Well regarded as a personable recruiter, [Rob] Ehsan quickly developed a bond with [Moses] Abraham.....Ehsan remained in close touch with Boncore and Abraham over the following weeks, making it clear from his standpoint that the Terrapins wanted Abraham to sign with them. But Boncore expressed frustration at times when Maryland assistants said they would bring Coach Gary Williams to Progressive Christian games and then not come.
"I'm waiting for Williams to sit down and really say something," Boncore said Feb. 16. "We'll see what happens. Rob is saying one thing, too. So I'm trying to figure out exactly where he's coming from. I mean, I'm a huge Maryland fan. But man, I cannot figure them out. I just don't understand their modes of operation."
....
This past week, Boncore said Abraham asked Ehsan if he would be a head coach anywhere next season. In a text message, Boncore wrote, "The kid is sad cause he wants to play 4 rob."
Washington Post article on Moses Abraham
Sigh. I'm going to ignore the Gary thing, because we've kind of come to expect that from him from time to time and that's just his personality, but we need to lock Ehsan up.
Also, sounds like Abraham's done to Georgetown, as expected. At least, that's what PCA AD Renard Phillips seems to believe. And the fact that he's sad that he won't be playing for Ehsan indicates that...he won't be playing for Ehsan.
Quick note: pretty good example of the tilt in coverage here. It's not huge, but the MD flaw - that is, Gary's lack of recruiting - got blown up. The fact that JTII approached Boncore and straight up asked,"Are you going to give him to my son?" is mentioned and otherwise ignored.

Why?
Did Gary prefer an Icelandic player to this gem? I’m very confused. I tend not to get mad at Gary because he doesn’t recruit well, but I think he let this opportunity pass him by. I highly doubt Abraham will choose us now, especially with a 5 man class. I would trade this guy for Palsson any day though. He’ll probably be a great fit with Georgetown’s offense.
I've loved Ehsan since the day he came to Maryland.
He spoke to a student group I was in last year, and I was impressed by everything that he said. Seems experienced beyond his years, and has tremendous potential as a head coach. I would LOVE to see Debbie Yow extend a longer contract and pay him more just to keep him around.
if you buy this stuff i feel sorry for you
consider the source—-and consider the fact that gary does not play ball with these slimy handlers
why does a 17 year old kid need a freaking adviser other than his parents to decide where he feels comfortable
i mean what value does this guy bring to the table—-answer? NONE—-he’s a blood sucker
My guess—-boncore is mad that gary didn’t show HIM love

Why the kid needs help over here
Maybe the idea of a high school kid staying at someone’s house, getting guidance and meals, is not so bad? I would want that, as a parent, if I sent my kid thousands of miles from home.
His parents are still in Africa, I believe
He needs someone. That it’s Boncore isn’t great, but that’s a handler for you. Without him, Abraham would be totally lost. He’s played in the states for a year and doesn’t know the process. Boncore doesn’t do a lot of good, but he does some good.
His father died when he was an infant.
I think Mom’s still back in Africa.
But Boncore does this with everyone
a la Goodman—-who he also directed to GTown
funny an independent “advisor” advised two straight kids to go to GTown isn’t it?
but yes let’s all RUSH to hear what he has to say

Ay yay yay---
one half of bad basketball is all it took to bring the gary haters back out of their caves—-
pathetic….
WE MISSED OUT !!!
“Driesell asked Abraham how high he could jump. In jeans and a jacket, Abraham leapt up and hit his elbow on the rim of one of the baskets.”
If you think otherwise then you are a fool. If we ever play against this guy, he is going to dominate us. He is like another Soloman Adibi or Thabeet. This guy can get us over the top. And I agree with the Palsson comment. He is just another Jin Soo Kim…A COMPLETE BUST
Idiot post of the year
BTW its Soloman Alabi…get a clue dude. Boncore wants cash, if he’s not given it he calls the coach out in the media. Its called extortion. Gtown obviously is willing to “do what it takes” and Boncore gets his money “somehow”.
What's the deal with
JT Jr recruiting for Gtown? Is he on the Gtown staff or is he an independent recruiter? If JT Jr is working for Gtown bball on his own, then Gary should enlist Lefty to recruit for UMD!
The thing I take issue w/ the most in this report is the writer saying that Moses has a strong relationship w/ Eshan and that GAry is not involved which paints a negative pic of GW. But when the writer discusses GTown he says that JT Jr. is recruiting Moses and has a relationship w/ him but fails to mention the lack of face time w/ Gtown HC JT III!
The report is very strongly a pro GTown slant when both Gary and JT IIII appear to have equal face time w/ Moses but the writer only mentions GAry’s lack of interaction and not JT III’s!
Yes. We are in a no-contact period. Gary can’t go talk to the kid. Sadly, Gary can’t just send his dad to do it instead.
Besides, if you follow recruiting there are a number of reasons why this just wasn’t going to happen:
PCA, where this kid plays, is basically DC Assault. DC Assault basically refuses to send kids to Gary. There are three potential reasons (1) they think Gary’s unwillingness to play ball is rude or (2) they prefer Adidas programs (the other two places Abraham is considering are Adidas programs, or (3) the handlers want a cut.
And, this article is old news. It has been clear for some time that Abraham was going to TN or Georgetown. This article is nothing more than a hatchet job.
PCA is a grade factory (and not just b-ball)
Maybe that’s a slight overstatement, but I don’t think by much. If we start taking PCA kids, we can forget ever improving the grad rate. They will be “1 and Done” or drag down the grad rate if they do stick around. I’m just as glad Gary doesn’t deal with the AAU mercenaries.

Maryland has a recruitment family too
When you see a Maryland recruit at a game or practice, you often see Tom McMillan, John Lucas, Lefty and others sitting nearby. I’m sure MD is a clean program that plays by the rules, and G’town is as well.
That said, the Post is still trying to justify their woefully unbalanced four part series of how far the Terp program has fallen, because of Gary’s supposed inability to recruit. Who knows what has gone into the kid’s recruitment? Strange that a lot of Feb. 16 quotes were used, as if they express the current situation. Is that sloppy, lazy or just the best Yanda could come up with after doing lots of digging?
Love Gary ,,,BUT
If this is true in any part. Why cant he go see a kid right down the road. Wake up people, stop making excuses for him. This is sad if you ask me. I know , I know here we go again, bashing Gary on recruiting. Sorry, I have read and heard to much on this same subject. Sounds to me if Gary would have had Eshan drive him down there a couple times we would have the shot blocking 4 we need. All the rest of you can say all you want about Gary not getting in the gutter with people who handle these kids. The fact of the matter is thats how the game is played. Now either join the rat race or remain outside the top 25 , except for a few years when the ACC is down overall and you have a handfull of decent seniors… Sorry, its just not this article but a body of work over years of hearing the same stuff. Great coach who doesnt put in the work when it comes to recruiting… Go ahead fellows , let me hear it!!!! But you know its true…..
you don't love gary
if you are so willing to believe this drivel from a guy like boncore without eve hearing gary’s side of it
maybe he just didn’t want abraham?

you have your head in the sand if you don't see this for what it is ...
1. You think Gary would not be all over this if it were handled the right way … and possible.
2. The “writer” for the Post has his own agenda and is anti-MD trying to make a name for himself.
3. This is a case of using selected “info” to contrive a story.
4. People have said this recruit was going to Gtown for at least 6 months.
5. Why waste your time recruiting a specific recruit if his handlers say it is Gtown.
6. Newspapers are dead … people get info real time.
A simple
not true from Gary will suffice for me. How hard is that ? Gary, whats up with this?

NCAA rules
Gary cannot comment at this point on his recruitment of a specific kid, so he cannot deny the Post article. Advantage Yanda!
I’m sure the Post does not know the whole story behind the recruitment of this kid or any other kid.
Then i can wait
for when he can comment. My guess is he never will make a comment. Thats the way he is, doesnt make it right. Just makes it Gary!

b/c he doesn't owe the detractors anything
why should he have to respond to this drivel—-on the same week where he’s crowned acc coy
by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 14, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions
There are plenty of recruits to be pissed at Gary about for not putting in the time/effort. This is not one of them. We still need a big – good thing I’m on the roster!
I'm just waiting for you to take over
It’s happening next season. Break’s over. Steve Goins is about to be unleashed on the ACC.
Yanda
And we wonder why the Post is losing subscriptions. If Mr. Yanda had done some real due diligence, and looked into the shady antics of Boncore during the time he “mentored” Jordan Goodman during his time in Germantown, perhaps a not so glowing portrayel would have been offered. Gary Williams will not come down to that level, and we should all be very thankful as terp fans.

Then why
if thats true does Gary not say too Rob , stay away from that??? Put your time and energy on a kid we will get? I am not sold on all the DC Assualt stuf, how about the coach get in the freakin car and go see a kid right down the street.. If your not interested in the kid then tell your top dog Mr, Eshan to stay away….I havent seen read or heard Eshan was told to stay away. Think about it….

B/C this whole story is a fabrication
Maryland has not been interested in Abraham for some time b/c it’s been clear he’s going to GTown for 6 months—-
this is a case of a handler mad that he didn’t get love from Maryland taking some parting shots at the coach and showing some love to the guy who was in contact with him
by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 14, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe, just maybe...
Gary didn’t pursue Moses because he had bigger fish to fry. CJ Leslie has been not unfriendly to the Terps over the last couple of months. ( One would presume that he went to the MD/NCS game with a ticket supplied by State. Then he shows up at the TERPS locker room?) One can dream.
Understood
but i doubht it. Abraham is more the type kid we end up with. We dont get the 5 star kids, such a SHAME ! Gary, talk to us, just dont let this stuff be written and not comment. Think about it people. If I was Gary, I would have to comment one way or the other on this article. If the kid goes to Georgetown.. I would love to hear why he did not sit down with the kid and his people way before they went to Comcast. What is wrong with setting the record straight? Of course that is if the article is true in every sense.
My .02
Honestly, I don’t care too much about the Gary thing, and not so much because I think he’s doing “the right thing”. He just doesn’t do this stuff, and he’s not going to change his ways anytime soon. As long as he can win, he can do it how he pleases. The incoming recruiting class isn’t stuff of legend, but it’s a step up. If he can pull that class, the occasional stud, and win with some kind of consistency, I’m fine with it. It’s just time to accept that this is Gary – take him or leave him. It sucks that he won’t do this, but there’s not a big point in getting riled up over it anymore, IMO.
As for the WaPo – I partially agree with EdDC that they’re trying to show that the 3-parter was justified. I also think they’re trying to recover subscriptions, and think this is one of the ways they think will do it – sensationalistic reporting. It’s a one-sided profile, and take it with a big grain of salt.
The biggest reason I posted this wasn’t Gary or the WaPo, but Ehsan. I’m convinced he’ll land us a stud one day, probably from the West Coast so he can justify Gary not going out to see games (please Jabari Brown). He might not have any master plan, but extremely personable people aren’t easy to find. Seems like a young Pastner.
Ben
kids want to sit with the big man. Yeah they get close to the main recruiter, but they want and demand head coach love. We make way to many excuses for this type behavior. The incoming class on paper seems better then it has been. Still not as good as it could be. Anyway, beating a dead horse wont change Gary too much. But I figure it is changing him a little bit. So I will in my own mind keep ripping him on recruiting issues right up till we get a few 5 stars.

Broken Record
Isn’t this the same story we all heard a few years ago with Rudy Gay? Guy likes the program and is shown love by a recruiter, but Gary refuses to show up and seal the deal. Gary is one of the best coaches in the country, and takes a less talented team farther than anyone else, but he just seems unwilling to put in the extra effort to land these guys that can put us over the top.

Exactly
Not just with Rudy Gay, seems to be all the time. Yep, Gary is Gary..And watch him pull his hair out when he meets up with teams like Baylor and Kentucky , Syracuse, and a host of others. Thats when only so much team play can cover for a lack of athlete.

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 14, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Umm wrong?
Gary went hard on Rudy Gay. The problem was that Gay played in a Uconn sponsored event for his AAU team and “magically” went to Uconn. then the NCAA passed a rule that prevented teams from doing exactly that. so you cant blame Gary for the Gay incident.
by word2bigbird on Mar 14, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Half Right
You are right that UCONN already had the AAU ties to Gay and that he was theirs to lose. However, I have heard from multiple sources that when Gary showed up for the in house visit he was extremely unprepared, hardly knew anything about Gay’s statistics, etc. and seemed overall uninterested. If that is Gary going hard, I’m scared.

You’re trolling on the board here. It’s sophomoric and discredits others opinions. Take it somewhere else.
1. One is a HS basketball coach from Baltimore. The second was a through the grapevine story I heard that more or less corroborated what the HS coach said.
2. I’m not a Gary hater. I think he’s a great COACH. There is a lot to be desired on the recruiting end, but he’s an oldschool guy and that’s understandable.

how you know all 5 star recruits are bad people with bagage and handlers to pay…once again son, read,,,,stop,,,think about what you read,,,wait,,,then respond…ltms idiot,
The “aricle” is typical WaPo garbage from a punk writer with an ax to grind who is still trying to validate last year’s junk. Odd how it comes out right before the tournament, during a period when coaches can’t talk to recruits, and after an ACC tourney loss. Not to mention it’s old news, as Abraham has been viewed as a solid GT recruit for many months.
Boncore is well known in the DC community as a shady, at best, supplier of talent. Of course, it’s not just Boncore who believes he should be getting paid by the University to provide players, advice, and nice press coverage. They’re all over the place, like roaches in a dive motel. Other want jobs to provide players (Beasly, Gilcrist). Minimum salary: $450,000. No doubt, they will keep the pressure on to open up the financial channels by insinuating it’s just part of the game. And one day, they will get their wish when Williams retires. But for now, Williams is right not to play the game even if others do. Just because someone else does it doesn’t make it right.
As for DC Assault, it is an Addidas funded enterprise. This is the college game today. The NCAA takes their cut and enforces only the most egregious violations that have to do with booster violations rather than corporate sponsors who fund the AAU circuit and drive shoe and apparel sales.
That said, it seems somewhat ironic this “debate” continues after Maryland’s solid performance this year, the development of a major big man in Williams, and a strong incoming recruiting class. The fact is, Gary Williams record speaks for itself. The man is a Hall-of-Fame coach.
Major LOL
Do you guys feel that Yanda aka Douche-mongol was holding on to this article since way back in Feb, and the only reason he didnt publish it was that UMD hadnt lost a game since then so he’d look like a fool.
Will always be a debate
when we get out fair share of 4 and 5 star recruits. Nothing wrong with trying to get better. Only excuses for not doing so, end of story…
it's not about excuses
it’s about finding the right type of kids
gary would rather have a 3 or 4 star who wants to be here and who is his type of kid than he would have a 5 star who is only here b/c gary made nice with his handler
it’s always been the case—-and it’s funny i didn’t here you saying much about it when we were winning a national title, or an ACCT or shocking the world this year and last year with our late season runs
it’s only after a half of bad basketball that you start popping off at the mouth
you are a one trick pony—-and you are the epitome of what is wrong with the fanbase

your world , the rest of us are just breathing in it i suppose. Another question my son? Have you ever bothered to read something,,then stop and think about what you read?? Never mind,,already answered with your response today.. THIS IS WHAT YOU SAID ABOVE…IF YOUR A 5 STAR PLAYER THEN YOUR A BAD PERSON WITH BAGGAGE AND NOT WANTED HERE AT U OF MD..GET A CLUE SON. As for the fan base, I was at College Park more then likely before you even could walk or were born. I have my opinion on subjects, sorry you have issues you need to deal with. Have a great day.
didn't say that
said—-gary has more successs recrutiting kids who want to be here—-
and he has more success teaching kids who want to be here
put yourself in his shoes—-would you rather have:
1) a 3 star who WANTS to be here
or
2) A 5 star who is only coming b/c his handler pushed him here
it has nothing to do with the character of the kid—-but the situation has more raminfications than you are allowing for right now

A lot of "fake" fans
keep popping up on the message boards. First we have people criticizing Grevis for giving back to the community. Now we have people criticizing Gary because he refuses to get involved in shady business.
People dont understand how much Gary has raised the reputation of this school. Before, we got hit with NCAA sanctions left and right. After Bob Wade’s tenure, Maryland was in a similar position to Cincinatti at the end of the Huggins era, in other words, everyone in the country viewed us as a sleazy program.
Gary came in and overhauled this college’s reputation. No one even dares of questioning Maryland on rule violations, because Gary has run the cleanest program in the country. And still, he has managed remarkable successes.
I understand that some people dislike certain aspects of Gary and/or Greivis. But to criticize them on their virtuosity is the height of ignorance and vanity.
AMEN buddy
real terps fans will be behind gary for life
who cares what some scumbag handler has to say about how much love gary showed
