Our colleague Peter Bean over at Burnt Orange Nation has done a great break down of the Ken Pomeroy ratings for this year's tourney. He breaks down the whole tournament as well as each region. Why should you care? Midwest region has the highest mean rating for the top 4 seeds, which is 6.8. The other three regions are all in double digits, with the West sitting at a pretty 19.8! The Midwest overall though has the lowest mean, 56.1. So basically the selection committee loaded up the top 4 teams and countered that by putting worse teams in the bottom half of the bracket. That still doesn't help the Terps escape the death gauntlet that is the midwest. But in Gary I Trust.

I think Maryland stands a good chance of getting out of their pod. I haven’t looked over the bracket a lot and will do more this week.

On an aside, I was very impressed with the Maryland fans and their representation at the ACCT. One of the top 3 fans there and one of the farthest away.

missing the postseason

Here’s the top 5 teams missing/rejecting the postseason according to KenPom ratings

  1. Miami (FL)
  2. Michigan
  3. Boston College
  4. Alabama
  5. Wright State

As long as were talking pomeroy...

According to KenPom.com, Duke is the #1 team in the nation. If we can upset Duke once, whose to say the same can’t be done for Kansas? Assumming Mosley’s slump isn’t back (we really need him and Milbourne to be comfortable taking 3s), I don’t see how we can’t beat any team

When we are playing our best, we are unstoppable.....

but, on an average day or worse…..if we make it to play Kansas it would be hideous.

Duke being number 1...

Makes me not take the Pomeroy rankings seriously

I didn't get that

Or Wisconsin at #3.

With the 18th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Florida QB Tim Tebow. (not a RB!)

People love to talk about Maryland and recruiting and blah, blah blah. Speaking of lists, here are some teams not in the tournament:

UNC (only five times in the history of the tournament has the National Champion not made the tournament the following year: Florida, Ohio State, MSU, Indiana State) Add UNC to the list of NCAA collapses.

UCONN (missed two of the past four)

Michigan

Indiana

Arizona

UCLA

Florida (last team to get in. had missed two straight after winning title)

Just goes to show you, it happens to the best of them.

Out of all the ACC teams, Maryland got the worst draw. Doesn’t seem right, although I still think they get to the Sweet 16.

ACC sleeper: Georgia Tech. I could see them in the Sweet 16.

You really shouldn't include Indiana in that list

Nobody thought they would be in the tourney this year. Sampson really screwed up their recruiting for 3 years. I think Crean will have them back in the top 25 soon enough though. Great coach.

Big Crean fan

One of my favorites in CBB. I used to hate Indiana, but I just like Crean too much. Classy guy, great recruiter, and good Xs and Os guy.

I put them on there because they are historically a big-time program, regardless of any expectations for this season. And actually, you help makle another point. It’s why you don;t want scumbags running your program. In the long run, you go down.

Correction: In the case of Sampson, it was the short run.
