Mocking the Draft scouts Torrey Smith

Mocking Dan over at SB Nation's NFL Draft blog scouted Torrey Smith. He ultimately said this about Torrey:

Final word: Smith has been one of the top risers in 2010. Everyone has always known he's a great return man. But now he's developing into a good wide receiver. He'll finish his career as Maryland's career leader in all-purpose yards.

As much as Smith has developed, he has plenty of work to do to be more than the next Darrius Heyward-Bey. Namely, Smith will have to start catching the ball more away from his frame. It seems like Smith makes a lot of catches with his arms and not his fingertips. While he's done a better job on his routes in 2010, he doesn't run an especially complex route tree.

Smith may never be a true No. 1 receiver on an NFL team. What he will be as a good No. 2 and a standout special teams performer.

I'd recommend taking a look if you have some time.

Nice write up

Thanks for finding this article. I think this really highlights Torrey Smith the football player and gives us fans an unbiased opinion of how good Torrey Smith really is compared to our opinions. I completely agree with this write up, I think he is right on with the strengths and weaknesses of Torrey.

I truly think Torrey would be better suited to stay one more year. I know this will benefit the teams outcome significantly and DOB’s stats next year, but I think Torrey needs another year of improving route running, run blocking and understanding the offense better. All in all become a more complete wide receiver.

Torrey’s value right now for the NFL would be a great returner. If Torrey needs the money for personal reasons then we dont have a chance getting him back next year, but if he really wants to improve his overall stock he needs another year of bettering himself as a WR. It was fun and exciting watching you this year Torrey and it would be even better if we get one more year.

GO TERPS!

An objective look

This year has a lot of good receivers in the draft. The order would probably be like this.
1. AJ Green GA
2. Floyd ND
3. Jones Ark.
4.Baldwin Pitt
5. Toliver LSU
6. Toon Wisc.

and then Torrey probably get muttled in with the next 5. That being said, 4 WR’s were drafted in the first 2 rounds. meaning he would be a 4th rounder this year. I know he has financial problem with his home life but patience may be his best option for the money. Next year’s WR class is pretty weak in comparison too.

Rankings

Where is Alabama’s WR Julio Jones, he should be number 1 or 2 on this list? I totally agree with you as well. Torrey does not look that appetizing versus this list of WR. Next year after Alshon Jeffrey from SC and Blackmon from Okla. St. he would be in my eyes the third best WR. Patience is a virtue we will see if the color green makes Torrey blind by his potential of upping his stock by waiting a year.
