Duke still 4th in AP?
How does Duke lose and not drop at all in the rankings, yet we only move up to 19. Teams like Gonzaga, Temple, BYU are ahead of the Terps, I'd love to see any of those teams go 13-3 in the ACC. Classic national media bias against UMD and for Duke, I just hope this isnt foreshadowing of ACC player of the year and coach of the year voting, when clearly Vasquez and Gary are far more deserving. Maryland is the Rodney Dangerfield of college basketball.

It makes absolutely no sense
If a team loses…..they drop in the polls. It is simple. Duke is the only team in the nation that this could happen to. And if Duke is supposedly the 4th best team in the country, and we defeat them, then we should move up more then 3 spots. It just angers me even more and makes my hate for Duke grow even more. If anyone wants to see a real riot see what happens if Scheyer wins player of the year or Coach K wins coach of the year.
I hate Duke ...
just as much as the next guy, but I have to say it makes total sense that they stay #4. Look at it more closely. #5 Kansas St. lost to Kansas so they shouldn’t jump anyone. #6 OSU didn’t beat anyone that was any good and they have 7 losses compared to duke’s 4. #7 Purdue also didn’t beat anyone that was any good and lost Hummel and to MSU (which plays out in voters eyes). Besides all of that, Duke has the best resume of all the teams 4-10. Who else would be #4, I think it is a unique scenario but it makes sense.
That being said I totally agree that UMD should be higher than 19. I kinda thought we’d be 17th at best.
one or the other
Its close at the top but Duke has 5 losses… Either duke lost to not as good of a team (if our ranking is “accurate”) and should have dropped or they’re saying duke lost to a good team so they don’t drop, which would mean we should have a higher ranking, How does temple, for example, stay ahead of us by beating St Louis and GW? It doesnt matter for anything, rankings don’t mean shit, but it just points to the continued lack of respect for UMD
i see your point
when you look at it that way it does make sense for Duke to be number 4, but if they truly are the 4th best team in the country then Maryland should be higher then 19. I kinda thought between 13 and 17 was in the making for this week but i guess not. I like the ESPN power rankings more. They come out every thursday i think and after the Duke win last week they had us at 16. Im curious to see what they have us at this week. I put more stock into what the people at ESPN say then a bunch of AP writers.
What a load of crap

Do The Math
We lost to #10 and #13, both of which were at neutral sites and we really didn’t keep either game increadibly close. We beat #4, who has an advantage of 3 losses over #5, and also beat UNC twice this year while #5 OSU lost to UNC this year. Temple ahead of us is questionable, but this is a good spot. You don’t just magically become a top 15 team if you haven’t held a spot in the rankings most of the year.

The national media has always held a bias against MD
partly, in my opinion, because we never really have the standout kind of guys. Our coach, despite all his flair, often flies under their radar, partly because he doesn’t chase after the really big recruiting names. Furthermore, besides Vasquez, our last stand out player was Juan. Even Steve Blake, as much as I love him, wasn’t a standout player in their eyes.
Frankly though, I like the lack of respect, because it ignites a burning fire for revenge in this resilient team.
Just to clear up
I am in no way attacking Gary or our program. I love the way our program is set up, Im just pointing out why the national media likely views us in such a poor fashion.

As long as...
As long as Greivis wins ACC POY, I’m fine with wherever the team is ranked. They have been under-respected all year, and I think they all fed off of that. Mosley was quoted that the team likes being the underdog, so I’m ok with that, as long as the Terps pull in a minimum 5-seed in the tourney, hopefully a 4.
But back to POY, Greivis has better numbers than Sheyer, both overall and in ACC play, and both teams will share the regular season title. With Greivis having better numbers and the same record as Dook, I see no reason (other than the obvious Dook bias) that Greivis should not win ACC POY. We all know he deserves it.
The only ranking that matters right now is the seed we get in the tournament.
However, no one has mentioned yet about the absurdity of MSU being ranked number 11 compared to us being ranked number 19. MSU is behind us by 6 spots in the RPI, 15 spots in the KenPom ratings and 10 in the Sagarin rankings. We both have the same number of losses, and we play in a tougher conference. The resumes are very similar IMO, but we are ranked 8 spots lower in polls.
Gary is right. A perception is created at the beginning of the season and that perception is hard to change.
Gary is right
I’m not going to say anything about where we’re ranked, but I will agree 100% with what Gary said. Perceptions are absolutely made at the beginning of the season. Because they were national runner-up and returned their best player, the voters will always love them more than other teams that could be better. It’s an annoying concept, but that’s what you get with human voters. Still better than the computer though.
2 Things: Having a win over the #4 ranked team looks good and raises the perception of the strength of the ACC. Also, since Duke remained the same after losing to MD, clearly the voters respect how tough it is to play against Maryland, which is praise of MD. I see it as commendation for Maryland’s toughness.
