ACC Tournament Day One Open Thread

Like most weekdays, I won't be able to do much game watching during the day. But if you can, this is the place to talk about it. Consider it an open thread for the day.

Today's schedule:

12:00 - 8 BC / 9 UVA

2:00 - 5 WF / 12 Miami

7:00 - 7 GT / 10 UNC (ESPN2)

9:00 - 6 Clemson / 11 N.C. St.

All games except GT/UNC are on Raycom.

Random prediction for the day: Miami might not beat WF, but they'll be closer than you expect. Miami isn't the worst team in the ACC, and WF is not the 5th best.

I’ll bite. I would rank the ACC as follows:

Duke
Maryland
Florida St.
Clemson
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest
Georgia Tech
Miami
Boston College
Virginia (w/o SL)
North Carolina
N.C. State

I agree but ...

I think UVA w/o SL is the worst team in the ACC… UNC beat UVA with SL and I think N.C. State might surprise someone in the tourney, but the NC St. thing is a complete hunch and based on nothing LOL

by Jeffro78 on Mar 11, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

I agree about UVA being the worst team,

but UNC got killed on their home court by UVA with SL in their only matchup. That’s why they lost the tie breaker.

by corns2 on Mar 11, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

I’ll take BC, Miami, UNC, and Clemson to win today.

by Go Maryland on Mar 11, 2010 10:14 AM EST reply actions

You are more likely to go 0-4 than 4-0, though I think Clemson wins and BC has a chance.

by nmprisons on Mar 11, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

I'd rather play UNC

With the 18th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Florida QB Tim Tebow. (not a RB!)

by John Stephens on Mar 11, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

Well, BC lost

But Miami is up by 10 on Wake right now…

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

I’d rather play UNC too. That’s why I picked GT. :)

by Go Maryland on Mar 11, 2010 11:05 AM EST reply actions

Georgetown winning was bad for us

bringing them closer to being ahead on the S-curve now. We gotta take care of business now

by amoskowi on Mar 11, 2010 2:09 PM EST reply actions

That's pretty surprising...

Collins isn’t even playing, right?

by corns2 on Mar 11, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

He’s not in the box score, so I assume he’s not playing.

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty sure I called Miami

Not exactly right, but pretty close. Canes up 14 at the half.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 3:13 PM EST reply actions

They're getting blown out. ESPN moved Wake back to "lock" status this week

…but if they lose to Miami, you have to think there is no way they get in.

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Dino=worst coach ever

whoever was arguing that piont with me earlier in the season should seriously apologize

with all the talent that team has—-they have the most talented all around player in the acc and probably the best guard at pushing it up the floor in the acc and yet—-mediocrity is their slogan

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

see---frank haith i think is a decent coach

it’s just hard to be a coach at miami in basketball—-what with the football program

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty sure...

UVA has made it easier for the Dookies to win the ACCT.

by TerpNation1 on Mar 11, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions

Duke would have beaten either BC or UVA so i disagree

if anything—-if the same uva team that showed up against us shows up against duke i give uva a better chance

sometimes teams rally when they lose a star—-they seem to be doing that

do i think they’ll beat duke? absolutely not—-but they have just as good a chance as bc did

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Unpredictable ACC

I can’t believe that UVA beat BC. UVA had lost 9 straight games and their best player was suspended for the year. BC on the other hand had won 3 out of the last 5 including a double digit win over UVA. I also can’t believe that WF might get blown out by a Miami team that finished last in the league and is also without one of its best players. Hopefully the upsets end before 7:00 tomorrow night.

by corns2 on Mar 11, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

meh---

there are 2 teams in the acc this year and then there is everyone else

the teams who are playing today are playing today b/c they are unpredictable—-so i’m not sure if i would project these teams on the rest of the conference

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Any team can really catch fire and do well in the ACCT. If you have one player go crazy (Gilchrist circa 2004), you can win it all. But as Timbitz said, these teams can’t do it consistently normally.

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

How is Tennessee ranked a head of us?

11-5 in SEC < 13-3 in ACC.

Not saying I don’t think Tennessee is good, but I do think we’re better…

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions

They're tied

21-21 at the half against LSU…
And New Mexico is only up 1 on Air Force

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

true

i don’t think kentucky will make the final four though

call it a hunch but they are too young and too entitled

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

Tennessee's rank is entirely based on...

their two big wins (KS and KY). Otherwise they have a very pedestrian profile…kinda like a better version of ours last year when we beat Mich St. and UNC.

We are clearly a better team than TN w/o Tyler Smith, IMO.

by jellisjenius on Mar 11, 2010 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Too bad...

we didn’t get Wake later in conference…I wonder how we would have done, playing as well as we were down the stretch. We almost had them as it was – get that back and we would have the ACC all to ourselves?

by abaek on Mar 11, 2010 3:46 PM EST reply actions

Presumably

Though we don’t really know what type of domino effect playing them later in the year would have.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Something underappreciated about Gary

is that since the 2 year postseason ban, we’ve ALWAYS finished about .500 for a season and have 5 sweet 16’s, 2 final 4’s and the Natty. And we’ve only been bounced in the first round a few times. I just thought of that looking at how much some big name programs have struggled this year (UCLA, Arizona, Stanford, UNC, Indiana).

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 4:00 PM EST reply actions

i don' think he's had a losing season since the post season ban

he should ALREADY be in the hall of fame—-700 plus wins—-took 3 teams to the ncaa’s

he even won at freaking american!

he was born to do this

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

Careful. I’m an AU grad. But you are right on. Gary Williams should already be on the Hall. It’s absurd he is not.

Would love to see the NCAA put Maryland and Georgetown in the same bracket, maybe to get to the Elite 8 or FF. Since GT keeps ducking us, someone has to schedule the game.

1-1 so far. Go Heels.

by Go Maryland on Mar 11, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions

why do i need to be careful

it’s pretty widely accepted that american is not exactly a basketball powerhouse and winning there is a great accomplishment

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

i understand---

just toying a little bit with an AU grad—-won’t forget the home loss they gave us a few years back—-i was there—-it sucked!

a little payback is all

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, we had Kermit Washington!

Okay. I’m dating myself, but I was at AU in 1981 when the mighty Eagles went 24-6 and got an NIT bid. Gary Willams was THE MAN. You would see him on campus all the time. When he accepted the Maryland job, I knew he would bring us back to where we belonged – maybe not a powerhouse, but a respected, winning program. People can say what they want, but Williams is a class act. I remember him hanging out on campus with students and randomely coming into classes to talk basketball. That was the charm of AU – and of Gary Williams..

BTW: Syracuse lost to Tulsa in the NIT finals that year. Duke, Michigan, Marquette, Purdue, UConn, USF, West Virginia and Clemson all played in the NIT that year. The 1981 Maryland team was led by Albert King.

You may now rejoin the ACC tournament.

by Go Maryland on Mar 11, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

I phrased that wrong.

Since the ban itself was lifted, Gary hasn’t had a sub .500 season. During the 2nd year of the ban we were 14-15 and the next year we were 12-16. But starting with the 93-94 season (they first when we were again allowed to play in the postseason), we’re above .500. Pretty sure there are only a small handful of programs who can say that. And Since 93-94, MD is THE ONLY ACC programs who hasn’t had a least one sub .500 season. That’s amazing.

by Dave Tucker on Mar 11, 2010 4:26 PM EST reply actions

can't watch at work

I can watch MMOD, but ESPN won’t give me access to 360.

Hey...

you wouldn’t happen to work at Defenders for Wildlife would you???

by Testudo10 on Mar 11, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

marquette is small but scrappy and fast

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 11, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

'Nova gonna drop

They’re a 2/3 in most brackets, a loss here would have to drop them to a 4/5.

Make room for The Terps.

by ace4919 on Mar 11, 2010 4:40 PM EST reply actions

No, they are a very solid 3 seen. They will not drop below that because of this loss.

by nmprisons on Mar 11, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

It sucks to be at work right now

Wake is still going to make the tournament becuase of the weak bubble this year. I was thinking that a few of the bubbly teams not playing well can also help Gtech’s chances, as in, they might only need 1 win in the ACCT to sneak in.

by NYCTerp86 on Mar 11, 2010 4:46 PM EST reply actions

Also

There really is a chance the terps could sneak in and steal a higher seed. Of course now that I’ve said this, they will fall flat on their faces tomorrow night..

by NYCTerp86 on Mar 11, 2010 4:48 PM EST reply actions

UNC-GT game starting

Playing Kaiser Chiefs for the intro?

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 7:02 PM EST reply actions

Here it is

The most important game of the day. UNC-GT. Favors looks good so far. Who do you guys want to win?

by terpfan812 on Mar 11, 2010 7:09 PM EST reply actions

No, not at all

Favors is demolishing people right now and we only beat them by 1 the first time around. NC’s awful guard play and inconsistent bigs suit us much better, IMO. GT would be a battle, UNC would probably be a little more comfortable.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

He had his best game of the season against us

I just looked it up and Favors recorded career highs in points with 21 and rebounds with 18, 9 of them Offensive. Definitely don’t want to face him again. We won’t have to if the game continues like this.

by terpfan812 on Mar 11, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

UNC is sticking around

The scary thing is that they’re actually staying close in the rebounding battle. Doesn’t indicate consistency, but it’s concerning.

Team of runs, that’s for sure.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 7:27 PM EST reply actions

Lets go heels

i want to whoop them again tomorrow

by nathan.w.ford on Mar 11, 2010 7:33 PM EST reply actions

Heels are dominating right now

Sweet.

Neither of these teams are very good, though.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 7:39 PM EST reply actions

Actually, these teams are very similar

Both rely on their big men (GT moreso). Both have awful guard play (UNC morseo, though they’re similar in this regard). UNC is just playing so much harder right now, fighting for second chances and getting them. Neither can hit a shot on their first shot.

Heels up 13.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 7:41 PM EST reply actions

Paul Hewitt

has got to go…has his stupid ass team chuckin up 3’s everytime. Just embarrasing

by Testudo10 on Mar 11, 2010 7:46 PM EST reply actions

That's the consensus among GT fans too

Dude can recruit with the best of them, but can’t coach.

I say we make him an assistant.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Go Heels!

But can they keep it up in the 2nd half? I agree that they’d be a much easier matchup for us.

Ben—Love your work here! I’ve become a big fan over the past few weeks.

by GayleG on Mar 11, 2010 7:50 PM EST reply actions

I want a heels win

but i dont want to see them picking up too much confidence in the process

by nathan.w.ford on Mar 11, 2010 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

I had that thought too

so here’s to a win tonight and a complete breakdown tomorrow!

by GayleG on Mar 11, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

Appreciate it.

Carolina is reverting to their regular season form right out of the half. If UNC were to win, though, I don’t think they’d suddenly catch fire in the tournament. I think it would wind up much like St. John’s did in the Big East tourney.

by Jason Middlekauff on Mar 11, 2010 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

Feeling in the pit of stomach?

I have one too, though from Gbinije. Makes me sick.

As for the game, I have no reason to believe that either GT or UNC will upset MD. The biggest thing to keep in mind right now is the competition level: both teams are bad. Both teams have been inconsistent. UNC’s gotten open looks and missed – they’ve even bricked some layups. MD probably wouldn’t, if GT completes the comeback. And if UNC pulls it out, we’ve already seen how went first time around.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

GT maybe...

Obviously GT could as they almost did on our home court. No way in hell Carolina can touch us. They are a disaster.

by Sephtical on Mar 11, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Terps are the better team

so we have to believe that Gary will have them mentally ready for the game tomorrow. I think we’ve proven our mental toughness this year, so I have faith that they will win, whichever of these teams they play.

I admit that in the past I have tried not to get my hopes up to avoid disappointment—but this year I just want to be opptimistic and confident! Go Terps! :-)

by GayleG on Mar 11, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

More Favors

So, so good. Pretty quiet game for him so far, too.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 8:24 PM EST reply actions

Another thing to think about

think about how pro-UNC the crowd will be tomorrow if they can pull this out tonight…and if GT were to win it would pretty much be a neutral environment

by nathan.w.ford on Mar 11, 2010 8:25 PM EST reply actions

favors

Really don’t want anymore of him!

by PADGE on Mar 11, 2010 8:26 PM EST reply actions

Wow

At least this game is exciting. Waaaay better than the first half. GT finally seems to care.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 8:33 PM EST reply actions

More Exciting

But I don’t think the overall level of play has improved a whole lot. GT’s big men are dangerous, particularly Favors. But this game has had some abysmal guard play from both teams.

by Jason Middlekauff on Mar 11, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think

watching Larry Drew play makes me a worst basketball player

by nathan.w.ford on Mar 11, 2010 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

GT starting to pull away just a little

Kinda think it goes back to what I said earlier, that UNC was just outhustling GT. Now GT is hustling and caring, and they’re outplaying UNC.

Not by much, though. It’ll probably stay close.

by Ben Broman on Mar 11, 2010 8:44 PM EST reply actions

that Pitt loss was huge

If we can win at least one game now we should be ahead of Pitt. Get to the finals and that loss could open up the last 3 seed now that Pitt will not be getting it

by amoskowi on Mar 11, 2010 9:32 PM EST reply actions

Lance Stephenson

How great was it to just see Lance take a buzzer beater in the eye from West Virginia. I will say one thing I was on the Lance bandwagon but I am glad he didn’t come here. First he commits a turnover with 3.1 seconds left then Butler drains a 3 in Lances face as time expires. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
