 6 or 7 times that half. The Raider management had to know he had no future there.
It was a bad draft philosophy
The Raiders for the last few years have been drafting based on combine workouts, not college level success. I love DHB, but Crabtree should have been the pick last season, and I think we all know that. And Russell is another example. Combine warrior. He could throw 50 yards from his knees, and Al Davis couldn’t pass it up.
This is the first year I can remember where they didn’t base their draft on combine success. Good for them.
Just got back from the Red-White game
You didn’t miss to much. Jamarr was good, but unspectacular. 143 yards, 1 TD (to Torrey) and 2 picks (both Kenny Tate). Scott and Meggett only had about 50 yards combined. DJ Adams stole the show: 14 carries, 71 yards. And Danny O’Brien had 93 yards, 2 picks, and 1 TD.
White won the game 21-13.
