Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Wow. That's big news, huh?

Of course, this will have an effect on athletics. I don't know who the new prez will be, but it'll worth it to watch how they get along with current AD, Debbie Yow. Mote just said he'd "gladly extend" Yow's contract, but that doesn't look like it'd be an option now.

This will get very interesting over the summer and fall.

Farvardin

Just curious why you think Nariman Farvardin would be the man for the job. He doesn’t seem like someone who would support athletics. Throughout his tenure, he has been known for cutting budgets and forcing colleges and departments to reorganize themselves to save money. I doubt he would authorize a large paycheck for the next football coach or Gary’s succesor.

I would much prefer a University President with experience presidential experience. I would like to think UMD is in the position to hire a superstar of higer education. I would gladly take Freeman Hrabowski. Colleges and universities have been after him for years.

hes practical

he did alot for the engineering department to make it a powerhouse. he seems to be a guy who looks at the strengths of a program and capitalizes on them.

i just figured he would see that the strengths of athletics is FB and MBB so he would prioritize those programs.

And I'd argue that's shortsighted

That’s what UMd did in the late 1970s and early 1980s. When the teams are winning? Everything’s great. When they;re not? The AD is still digging out of the hole blown in the budget by the excesses of cash spent by the late 1980s FB and MBB teams on teams nobody came to see.

Don’t put all your eggs in just two baskets. UMd has spent wisely on WBB, and was rewarded with vastly increased attendance and a national championship. Wrestling, for goodness sake, is drawing almost 1,000 fans a home meet. And mens’ lacrosse carried this school for the better part of a decade while MBB and FB were flailing.

Haha...

You know, there is a reason why they are called non-revenue sports (I’m sorry, “Olympic sports”).

Selling a “thousand” $10 tickets per game does not come anywhere near recouping the costs associated with fielding 27 teams, staffs, equipment, facilities, maintenance, etc. Non-revenue sports hemhorrage money as a rule. And your attendance numbers rounding is fairly generous. The latest wrestling meet was officially reported at 743.

Visual: This vs. This.

also mote

was an engineer and umd is becoming an engineering/research oriented school so i figure that is the direction they are headed.

Thanks for everything Mote

Lol, that would be comical

I hope you’re the 13 year old kid that’s running around, because that assumption coming from someone a bit older would be utterly ridiculous. Yow has no business controlling an ENTIRE university. Athletics would prosper perhaps, but she has no experience with handling the academic environment and whatnot.

That would be like CD Mote becoming AD and hiring the next FB coach
