The surprise [in the defensive backfield] is [Travis] Hawkins, because he was a highly recruited defensive back as a corner and he seems to be more comfortable the first day playing safety. He really looks pretty good. He plays aggressive. He could have been in trouble a couple times [Tuesday] because of his aggressiveness. I don't care. I want him to be aggressive, then we'll make sure he's where he's supposed to be.
...
I think he played safety in the Crab Bowl, and I think he enjoyed it. ... Most players are smart. They count. They see if I come over here, maybe I can [play]. I think that was probably what he did. He counted. We just talked. He came to us.

I know there were some questions regarding Hawkins' move to safety, but this might answer them satisfactorily. Sounds like the move wasn't a negative.

What's his speed like?
Cuz if he has D-1 corner speed, I’d want him to stay there.
If not, safety sounds good to me.
Yeah I thought he was fast.
Keep at corner. Why change a good thing?
Travis to safety seems like a big decision
Its understandable for Travis if he sees it as his best opportunity to get on the field. However, I thought Brown’s defense is built on a speed rush and CBs that can jam WRs and then stay with them once they get off the line of scimmage, i.e., Travis.
I’d like to think that spring ball would help settle questions like where he best fits into the D scheme. If the offense has improved enough it might. Last year we came out of spring thinking Brown’s defense could shut down offenses . Once we go onto the season we realized our OL was so anemic that spring ball hadn’t show us much at all about the D. I hope we don’t have a repeat. Spring ball is particularly important this year if we are to improve.
