A message to all Maryland fans from a Texas Tech student/Leach loyalist
First off, let me say that if Maryland does infact hire Mike Leach as their next head coach, they will immediately gain me as a fan and I have decided I will legitimize this by purchasing a Maryland Terrapins hat and watching every UMD game on espn3. Let's just say that it's hard to be proud of your school when they conspire to fire the winningest coach in school history in likely the most unethical manner possible, so I now vicariously live through your football program. I can't tell you how painful it now is watching Tommy T make a fool of not only himself, but every player on our team.
Anyway, I made this post on doubletnation.com a long time ago to get an in-depth look at just how much production Leach gets out of his players compared to the other 11 teams in the big 12. It's a lot to read, but I promise it is worth it, as I was amazed when I finished making it at what the statistics presented. This is my way of emphasizing how excited I am to see Mike Leach back in football. It's very refreshing for me to see that the University of Maryland is smart enough, open-minded enough, and decisive enough to see through all the bullshit that Leach had to put up with at Tech and realize that this is a good man who cares about his players, academics, and is a damn good coach with a damn good scheme to boot. Enjoy and go Terps!!!! Below is the original post.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a lot of time on my hands, so I decided to try and figure out a way to truly examine the performances of every Big 12 team since 2002 in such a way that it took each program's advantages or disadvantages from a recruiting standpoint into consideration and could give a real number to gauge their productivity relative to the type of recruit they get. In this calculation, teams are rewarded for acquiring wins while having lesser recruits, while teams are punished for failing to acquire wins while having greater recruits. As we all know, Tech has been able to massively overachieve given the current pecking order in recruiting that exists in the Big 12, while schools such as, o I dunno, Texas A&M maybe, have managed to massively underachieve despite having what many "experts" (from rivals.com) declare great recruits/recruiting classes.
The information that I came up with resulted in each team earning what I call a "Power Score" in that it is a great indication of how much "boom for your buck," if you will, each team gets per recruit based on how many wins they earn with said recruits. This score consists of the amount of wins earned by each team beginning with the 2002 season and ending with the 2008 season (both total wins and conference wins) divided by the average star rating of a recruit their team signed, according to rivals.com, beginning with the class of 2002 and ending with the class of 2008. By doing this, every possible signee who could have contributed in any way to any teams' total win number over this time period is included in the calculation. Below is a table displaying the results:
Team Wins from '02-'08 (Conference Wins) Avg. Stars per player ('02-'08) Power Score (Conf. Power Score)
Baylor 25 (10) 2.27 11.01 (4.41)
Colorado 42 (27) 2.86 14.69 (9.44)
Iowa State 32 (15) 2.49 12.85 (6.02)
Kansas 45 (22) 2.66 16.92 (8.27)
Kansas State 48 (26) 2.85 16.84 (9.12)
Missouri 55 (29) 2.86 19.23 (10.14)
Nebraska 53 (28) 3.13 16.93 (8.95)
Oklahoma 78 (53) 3.64 21.43 (14.56)
Oklahoma State 51 (27) 2.88 17.71 (9.38)
Texas A&M 42 (24) 3.09 13.60 (7.77)
Texas 77 (47) 3.66 21.04 (12.84)
Texas Tech 62 (35) 2.71 22.88 (12.92)
As I mentioned before, as Tech fans we all know our team regularly overachieves, but I found this result to be pretty surprising! Your Texas Tech Red Raiders have the #1 power score in the overall wins category, and the #2 power score in the conference wins category! Below is the complete rankings list:
OVERALL:
#1 Texas Tech - 22.88
#2 Oklahoma - 21.43
#3 Texas - 21.04
#4 Missouri - 19.23
#5 Oklahoma State - 17.71
#6 Nebraska - 16.93
#7 Kansas - 16.92
#8 Kansas State - 16.84
#9 Colorado - 14.69
#10 Texas A&M - 13.60
#11 Iowa State - 12.85
#12 Baylor - 11.01
CONFERENCE:
#1 Oklahoma - 14.56***
#2 Texas Tech - 12.92
#3 Texas - 12.84
#4 Missouri - 10.14
#5 Colorado - 9.44
#6 Oklahoma State - 9.38
#7 Kansas State - 9.12
#8 Nebraska - 8.95
#9 Kansas - 8.27
#10 Texas A&M - 7.77
#11 Iowa State - 6.02
#12 Baylor - 4.41
***OU's conference power level is particularly high because Big 12 championships accounted for extra wins against conference foes, thus further rewarding their performance.
Unsurprisingly, Baylor and Iowa State finished 12th and 11th respectively in both lists, because they quite simply could not accumulate wins. Also unsurprisingly, the Aggies, one of only 4 teams in the conference to have an average star rating above 3, finished 10th in overall wins and conference wins despite having what would seem like a considerable advantage as far as recruiting is concerned compared to most teams. Texas Tech, on the other hand, had only the 9th highest average star rating, but was able to finish very high on both lists. What else does these calculations tell us though? These observations are fairly obvious and do not require calculations to agree upon, only common sense. What may surprise you, however, lies ahead. Consider this:
For Texas Tech, you can multiply their power score (22.88) and their average star rating (2.71) and you will come up with an answer of 62.0048, or 62, the number of wins Tech had from 2002 to 2008. What really makes this table interesting is that you can apply this formula to any team and see how they would perform with another team's talent. For comparison's sake, let's see how our team would have fared from this time period if they had the talent level of UT:
22.88 (Tech's power level) X 3.66 (UT's avg. star rating) = 83.7408
WOW! What a whopping number! If we had the same talent level as UT over the same time period based on the information presented in the table, we would have achieved 84 wins (if we round up) compared to UT's 77 wins that were actually accumulated over that time! Even with A&M's talent level we theoretically achieve about 71 wins compared to their 42 over the same time period! Of course, these calculations must be taken with a massive grain of salt, as they do not factor in uncontrollable variables of football such as turnovers, injuries, etc. But from simply a comparison of performance standpoint based on past trends acquired strictly from the information presented in the table, they are a great indicator of how much production a team gets, or would have got, out of their, or another team's players!
You can also multiply the power level of a team by the avg. star rating of a team to get the total wins the team would acquire, and then divide by 7 (2002 season through 2008 season) to discover how many wins the team would average over that span. Let's compare Tech with Baylor here:
22.88 X 2.27= 51.9376
51.9376 / 7 = 7.41965....
Even with we had BAYLOR'S talent level from 2002-2008, we would have theoretically still averaged 7 wins a season!!!!!
If this does not indicate what a wonderful, outstanding, remarkable, incredible job our staff does working with and developing our players, than I truly do not know what does. This also shows that our guys are FULL of heart and are willing to be taught from this great staff and work hard to reach what many people don't think is possible from them. I hope anyone who reads all this can appreciate it as much as I did, because I now have even MORE respect for my football team!

Welcome to the club....
Glad to have you, unofficially that is!
TechTom, if you're in the DFW area . . .
let’s hook up after you get that hat and Maryland gets Leach. You’ll recognize me easy, I’ll be the guy in the middle of “Arrrrlington” with the new red and black pirate hat! Oy!
I agree, Leach had an amazing run with Tech – loved watching them ever since I migrated south to the DFW area. I think he’ll be a good fit at Maryland and will bring some badly needed energy to College Park. God Bless Ralph, he made Terrapin football relevant again, but there’s been a certain lack of energy the last few years. Haven’t heard much about his vaunted playbook of late . . . which is OK, from what I hear, Coach Leach don’t need no stinkin’ playbooks! ;-)
Go Terps!
I see a lot of T Tech fans stopping by to support Leach.
That’s gotta mean something good. Most fans want to chase their HC out of town, looking for the next big hire(i.e. Fridge). But I am happy to see that Leach made such an impact on Tech fans. I’m still not over the way Anderson shafted big Ralph, but I am definitely warming to the idea of Maryland making some noise in the ACC, and hopefully on the national scene as well.
Just to add on to what techtom4 is saying,
we envy you guys. Leach is an outstanding coach. We need to live vicariously through you.
Consider me one more Terp Fan.

he will slaughter us at Clemson ,
and as bad as he beats just about the whole ACC , you will see changes in Defensive coordinators at a lot of ACC schools . I am a die hard Clemson fan , but a huge fan of Coach Leach . I can tell all of you this much , the rest of the ACC better learn to score MANY points because it will get real damn ugly – real damn fast if they don’t !!!
70-10 against Nebraska

Get ready for an exciting brand of football. And don’t leave early. Ask the Minnesota fans who left after they had a 31 point halftime lead in the Insight Bowl a few years back. Just make him hire a real defensive coordinator.
And he comes in handy in other ways too:

im real excited to have Leach as a coach assuming all reports are true
this post jut makes me feel even more confident. If he can win in the big 12 with Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska then he can easily win in the ACC. Cannot wait for football 2011 now. Notre Dame game at Fedex Field is going to be a blast
And four...
I know very little about the Maryland football program. All I know is it is about to be quite exiting and consider me a new fan from Amarillo TX! I’ll study up over the winter and spring and come next fall, you guys are in for a treat. Go Terps! Congrats on the presumed hire! Leach is all around entertaining, and a helluva football coach!
Repost
Other comments on Leach at Texas Tech:
1) The QB needs to be accurate more than anything
2) expect the QB to get hit A LOT the first season
3) Prepare for the QB to NEVER run when all of the receivers are covered – QB sneak for 1-yard – yes, but nothing else
4) Get ready to "go-for-it" on 4th down – a lot, all over the field. I learned to like it: 4th & 7 from YOUR 25 yard line. I really did like it even when we didn’t make it!
5) Leach is not a bad recruiter. Just not as good as Mack Brown & Bob Stoops. You will get your share, and Leach will get a lot out of the offensive kids that come to Maryland.
6) The offense is not difficult to implement, but they will need practice and game repetitions to really get into high gear.
7) any coach that can hang 70 on Nebraska is a coach I want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-P4Fs6PFZQ&feature=related
8) And then follow it up the next year with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUkmKn-9mlU&feature=related
9) or come back from 38-7 in a bowl game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyT3UXLdO4E&feature=related
10) or do this to a #4 Cal team: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Snu4R6ft3gg&feature=related
11) or hang 70 on TCU when it was 28-21 in the 3rd quarter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddpLWCEoD0U&feature=fvw
If Leach ever gets a defensive watch out. If the ACC runs a lot of 4-3 D watch out. If Leach has the same agent that he did when he was at Tech then Maryland fans better watch out!
This is simply amazing
I hope he stays here for a while.

to answer 1)
Our QB, who was a redshirt frosh this year, is one of the most accurate QBs in the country: 21 tds, 6 ints and 3 of those came in one half against clemson when were trailing by a lot, and another in a late game situation against FSU when he was pressured and trying to make a play on 3rd or 4th down i think.
I was always a Leach fan and cant wait for next football season.
That is a sentence I never thought i would say in the middle of acc basketball season when our next conference game is duke
I will be purchasing a Terp hat as well.
I’m now a fan.
Tommy Tuberville can bite my shiny metal ass!!!
Awesome
Welcome to the family guys. Very informative post.
If it happens which going by the news it is imminent,
then, Fear the passing Turtles—I can’t remember all the Tech QBs during his time there, but they all seemed to throw for 300+ yards with several TDs each game. I really thought that Vandy should have made a real push, but it will be your gain if you get him. Maryland and the surrounding states—NC, Virginia, ect have a lot of good hs talent; I know Leach did not always get the highest rated guys partly because UT and Oklahoma dominated the Big 12 in terms of getting the highly rated recruits, but he recruited well getting guys to fit his system.
It will be interesting to see if he is your coach if he starts to get more of those highly sought after guys. I know he will always find the right guys to make things work regardless. I hope y’all get him—I loved watching his teams when I got the chance to.

In fairness to Leach's recruiting...
Lubbock TX is far from the easiest place to recruit 4- and 5-star athletes from the metro areas. Ask Bobby Knight about that. You can put together a solid program recruiting West Texas, and he did. But you have to be able to draw from Dallas and Houston consistently to compete with UT and Oklahoma, and Lubbock is a tough environment to do that successfully.
It took me a couple of days to warm up to this, but I’m totally on board now. It won’t be boring…

as a fan of Maryland should my Captain become your next head coach. Our great loss is your great gain and should you have a quarterback who can pass to receivers who can catch, say goodbye to boring football. I will be watching any Maryland game that I can find on TV should Maryland football fans and Tech fans of Mike Leach get a common Christmas present soon.
(there has been talk of logos representing the Captain and his fondness for pirates and if memory is correct, Grand Cayman used to use a turtle in pirate garb in it’s tourist promotions, it might become appropriate for Maryland too.)
Here is the pirate/turtle logo from Grand Cayman, it might become useful at Md.

Great post TechTom
Didn’t see the original post, You must have posted the original before my DTN days.
Now it looks like I might becoming a Maryland fan; a Leach-Maryland fan to be specific.
I like the glass all the way full.
Another new fan
I hope I’m not jumping the gun but I just ordered a Maryland sweatshirt :-)
If you guys can land Leach, you will be in for a great run. He took what was a 2nd or sometimes a 3rd tier program and put us consistently in the top 25. We were bowl eligible for the entire existence of the Big 12. No other team can say that, not Oklahoma or Texas.
You need to get a good defensive coordinator since that is his weak point. But offensively, you have no problem scoring. There were very few games that I gave up on. No matter how far we were down, I always had hope that we could comeback.
Even the 2006 Insight Bowl when we were down 31, I felt it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. I watched that game with my boss at a bar and in the 3rd quarter my boss turned to me and said incredulously, “you really still think you can win, don’t you?” I said yes.
I am really excited for you if he ends up there. My neighbor went to Maryland and I’ve already told him I will be over on game day. :-)
2002 Tangerine Bowl Texas Tech vs Clemson 55-15
This was my first real experience with watching a Leach offense . Texas Tech destroyed Clemson 55-15 .
Guys , it was sad and funny at the same time . They were leading 34 – 2 at the freaking half !!!!!!!!
Their QB was a senior that year , Kingsbury I believe . Folks – he threw for over 5000 yds in 2002 . Thats productive no matter how you slice it . Your QB can pass his ass off too , so I think he and Leach will be a great fit .
Congrats if you get him . Every other ACC team will dread playing in College Park from now on……………
Hire Leach!
Auburn fan here…. Endorsing Leach as heartily as possible! Leave Malzahn alone! Please!
It’s funny though, I remember visiting Texas Tech blogs to endorse Tommy Tuberville. We still love him. Sorry he’s not working out as well as you TT fans would like.
I wonder where all you Maryland fans will be endorsing your recently dismissed coach?

The nearest retirement community?
Fridge is pretty old and this was his dream job at his alma matter and the only job he ever coveted. I seriously doubt he’ll coach at this level again.
I love Fridge and will always respect everything he did for MD but it’s business not friendsness. Go Leach and go Terps!
