Long Rest

As I hunker down onto my couch for the next 12 hours of college basketball coverage on my second favorite Sunday of the year, I've started to ponder this years Terps team. One thing that has me really frightened is the long rest the Terps are facing before the tournament. Maryland closed out the season in tremendous fashion, and had a full schedule of games which had me glued to the TV for what seemed like every other night at one point. Maryland sat for a few days before traveling down to Greensboro, and laid a big stinker in terms of the shooting performance. Though JWill has shown tremendous growth, this is not a team that can bang it around down low. We live on the dribble penetration and the kick out to the open man. Eric Hayes has made a career off of this. When the open man can't hit that shot, we struggle (see GT first half). Maybe it was just a bad day, but I have to think the long rest threw the team's rhythm off. So I went back and looked at the schedule to see how the Terps do on long breaks.

Nova Loss - 5 days rest

Clemson Loss - 5 days rest

Duke Loss - 6 days rest

GT Loss - 6 days rest

I know that I'm picking and choosing my losses and all 4 of these are tournament caliber teams, but the fact that half the losses came after a long rest scares me. The team will be sitting for potentially a week entering the tournament and will need to hit the ground running in that opening game. What are your thoughts?

Everybody has relatively equal rest going into the tournament.

So hopefully that shouldn’t be a factor.

Great teams step up when they need to…and I can’t help but think that we are one of those teams. The “bye” factor won’t play a role in this tournament, as it did in the ACC and BE tournaments. At this point in the season, I see us as a primetime team: 3 seniors and an enthusiastic freshman big. Can’t wait to see if we’re ready to step up.

Go Terps!
