Was this past weekend the worst weekend of sports in Maryland History, I believe so. If you take a snap shot of this past weekend pertaining to Maryland sports the only conclusion that can be made is that no good news can be reported. First we will start of with the obvious Baltimore Ravens lose a heart breaker to their rival the Pittsburgh Steelers and in typical Raven fashion. If you add the significance of the game it hurts that much more considering the Ravens now need some assistance from other teams to beat the Steelers since they were unable to do it themselves. The Ravens are pretty much competing for a Wild Card birth. We lost at home which ended our 8 game home winning streak.
The Maryland Mens Soccer team is on the verge of making a Title run and is one win away from returning to the College Cup, but they lose a heartbreaking double overtime game to Michigan, a team that MD looked significantly better on paper. This hurts for multiple reasons, the ACC is the toughest conference to play in for college soccer, the team had a very favorable draw and the best player on the team is likely not coming back next year, the GK Zac MacBeth. Oh yeah we lost at home, which is few and far between.
The Maryland Mens BBall team losses a sloppy and disheartening game to Temple. Maryland came out and did everything and couldnt do in the first half and fell behind to a team that thrives on a slowed down half court type game. Then you add in the mix of our upperclassmen not showing up and acting like they enjoy the game they get free education and all other perks to play for this university. The freshman out shine the upperclassmen and have now caused a contraversy amoung the team on who to play. This leaves MD BBall 0-3 in the three winnable OOC games that would be "marquee" wins on our resume that will come back to haunt us come tournament time. This only leaves an away game vs. a very good Villanova team the last chance for MD to get a quality OOC win.
Oh yeah lets add the recruiting misfires the past couple of months to the other problems with our team and this could mark some major question marks about the future of this team. Baru picks a mid major for whatever reason or reasons and leaves MD behind and now Hubert is being courted by UNC which lessens the chances he comes to MD since he's had the offer on the table for some time. The last bit about recruiting is the lack of talented options left for 2011 big men and we have no idea how Gary will fill those spots.
The last but not least, MD Fball get absolutely pooch screwed by the Bowl Selection process and receives the Military Bowl in RFK Stadium vs. a .500 C-USA team. ECU gave up 76 points to a team that we defeated earlier in the year and this is how we get rewarded for the second best turnaround from last year in the nation. So not only does our team, school, prestige all get questioned it leaves our Seniors who busted it this year to put together a great season the chance to travel 20 miles down the road to play in a horrible stadium vs. a terrible team and essentially get no reward for their accomplishments this year. Everyone can blame the attendance as the reason why MD didnt get a better bowl, but its simply that MD got hated on by everyone this year. Every week it seemed like well when is MD going to implode and turn back to last years results and it never happened.
Now that's off my chest, GO TERPS and GO RAVENS. Let's show everyone what MD sports is really about.
