Fellow starter Chris Allen is more doubtful. The Spartans’ leading 3-point shooter missed practice and was wearing a walking boot over his right foot and ankle. Izzo said he suffered an arch injury against the Lobos.
Allen vowed to play against Maryland, but Izzo said it may come down to a game-time decision and is a concern because an injured arch is hard to deal with.
“You can’t tape it like an ankle,” Izzo said.

My guess: he’ll play, but he won’t be healthy. He was expected to guard Vaz.
I fear that they may
I do think they are too inexperienced, it’ll come back to bite them eventually. I think I have WVU coming out of that region. Still, if they win the championship, I wouldn’t be surprised.
An Uncertain Future
eh . . . too early to tell
I had WVU coming out of that region but
Kentucky has looked great so far, so I’m rethinking that pick.
Right now I would say Syracuse vs Kentucky for the title. If the Syracuse big man is able to play at 100% then their my pick. But without him I don’t think Syracuse is deep enough and Kentucky is my pick.
Wow, I just figured out that MMOD has useful tidbits of information on the bottom line
Next to ExxonMobil. For instance, “Syracuse’s Rick Jackson, F, has 3 fouls in the 1st half.”
That’s an awesome idea. Good job NCAA on that one.
Go Murlin
wild and disciplined Terp basketball – 40 minutes or more – beat the challenge
And the Elite Eight are on the 27-28?
This is my first season really paying attention to March Madness.
BTW I’m watching the Cuse game and they were saying they were going to do something about Greivis Vasquez during the halftime show
never mute gus johnson.

I mean, I said basically the same thing for Maryland
Although I at least indicated that they had to beat Michigan State. But hey, I’m up for any disrespect I can find.
Oh, and BTW Detroit News, pretty sure MSU would have to beat Ohio State, whom they lost to on their home court late in the season.
Lenny Elmore
Our man on CBS tellin it like it is!
Anyone else wish we had Gus Johnson for our game today?
Batista with the CATCH
ha ha yeah...
Or the Gonzaga UCLA classic he called a few years ago when UCLA came back to beat Adam Morrison and Gonzaga and that was the final play that he called. Classic Gus
He'd blow out my speakers.
He loves to yell like he is at the game.
When your team is winning he is great. But when they are losing you want to punch him in the face for getting so excited about the other team’s good fortune.

I would hire Gus Johnson to call games in my living room
Or follow me around and do play by play for my life.

I almost hope he doesn't qualify
I know I’m not supposed to wish bad on anyone, but I find it difficult to wish good on Terrence Ross.
Syracuse is legit
They’re gonna be a tough out.
And if they get Tony Wroten in 2011, they’ll be good for a long time. I can’t believe Wroten had us in his top 5 once.
Culture
MD has more culture than upper NY – I would rather go here
Isn't Syracuse the "city of festival"?
Agreed, though, DC > * in terms of culture. Not sure CP is the best college town, though.
Not to mention

U of Md's location isn't bad by most standards, not the best, but not bad.
Having DC right next door, only a subway stop away is pretty damn cool. Compare that to most midwestern towns.

Far as I concerned, that would be the best sort of game we could have – let the bench get some NCAA experience

We're not getting ANY fouls called.
We’re getting hacked everytime we go inside and they’re not making calls, so MSU can keep doing it.

They are setting screens and then plowing guys who cut underneath further away from the ball.

This is what I LOATH about officiating in the NCAA. One group of officials, they call it every time, another crew won’t call it at all. And when the latter happens, Maryland always struggles.
MSU came out ready to play....

I dont care what everyone else says...i have always hated our press.
ill admit it worked against GT but god damn it is killing us now!
Reasons for optimism
Pros:
- We’ll be shooting at the magic basket.
- No Kalin Lucas.
- We’re a second half team.
- We played terribly, and we’re one rebound away from this being a seven point game. We’ve come back from worse.
- MSU has played above their level.
None of this will matter if we don’t at least rebound a little bit more, though.
OK, lets all take a deep breath
Its a single digit game
GV and JWill got to the half without picking up a 3rd foul
Lucas may be out
Gary is a master at halftime adjustments
Landon, Williams, Hayes, and GV have all scored so it’s not a one man show out there
If we can clamp down on D we can win this thing
we can DO THIS
we just need to get them rattled w/out lucas. Couple turnovers, they’re FG % will drop and we must capitalize!!!
In other news. Georgia Tech is hanging tough with OSU
Could be a future Elite 8 Matchup if we can pull this out
With the way we've been playing I'd expect this be be a doubble digit lead.

My money’s on s.r.g. He has Cuse winning, and is already in a pretty good position.
We put up 39 in the half
And I think we tend to score better in the 2nd half. But we allowed MSU to score 48. That is my big concern.
One half to go
Need to scratch, claw, stomp like a turtle for 20 min – no more undisciplined offense, get back on defense, make some treys
Looking at the halftime stats
I see MSU shot 56% and outrebounded the Terps 21-9. Ouch.

We can stop the press if we can stop them on the offensive end
The way they are getting those second chances, I am not sure how we can gt back into this without playing uptempo. We either start getting rebounds or we keep pressing.
I like the press
they are without their top 2 gaurds
ill take getting rebounds then
too many easy baskets and open threes in the first half because of the press.
MSU has been a pretty average offensive team

Georgia Tech game we couldn't get over the hump
We have to do it here. We need to run some screens for Bowie and Hayes to try to hit a 3.
I wouldn't mind that sort of 3
just not the ill-advised kind we saw in the GT game. Just work to get a good shot whether it’s a 2 or a 3.

Lots of time left!
Terps need to rebound and make MSU make contested shots.
When a team hits tough shots against the Terps, it’s annoying but it’s far more annoying to see a team get hot with wide open jumpers and layups.
Come on, Terps!

well we all now gary is a great coach...so thats bs
but id def say hes getting out-coached right now
Eventually a Maryland team will box out
Effort + Box out > Effort
The Peter Principle
Have we risen to our level of incompetence? We cannot rebound. Poor perimeter defense. Strength of other team is rebounds. And unconscious 3-shooter today.
JW

togertherness???
The last thing we need is togetherness. What we (college basketball) need to stop allowing any bum with IQ’s of 10 to referee a basketball game.
I mean is it not clear as day that Green TRAVELED?
Problem
Could not play 6 seconds of defense . . .
54%
Give me a mother effing break. WHO shoots 54% from 3-point land in the tourney? Is there some law that all my teams must give up unbelievable games where their opponents play out of their rectum when it matters most?
Yeah, and they are a season 33% 3P team.
Which is really my point. We are a season 38% team, so it’s at least more characteristic of us than it was them.
I can't believe its over
That was the last UMD game I will ever see Vasquez, Hayes, and Milbourne

It’s not all bad
great fight great fight
mich state needed an insane buzzer beater to beat us despite mich state leading for the entire game….great fight, just sadness now
Sorry Greivis. Sorry Eric. Sorry Landon.
now i know wat GTech felt like. to do everything right at the end but losing on a freak buzer beater
nah this is worse
considering we were down the ENTIRE game and just when our star player saves us…
Week? No way
This hurts a lot. It’s up there with gown in 58 seconds, IMO. This game meant too much, especially considering it was an NCAA tourney game and that it was Greivis’s last game. Throw in the fact that it was Gary’s best chance to get back to the Sweet 16 in 7 years and they had a shot to even get to the Elite 8 and Final 4.
I still can't get over it
But I just smiled, thinking of Vasquez hitting that shot.

i’m in shock and i don’t even know how long it will take to get over that. after coming back with the D and doing everything right they had to play such bad D on the last play. man that sucked
Heartbreaker
I don’t think that was GW’s best game plan. That press to start the game seem to launch MSU, especially Summers. Maybe he has beaten Izzo before with that plan. It didn’t work today. The comeback was great but I’m not big on moral victories.
TRAVEL!!!!!!
Green fucking TRAVELED. Does nobody realize this?
seemed like
after the Warrior scored our final hoop, the defense was WAITING for them to respond . . . like they were frozen in place – nobody picked up that guard at top of key – JWill was standing in middle of lane not picking anyone up right?
Most painful loss I've ever endured as a Maryland fan
I will never recover from this
It's been a fun tourney, but I can't watch anymore. Feels like I'm watching soccer or something now.
Really enjoy the site, it’s been a great source for an expat like me (living in TX now). I’ll definitely see you guys next year!
Want to know the ultimate dagger?
We were cheering for this at the time. When that guy on MSU lost his tooth, the clock initially showed 3:58 left after Bowie made the shot. Then the officials went back and reset the clock to 4:03. There would have been 2 seconds left rather than 6. Difference in the game right there (among other things).
There were multiple non-calls
There were 2 other times they didn’t call traveling. MSU pushed us from behind all game when we were going for boards, they went over the back, they had non-5 second calls. Officiating, from a crew that was “a Final 4” group, was piss poor.
Pretty much sums it up.
And I can’t watch the tournament anymore either.
I just can’t stop thinking that it was the last time we’ll see Greivis, Eric and Landon play. That’s what’s really getting me down. Seems just like yesterday Greivis stepped into Gary’s office, saluted him and said “Reporting for duty, sir.”
Very sad. Very, very sad.
Just to torture myself
I watched the last 6.6 seconds on YouTube. Although Green wasn’t graceful, I don’t think he traveled. Sadly, Lucious ran the whole way up the court with no one anywhere close to him. Alas.
by Jason Middlekauff on Mar 21, 2010 5:36 PM EDT reply actions
Wasn't a travel, didn't shuffle his feet
I just watched it five times. He didn’t shuffle his feet. He came to a stop, rotated his pivot foot, and then took a little leap. The ball left his hand before the pivot foot came back down.
You sir, are a masochist
How could you watch that five times?
Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
Its worse than the fifty eight second meltdown against Duke because its the NCAA Tourney, Greivis Hayes and Landy-Cakes are done for good, the guy traveled, and most importantly NORTHERN IOWA. Maryland had the easiest road to the FINAL FOUR IN THE HISTORY.
SOMEBODY PLEASE KILL ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just screw michigan state
and mike gminskis ear ring. That d-bag.
I dont see how someone did not get a hand in lucious’ face.
As of right now the world is ending….jk but really. I cant believe this is the last time we will see this team play together.
I am sick to my stomach.
Also we can not blame the refs for anything. We can blame ourselfs because none and none of our guards crashed the boards at all. There was three spartans around who ever was our center.
As far as i am concerned this game is bullshit because Mich.State is a crappy shooting team and they made everything. Like i said last game thread it is like throwin a hotdog down a hallway.
I dont even care about the coming up football season i just want t get to next basketball season now.
I am the biggest Vazquez fan in the world but Vazquez can you really not make it to the sweet sixteen in your whole career. It took him 35 minutes to play with some intensity today.

I'm not sure I'd care about football
even if the Terps had won.
A game like today’s is so frustrating because you can think about all the plays besides the last shot that, if just one had gone differently, the Terps would’ve won—any of the Terps 3’s that went in and out, any of the loose balls from near steals that MSU managed to recover.
Just to really tick me off, MSU will shoot about 35% against Northern Iowa.

But I’m not as bummed as I should be, I think it’s because I was expecting MSU to make that.

I am certain GW in particular is taking this hard and he is not alone
I have watched a lot of Terp basketball and there is just something special about these guys. Maybe its seeing the potential these guys had when others didn’t give them much respect. I was around when Walt Williams kept Maryland basketball respectable. I have had a special admiration for him ever since. I think a lot of Terp fans feel the same way about Eric, Landon, and Greivis.
