NCAA Tournament Bracket Revealed: Maryland Draws a Four Seed, Houston in the First Round

I guessed five seed. Guess the committee likes Maryland more than I do, because the Terps received a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. They'll match up with 13 seeded Houston, the C-USA champion. MD will play Friday, March 19th, in the Mid-West region, playing their first two games in Spokane, Washington. Should they advance to the Sweet 16, they'll play in St. Louis, MO.

If the Terps beat Houston, their second round matchup would be against the winner of Michigan State-New Mexico State. Past that, Maryland would have to play a #1 seed, the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas is the #1 1 seed, and is ranked first in both major polls.

Maryland's bracket just so happens to be absolutely loaded. Michigan State is a strong 5, Kansas is the best team in the country, and Ohio State and Georgetown could both make a lot of noise. This bracket will be interesting to watch, but very difficult to advance out of.

I'll have more on Houston tonight and tomorrow, including the traditional "first look" stuff.

Beyond pissed

Omg. We wanted to avoid the #1 seed and we didn’t even though we lost!! This is a major punishment for whatever reason. We are obviously the last #4 seed. So all we had to do was win at least 1 ACC tourney game? DAmmm! Michigan state, then Kansas!!! It would have been better to be the first 5th seed…

I Like

the Houston, MSU draw, a Sweet 16 is definite. Kansas will be tough but not impossible. GO TERPS!

by Hey Yo! on Mar 14, 2010 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t. Izzo always has his team playing hot in the tournament. That will be a tough game

With the 18th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Florida QB Tim Tebow. (not a RB!)

Johnny

I agree but think about our past match-ups against Butler and Memphis. Those second game match-ups weren’t any easier. It’s as if the committee said, “okay MD we’ll give you a chance to make the sweet 16 since last year you were a game away, but that’s all for this year”

Okay, I looked at mich state and we will beat them. I am not impressed. They are about 7 deep. They are not deep in the post though. I see us playing against Kansas. It’s just about that first game once again.

by ihaterudygay on Mar 14, 2010 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

the first 5th seed

would have the same road as the last 4 except a slightly harder first game

by dcsportsfan08 on Mar 14, 2010 6:57 PM EDT reply actions

Respectfully disagree

Purdue doesn’t have arguably their best player in Robbie Hummel, and Kansas is significantly better than Duke.

by Ben Broman on Mar 14, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

but wouldnt the best five and worst four be together?

by dcsportsfan08 on Mar 14, 2010 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes - my bad

Got confused in the brackets.

Still though, getting a mid 5 would’ve been a lot easier.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I wanted anther shot at Butler

by MurlandTerps on Mar 15, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly,

My point was that one more win could have placed us in an easier bracket. Duke and Cuse have the easiest brackets.

One game at a time

Can’t be unhappy drawing a 14 loss Houston in first round. Just win and advance then worry who you play next. Enough upsets happen in this tournament that you just worry who you are playing that day.

by njterp01 on Mar 14, 2010 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Let's not assume

we’ll be playing Michigan St. in the 2nd round. Upsets happen…

by worldwidewes on Mar 14, 2010 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Remember,

Michigan St. are annoying beasts on the offensive glass. And a far better defensive rebounding team than any in the ACC.

by ivan24 on Mar 14, 2010 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

and probably still pissed about last year

by nmprisons on Mar 14, 2010 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

Assuming we win Friday, I’d rather beat Michigan St. and have that satisfaction.

by ivan24 on Mar 14, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

my bad, yes can we wear the gold jerseys…and lets just worry about houston

by D.C. Gaitley on Mar 14, 2010 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, people are assuming we'll even get to see Kansas.

One game at a time. When the fanbase and media get ahead of themselves, that just makes the team think too far ahead. Houston first, then worry about the second round.

by kckb8 on Mar 14, 2010 7:59 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Sweet 16 is the goal here. Stay focused on that.

by Sephtical on Mar 14, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL. Are you actually saying GT is going to beat Ohio State and Georgetown/Tennessee?

by JC1 on Mar 14, 2010 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Calm down.

It would be awesome, though.

But since you asked, Georgetown has the tendency to lay some eggs, and I’m not that impressed with Tennessee. But Ohio St. is tough, this is true.

by ivan24 on Mar 14, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m calm, just think that is really far fetched. It would also mean we knocked off Michigan State and Kansas. All of those things happening together is a heck of a long shot.

by JC1 on Mar 14, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course. I just want a piece of them again, and when it really matters.

by ivan24 on Mar 15, 2010 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I think OSU is really overated along with the big ten

Remember that UNC beat OSU in the big ten challenge and E. Turner had 23 in that game. I think Georgetown is most likely to come out of that side of the bracket.

by Jeffro78 on Mar 15, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Getting absolutely no respect in these stupid bracketology shows. “The Midwest is brutal. Kansas, Ohio State, Georgetown, Michigan State…” No mention of Maryland at all. I hope they are listening.

Gold vs. White Jerseys

If anybody has this information, please let me know it:

What is our record in each of our jerseys?

I hate to be superstitious, but I think Gold is the way to go

by kryptonianjorel on Mar 14, 2010 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

This year

White: 7-3
Red: 8-5
Gold: 8-0

by Ben Broman on Mar 14, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

All of UA's jerseys are pretty ugly, IMO

Football is the only decent one. They really need to get on making some nice, unique jerseys, because these aren’t doing it. Way too busy, lots of unnecessary swoops.

I withstand the golds because they’re the golds.

by Ben Broman on Mar 14, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea never been a fan of them…

by MurlandTerps on Mar 15, 2010 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the stats.

Personally, I hate the white jerseys, like the red, and love the gold. I think they’re an improvement over the Nike jerseys

by kryptonianjorel on Mar 15, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i was thinking that once they took the floor on Friday

When was the last time they wore white? didn’t look right.
